    A Year of Polybags 123/260: 30601 Scooby-Doo Review

Honestly, I forgot that Scooby-Doo was a license until I pulled today’s polybag, 30601 Scooby-Doo, out of bin. I didn’t invest too heavily into the theme. I might have gotten the Mystery Machine set…. or at least I wanted to. LEGO pulled their old “spread all the main characters across multiple sets to force the fans to buy them all to get the whole gang” trick. So I may not have ended up getting any at all but the desire to have the mystery machine with all the gang members is still there.

This polybag came with the movie, LEGO Scooby-Doo – Haunted Hollywood. There’s only two parts in this set, the body and the head. And like the Batgirl polybag, the head is the unique element making this minifig unique. Bricklink describes it as “Medium Nougat Dog Head Great Dane Scooby-Doo with Black Nose, Smile on Both Sides and Tongue Pattern”.

People might be fine with just having Scooby in their collection. Me, personally, he should at least be paired up with Shaggy. But still, LEGO or not, this is a great rendition of Scooby.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! If my thumbs downing that Batgirl polybag is any sort of precedent, I should be thumbs downing this thing too for the same reasons. There’s a barely a difference from other Scooby-Doo heads but I can’t help it. I grew up on Scooby-Doo so I’ll change my stance on this one and give it my seal of approval.

You Can Win This And Every Other Polybag I Review This Year

I’ll be raffling every polybag I review this year in one big lot, all 260 sets (with the possibility of more). Each set will be individually stored in a ziploc baggie complete with the extra pieces, instructions, and the actual polybag bag it came in. The cost of a raffle ticket is just $1 USD and you can enter as many times as you want. Send a PayPal payment to paypal@fbtb.net for $1 USD for every ticket you want to purchase. DO NOT send one payment for multiple entries i.e. do not send one $5 USD payment for five tickets; five $1 USD payments must be made insteavd. Raffle is open to everyone in the world except where raffles are illegal. Be sure to put “POLYBAG RAFFLE” in the notes section of the payment in order to be entered successfully. Winner will be drawn sometime early January 2023 and contacted at the PayPal email address the payment was sent from to arrange for delivery. For a running list of all the sets that you can win, check this Google spreadsheet.

New Dimensions Fun Packs, LEGO Scooby-Doo Haunted Hollywood Movie Released

    LEGO Scooby

LEGO is a company that always likes to keep its secrets, but I’m thinking they might have gone overboard on their original movie, LEGO Scooby-Doo Haunted Hollywood, which came out today. Thrak360 on the forums pointed this out as well, and I saw it when I was at Target picking up Deadpool (which also came out today). My daughter loves the LEGO movies, so I had to pick it up. For those who are curious, he comes packaged in a polybag with the movie.

    All Wave 5 (02)

In similar news of releases, though this is less “didn’t know” and more “forgot about entirely,” the Wave 5 stuff for Dimensions also showed up today, featuring Ghostbuster’s Slimer and Batman’s Bane. I’d ordered Slimer from Amazon back in December, and was shocked when it showed up today (damaged, crushed, and mangled… thanks, Amazon!).

    All Wave 5 (01)

I’m not sure when it happened, but it looks like Dimensions Fun Packs have also had their MSRP dropped to $11.99, and Bane is currently enjoying a discount on top of that, so you can get him for just $8.50 as of this writing. Unfortunately, Slimer is out of stock, which isn’t surprising, given that your other option for getting him is a $350 set. Might be time to order Bane and crack out Dimensions…

Save 30% On The Mystery Machine

Both Amazon and Walmart are offering the iconic 75902 The Mystery Machine form the Scooby-Doo line for 30% off at just $20.99. To take advantage of this deal from Amazon, you’ll need to be a Prime member, otherwise Walmart offers free delivery on orders over $50 or free in-store pick-up with no minimum. You get three out of the five meddlin’ kids in this set: Fred, Shaggy, and Scoobs. You’ll need to get the 75904 Mystery Mansion (which is on sale at 16% off on Amazon) to get Velma and Daphne in one fell swoop. That and the Mystery Machine set is like having one whole episode in your hands.

    Review: 75904 Mystery Mansion

One of the more sinister (but understandable, from a marketing perspective, I guess) things that LEGO does is spreading characters across multiple sets, so if you want to build an entire group, you need to buy every set in a series. In larger setups like Star Wars, I get that, or even in Super Hero sets… but for stuff like Scooby Doo and the Hobbit, where the group is the central focus of the story, it’s kind of annoying. I’m still not certain that all of the dwarves from the Hobbit were released, but there were like seventeen million different characters in that movie.

At least with Scooby Doo, you really only need to buy two sets to complete the gang, the fantastic Mystery Machine set, and this set. Of course, you’d miss some decent bad guys and you have to buy the most expensive set. I was rather indifferent to this set, initially. It looked interesting, but I didn’t know if it was $89.99 interesting. I figured I could grab Velma and Daphne on the aftermarket and be done with it. That plan was sort of dashed when my daughter went crazy for Halloween stuff last year (she’s three, so holidays are a big thing), and I wanted some decorations. So reviewing 75904 Mystery Mansion was suddenly on the docket.

