FBTB Live Streaming LEGO Dimensions – SAT @ 8:30 PM CST

Watch live video from fb2b on www.twitch.tv

The new year of LEGO Dimensions has hit shelves (well, some of them… I had to ask the clerk at Best Buy to find them for me), and that means that there’s a whole lot of game playing to be had. We’re going to try something new along with this, mostly at my expense, and start live streaming our playthrough of the game. Part of this will also be covering the individual Fun Packs, Character Packs, and Level Packs as we get to them.

To that end, our first live stream of me showing exactly how bad I am at the LEGO games, making a (bigger) fool of myself, and generally enjoying the banter of the characters while I occasionally talk into a headset mic will be on Saturday, October 1st at 8:30 PM CST. Feel free to check out the stream, hop into the chat on Twtich, or just join along.

I’ve embedded the link above. After the stream, we’re going to work on archiving the streams and potentially using bits of it in other content. So if you can’t make the initial stream, it should be available after the fact as well.

  • Best Buy Offers Discount On Dimensions Supergirl PS4 Starter Pack

Best Buy Offers Discount On Dimensions Supergirl PS4 Starter Pack

Update: Amazon has matched Best Buy’s price. Prime discount does not apply, unfortunately, since it is discounted by more than 20%. Thems the breaks I guess.

Best Buy is offering a decent pre-order price for the LEGO Dimensions Supergirl Playstation 4 Starter Pack. It normally retails for $89.99 but Best Buy is offering it for just $49.99. But wait there’s more! If you’re a Gamers Club Unlocked member, you’ll save an additional 20% off bringing the price down to just $39.99. Amazon hasn’t price matched Best Buy’s price yet, but I think that’s just a matter of time. You’ll get free shipping regardless if you’re a GCU member or not, and if you’ve waited this long to get into Dimensions and have a PS4 system this isn’t such a bad entry point. For those of us that have already bought into the system, though, how does a $50 dollar Supergirl figure float your boat?

  • The LEGO Batman Movie, Knight Rider Expansion Packs Revealed

The LEGO Batman Movie, Knight Rider Expansion Packs Revealed

Knight freakin’ Rider. Soon you too will be able to fulfill your dreams of holding a minifig of the Hoff in your hands while you try making that cool wooo-wooo sound that KITT’s cyclopean eye made. WBIE sent over these images showing some of the new expansion packs coming out on February 10, 2017. Joining the LEGO David Hasselhoff minifigure and mini KITT from the The Knight Rider Fun Pack are two different packs for The LEGO Batman Movie: a Fun Pack with a silver armored Batman minifig and a Bionic Steed, and a Story Pack with Batgirl, Robin, and a Batwing. Check out Robin’s glasses! For those of you keeping score, you’ll need both packs to complete the LEGO Batman Movie gameplay experience, that is unless there are more unannounced Packs for that property.

You can preorder The LEGO Batman Movie Story Pack right now off of Amazon. The two Fun Packs aren’t available yet, but we’ll be posting once they become pre-order-able.

  • LEGO Dimensions Supergirl Details, Gives Finger to non-PS4 Players

LEGO Dimensions Supergirl Details, Gives Finger to non-PS4 Players

To be fair, they’re also giving the finger to current PS4 owners of the game.

According to Kotaku, WB/LEGO has finally revealed how Supergirl is going to make it into the game: as a PS4 exclusive in the PS4 starter kit. So, to the millions that already own the title, if you want her you’re going to need to repurchase the game (which, I’m just going to go out on a limb here, will go up in price because of the extra figure). Oh, and have a PS4.

For those of us that own the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, or WiiU version of the game (you may notice two of those consoles as being currently in production still)… I guess we’re just out of luck. No, that’s not true… we can use the in-game rental system, which is totally the point of a game that features the physical product heavily.

On the plus side, it has inspired me to not order any of the new packs, so there is that.

  • [SDCC] LEGO Dimensions Wave 7 Release Date and Details

[SDCC] LEGO Dimensions Wave 7 Release Date and Details

SDCC News has been flowing, and Dimensions has come along with it. The release date for Wave 7 has been announced, November 18th, along with the some of the missing stuff from the earlier (and awesome) teaser. We already covered the TRU exclusive Adventure Time pack, but now we’re getting official images for Gremlins, E.T., Sonic the Hedgehog, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

    StoryPack_NA_Newt_71253

The most curious of them is the fact that the not-Potter pack is coming out in a full big pack, much like the new Ghostbusters pack. Here’s hoping that it also brings with it just as many levels as that pack has promised. And also hoping that a $60-75 pack doesn’t become the norm for each wave… my wallet can’t handle that.

The full press release (any typos are theirs, not ours), more images, and screenshots from the game are past the fold.

  • TRU Dimensions Exclusive: Adventure Time’s Marceline Fun Pack

TRU Dimensions Exclusive: Adventure Time’s Marceline Fun Pack

My knowledge of Adventure Time can be summed up as “it’s called Adventure Time and is a cartoon.” So I really don’t have any context of who Marceline is, or if it’s a big deal that TRU has an exclusive like this. Hopefully someone in the comments can elaborate a bit for us that don’t know much about all these new fangled cartoons.

Available in November, TRU has it up for pre-order now, shockingly for what looks to be MSRP. Honestly, I’ll probably get it just for the red axe blades.

  • LEGO Dimensions Sonic Minifigure Revealed

    LEGO Dimensions Sonic Minifigure Revealed

This is kind of a bad angle but it’s best it’s gonna get. The above picture was shared by Mark Warburton of TT Games and posted on NintendoLife. Sonic was revealed as a Dimensions license in the E3 reveal video at the very end, snatching The One Ring away from Gollum. Despite using The One Ring element in the video, here he has the life preserver element as his accessory. This may still be a prototype and the final version may differ. He is not part of the wave 1 assortment so this is a very early look at one of the future waves in the second year of Dimensions.

