A Year of Polybags 197/260: 30528 Mini Master-Building MetalBeard Review

Maybe if I watched the movie, I’d appreciate this set more.

    Sponsorship

This week’s set of reviews is sponsored by Brandon Griffith, one of the best LEGO artists I know. He works behind the scenes on the LEGO Masters show. He’s done statues for Comic Con, live installations, and has appeared in numerous art shows. You can follow him on Instagram at @brandongriffithart. He’s sponsored today’s set, as well as the ones you’ll see for the rest of this week. He donated a lot. Thanks, Brandon!

Want to sponsor a review? Send a pic to admin@fbtb.net or hit me up on discord of the polybag set you have that you want me to review. If selected, in exchange for the set you’ll get a mention right here in the review post and a link to your website or social media account for the entire week. Nearly free advertising, so what’s stopping you? And now onto the review.

Today’s set, 30528 Mini Master-Building MetalBeard, comes from The LEGO Movie 2, and is a bit too esoteric for me mainly because I haven’t watched the source material. I do know that MetalBeard was more or less just a head and anything it wanted as body. He was never actually portrayed in minifig form in either movie. This polybag is probably the closest thing we will ever get. But even better!

Instead of two legs, it’s got four. And for additional mobility, there’s a handy wheel on the bottom. He’s like he is his own Heelys.

    He’s got two arms.

And a tail! The tail can hold a battle standard at the end of it.

His head is forward mounted and sports his pirate’s hat.

And the awesomeness doesn’t stop there. This is actually a 3-in-1 model where you can also build, from the looks of it, a tricycle with arms and a small boat. The only bad thing is that the instructions for those two alt models aren’t included on the instruction sheet. You’ll have to go to LEGO.com to get the PDF. But you can probably just mash the pieces together yourself without the instructions and build the alt models.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! MetalBeard was one of the more memorable characters from the two LEGO movies. Who doesn’t love a pirate? or Nick Offerman? Plus, his myriad forms makes him stand out as the most customizable characters ever. Just stick his head, hat + metalbeard element onto anything brown and you got a new form. There have been a few polybags that featured alternate models, but unlike the other ones we’ve reviewed before, 30528 Mini Master-Building MetalBeard doesn’t suck.

  • A Year of Polybags 183/260: 5002045 Pyjamas Emmet Review

A Year of Polybags 183/260: 5002045 Pyjamas Emmet Review

One of the best things to come out of The LEGO Movie are the various different head prints for Emmet. They are comicly expressive on a level not seen in LEGO before nor after. Minifigure heads always held the line of simplicity and efficiency. But these Emmet heads fully lean in on being cartoony. Today’s set, 5002045 Pyjamas Emmet, is a perfect example of this.

Seen at the beginning of the first movie, what we have here is Emmet in his pyjamas, just waking up and starting his day. The head is double-sided and the side you see on the bag has Emmet winking. Well, it may not be a wink but him just trying to open his eyes from a long night’s sleep.

The other side of the head is a full on, wide-mouthed yawn. Just look at the size of that pie hole! It could also serve double duty as a face that is strenuously yelling. In any case, it is just great. The mouth takes up more than half the surface area of the face!

The rest of the fig isn’t all the unique but rather difficult to come by at this point. The pyjama torso and legs were also seen in a Collectible Minifigure Series 6 minifigure, Sleepyhead. And those are some pretty sweet pieces featuring printing on the arms and the sides of the legs. Just awesome.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! A simple promotional figure that has one exclusive part. That may or may not be irksome, depending on how you feel about rare minifig parts. Some fans may cry foul due to only being through a newspaper promotion in one specific country. I dig it though.

  • A Year of Polybags 165/260: 30280 The Piece of Resistance Review

A Year of Polybags 165/260: 30280 The Piece of Resistance Review

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched The LEGO Movie, so today’s set, 30280 The Piece of Resistance, is a bit lost on me.

I remember enough, though, that the Piece of Resistance is the cap to the Kragle. I also remember that it it got stuck on Emmet’s back. Emmet found it when tumbling through a hole and landing right in front of it. If there ever needed to be example of dumb luck, this would be it.

This polybag recreates that crucial scene. I don’t think there’s any other set in the entire theme that let’s the builder recreate that scene, just this one. And it’s a polybag. Other sets that have Emmet with the Piece are just that, him and the Piece in whatever happened after he got it. It’s kind of mind boggling. It’s like if the “No, I am your father” scene was a polybag with handless Luke on a catwalk.

Okay, maybe it’s not AS a dramatic of a scene, but everything that happens in the movie is basically because this guy had the dumbest luck and accidentally found the Piece before Wyldstyle could. And that pivotal scene is right here, in a polybag.

The base has a bit of action. Turn the Technic element and the Piece of Resistance pops a slope off. Woo *yawn* hoo.

Bricklink lists this minifigure as unique, only coming in one set. but is listed “without Piece of Resistance”. But that’s the only differentiator and doesn’t really make this unique, no matter what Bricklink thinks.