You can pre-order all of first wave of the second year of LEGO Dimensions from Amazon right now.

  • Mission Impossible Level Pack, Battle Arena Objectives Mode Previews

Mission Impossible Level Pack, Battle Arena Objectives Mode Previews

On the last day of E3, the LEGO Dimensions demo stations had been outfitted with the Mission Impossible Level Pack demo, replacing the Ghostbusters Story Pack demo. The demo allowed you to play the first two levels of the pack, giving you an idea of Ethan Hunt’s appearance changing ability and how you have to use it to progress through the level. The levels are modeled after the cocktail party mission from the first Mission Impossible movie.

I also had enough time to go back and get some video of the Objectives mode in Battle Arenas. In Objectives mode, you have a series of objectives to complete which you can choose to do or you can try and hinder your opponents progress. Power-ups are still available to use to either disrupt your opponents in some way or give yourself a slight edge. We played the LEGO Harry Potter map and while it feels as large and expansive as the Adventure Time map, my only complaint would be that it was really difficult to tell where your home base is. This looks almost as fun Capture The Flag.

With Objectives and Capture the Flag out of the way, that’s two out of the four Battle Arena modes. I’m looking forward to seeing the other two and can’t wait for Comic Con where they will hopefully reveal them there. The first wave of LEGO Dimensions Year 2 ships in September. You can pre-order your packs right now from Amazon.

  • Ghostbusters Story Pack First Level Playthrough

Ghostbusters Story Pack First Level Playthrough

The Ghostbusters Story Pack is the first of it’s kind for LEGO Dimensions. The LEGO Batman Movie and Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them will also be getting Story Packs. They are basically augmented level packs and will feature at least 6 levels that are bigger and more involved. The demo kiosks at E3 lets you play through the first level and I was able to shoot some video while Katie Tuck took the controls and explained what was going on with some of the new game mechanics. The video shows the playthrough the entire first level to give you an idea of what’s to come.

Abby Yates is the only minifigure you get in the Story Pack along with a mini version of Ecto-1 and a new portal model of Zhu’s Chinese Restaurant. This is designed to replace the portal that you get with the starter set and works with the existing toy pad. When you scan Abby into the Story, you also get access to Jillian Holtzmann and Erin Gilbert as playable characters. The whereabouts of the fourth Ghostbuster Patty Tolan was purposefully kept secret for spoiler reasons.

The Ghostbusters Story Pack will be released alongside the rest of the initial wave for Year 2 Dimensions sets in September of this year. You can pre-order all of the sets directly from Amazon.

  • Battle Arenas Is The Best Thing To Happen To A LEGO Video Game Ever

Battle Arenas Is The Best Thing To Happen To A LEGO Video Game Ever

LEGO artist Brandon Griffith and I spent the day at E3 trying out some Battle Arenas at the LEGO Dimensions booth. We spent some time playing the Capture The Flag and I honestly think it’s the best thing to happen to a LEGO video game ever. Before I get into why it’s the best thing ever, here are some details about the Capture The Flag mode:

    • It’s a four-player game with any number of real players and CPU-controlled players.
    • You start the level by free-falling into your base. Once you land you make your way to your opponents’ bases and try and capture their flag.
    • You gain a point for every second you are holding the flag, three points per second if you hold two flags, and five points for three flags.
    • You can return your opponents’ flags to your base for 50 points or just hang onto them for as long as possible to let the points rack up.
    • If you are using a flying character, you cannot fly while holding a flag.
    • You can bring vehicles into the field, but cannot get in one while holding the flag.
    • You run slower while holding a flag.
    • If you die while holding a flag, the flags will drop allowing your opponent to come pick them up. They will automatically return to their respective bases after some time. If you recover your flag in this way, it will go back to your base.
    • The matches are timed at five minutes.

They’ve covered pretty much every concern I had about the mode since the video surfaced the other day.

Sounds pretty basic but that’s precisely why I think it’s going to be great. LEGO games aren’t known to be complicated and they’re so easy to play that anyone can just pick up a controller and go. The ease in which one can start playing is its greatest strength. You ever go to your friend’s house back in the day to play a game that he owns and you just get your butt kicked because he owned the game and you didn’t and he put in hours and hours of game time compared to the mere two minutes you just put in since you got to his house? That situation probably happens less and less these days since most games nowadays are all online-enabled for competitive or co-op play and if you and your friend wanted play something, you’d both have to have copies of the game anyway. TT Games’ choice in only having local co-op play may seem a bit odd and some may call it a bad and/or questionable choice, but it hearkens back to the days of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark where you get together with some friends and talk smack while trying to outdo each other in four-player split-screen mode. Whether TT Games intended it or not, these Battle Arenas will be great party games because anyone can just pick up a controller and give it a go. All it takes is one five-minute match to get acclimated to the environment, the controls, and after that, let the games begin.

There are a total of four different Battle Arena game types, and each pack in Year 2 will have it’s own map that any of the arena games can be played on. We saw two maps today: Adventure Time and LEGO Harry Potter. The two maps weren’t simply reskins of one another as the castle which holds your flag was very different between the two maps. Only Capture The Flag and Objectives were playable at E3. I didn’t get a chance to play the Objectives one but basically you’re placed on the same four-player map and have to complete a series of objectives such as collect the studs or break three crystals to get points. If I have time, I’ll try and go back play a round or two.

I wouldn’t be surprised if battle arenas made its way out of Dimensions and in to future standalone LEGO games. And I’ll tell you what. It’s invigorated my interest in playing LEGO games like nothing has before.