And I have no idea why Emmet’s carrying a coffee cup. I don’t think he had it when he fell down the hole.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set sucks! Despite capturing a key scene from The LEGO Movie, there’s no reason to own this set. Maybe a polybag was the right size, because I can’t think of how it could be a set any other way, maybe a $10 boxed set. But even then there’s really not much here to get excited about.

  • A Year of Polybags 134/260: 30460 Rex’s Plantimal Ambush Review

A Year of Polybags 134/260: 30460 Rex’s Plantimal Ambush Review

Gonna start this review by stating I never saw The LEGO Movie 2. Not sure why. I really enjoyed the first movie as did the kids but never got around to the second one. it’s on my bucket list though. So I’m diving into today’s polybag, 30460 Rex’s Plantimal Ambush, blind.

Half minifig, half… plantimal… this is a pretty solid polybag.

First up is the Rex minifig which is unique to this set. But that’s a bit misleading. The individual elements are not, but putting them together as a whole is what makes it distinctive.

If anything, the head is the rarest element only appearing in two sets: this one and 70831 Emmet’s Dream House/Rescue Rocket. It’s double-sided and I just love the goofy, big-mouthed expressions.

He carries a big gun. It’s brick-built and is double-barreled and looks much like the minifig weapon, except all scaled up.

The plantimal was a neat little build. It takes its name to hear being composed of mostly plant elements. There’s a crab in there to whose claws represent hands. The clip at the connecting side of the palm frond kinda looks like its mouth. Intentional design or happy accident? I’ll lean towards the latter.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! I’m not a fan of polybags with just a bunch of small builds. But this one is more than tolerable. You build Rex and his giant gun and a plantimal and that’s it. They can stare at each other while keeping your Rolodex company.

  • A Year of Polybags 112/260: 5002203 Radio DJ Robot Review

A Year of Polybags 112/260: 5002203 Radio DJ Robot Review

For The LEGO Movie, there were a whole mess of one-off minifig polybag promos. I can’t even begin to remember what all the methods one had to go through to get them all and I’m not even sure how to look up all that information. Today’s polybag, 5002203 Radio DJ Robot, is one such minifig promo.

According to the internet, this was a pre-order exclusive for The LEGO Movie Video Game. I don’t own a copy of the game so it must have found its way into my collection by the good graces of a former GameStop employee.

Radio DJ Robot probably had a very short cameo in the film. So short in fact that I couldn’t even begin to guess which part of the movie it came from. First half, back half, yeah I have no idea. Can you sense a theme here?

Despite my apathy towards this polybag and its origins, it’s still a nice little minifig. Just check out that torso print! The torso and leg elements feature unique prints which makes this minifig unique. And unlike the recent Star Wars minifigs we’ve reviewed, this one doesn’t make me want to throw it in the trash. The name is a bit questionable. Nothing about this invokes any sense that it’s a radio dj. Radio DJ’s tend to be older folks that look like they’re trying too hard to be young and relevant. He strikes me more as a disgruntled gen z-er.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! Sure, it’s a unique minifigure of an obscure character that had just scant seconds of screen time. Where have we experienced this before?

  • A Year of Polybags 105/260: 30282 Super Secret Police Enforcer Review

A Year of Polybags 105/260: 30282 Super Secret Police Enforcer Review

Ah, The LEGO Movie, what a great movie! Too bad the sets were hit and miss. Today’s polybag, 30282 Super Secret Police Enforcer, is, sadly, a miss.

The polybag is a pretty good army builder: it comes with a generic cop great for army building and a small vehicle. This Police Enforcer vehicle is in the standard black and white police colors.

There are some trans-red and trans-blue elements for police lights. I do wish that one of the cones in the front was trans-blue to balance the red vs blue.

While there are two control sticks, the Robo SWAT cop can only use one while he holds his gun. There’s no obvious place to store the weapon so either he has to hold it the entire time or stick it in one of the exposed hollow studs in the back.

I doubt this is the intended storage method for the weapon.

The vehicle doesn’t seem to be inspired by anything in the movie. At least I don’t think it is, I’m not about to go back and rewatch it. But even if there was an instance of this dinky Enforcer vehicle being on screen, no matter the source, the overall design is just mediocre. A small flying vehicle, made in mostly black and white, some trans elements, all to make it look police-y. But it’s an open cockpit design, doesn’t look like anything based on real life, and mostly unremarkable.

I say mostly because there are two sections that are built on a hinge brick allowing for an angled design. That’s really the only interesting part of it. I remember WyldStyle’s motorcycle having some interesting angles on it too, so seeing the same effort put here is nice to see, but really we’re just talking about polishing a turd.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

If me calling this set a turd wasn’t a big enough clue, let me spell it out for you: this set sucks! Sure it’s a great army builder, it looks like it can join any Super Secret Police layout or army or whatever, but the design is just so bland it’s really not moving the needle for me.