It weighs in at a respectable 860 pieces and includes 6 (7 if you want to count Scooby) minifigs, which is frankly a lot better than some of the other sets in this price range. There are also a lot of things that stand out just glancing at it, like pumpkin heads, the clock, and plenty of windows and purple parts. So maybe $89.99 for a decoration and completing the Scooby Gang was going to end up as worth it.

  • Review: 75900 Mummy Museum Mystery

    Review: 75900 Mummy Museum Mystery

Given the contentious nature of stickers in LEGO sets, it’s always shocking when a set comes along that features a sticker set so awesome that it’s the real highlight of the set. There have been a few sets out there like that, 3221 LEGO City Truck, Hulk’s Helicarrier Breakout, and Rebel and Imperial stickers from the early Battle packs all come to mind. I wanted to review 75900 Mummy Museum Mystery because the stickers included had one of the more meta references ever in a set, the inclusion of Johnny Thunder, from LEGO Adventures fame.

It’s touches like that, along with the faithful adaptation of critical pieces of what made Scooby Doo so fantastic, that have made these sets pretty fun to build and review. I was pretty indifferent to this theme originally, and only wanted the mystery machine, but have really come around to it overall (even if it still stinks that I only get Velma in one set).

Of course, there is kind of a downer to this set, and that’s the $14.99 price tag for only 110 parts, in a size that would have typically been $12.99 in the past. On the surface, everything about this set seems to fit into the lower price; while it’s only $2, I don’t like the prospect of LEGO trying to kill off the $13 price point like they already have the $10 one… and this set strikes me as testing out doing just that. So we just need to ask ourselves if a Johnny Thunder sticker enough to forgive that every time I see one of these sets I start humming the Scooby Doo themesong to myself?

  • Review: 75901 Mystery Plane Adventures

    Review: 75901 Mystery Plane Adventures

My initial interest in the Scooby Doo sets pretty much amounted to “I want the gang and the Mystery Machine,” but as the sets were revealed, the wants expanded to “okay, those stickers with the mummy are cool” and “THAT IS A PUMPKIN HEAD!” All of a sudden, I was looking at the fact that I would very likely have to buy every single one of the Scooby Doo sets to meet my needs.

On it’s surface, this seems to be the easiest of the sets to skip. Only the bad guy is really new, though the Scooby Head is also unique. The set itself has basically nothing to do with Scooby Doo, unless we’ve confused Fred from Big Hero 6 with Shaggy, and he’s providing an Iron-Man R&D budget to the gang. Just sayin’, these were basically homeless kids driving around in a van to abandoned amusement parks… I don’t think they could afford a custom-built plane decorated in their color schemes.

Honestly, I ended up reviewing 75901 Mystery Plane Adventures because I bought it at a LEGO Store when I needed a small-ish set to get a promo or something like that. At $19.99, this is the second-cheapest Scooby Doo set, but also only comes with 128 parts, suddenly making all the Force Awakens sets look like some good parts value. On the other hand… pumpkin head!

  • Review: 75902 The Mystery Machine

    Review: 75902 The Mystery Machine

There will always be a fond place in my heart for Scooby-Doo. While I was born after it’s initial explosion (it started in 69 and had several seasons in the 70s), I grew up in the 80s, when Saturday Morning Cartoons and afternoon syndication were what dominated our childhood brains. It’s sad that the idea of Saturday morning is no longer a thing, thanks to stuff like Netflix, YouTube, and kids doing too much stuff, because highly unlikely we’ll get another show that can have the broad influence and sweep to a whole generation (or two) like Scooby did.

Of course, when you watch the show, there’s probably nothing more iconic in it than the Mystery Machine that the Scooby gang drove around (often with the Harlem Globetrotters). It was a glorious testament to drugs + art + cars being a wonderfully terrible combination, and as much a part of the show as Shaggy and Scooby were. There’s a part of all of us 80s kids that sees a van and wishes it could be painted one of two ways… A-Team or Mystery Machine, so there was a whole ton of excitement when this set was first revealed. Given this love, I jumped at the chance to review 75902 The Mystery Machine, mostly because I always need another vehicle from my childhood in the collection.

This set continued a few LEGO trends, both awesome and unfortunate. At 301 parts and $29.99, it’s awesome to see the iconic vehicle in the line at a low price point. We’ve seen more of LEGO trying to get the recognizable vehicles into lower-priced sets, so I really like seeing the Mystery Machine at this price. The unfortunate part is that this line continues the whole “can’t get the female characters in those low-priced sets” trend. Velma and Daphne are just as important as Fred is, so I would have loved to see them all show up along with this. That being said, there’s hopefully a lot else to like in this set, and some real Scooby-Doo features for the fans in us all.

Scooby-Doo Trailer Continues To Build On LEGO Dimensions

I hope there’s a line where Batman says he’s worked with these kids before, but either way we now have a good look at the expansion for Scooby-Doo in the upcoming Dimensions game. I’m already sold, but every little bit helps and the animated trailer showing them building their portal is a really nice touch.

September 27th needs to hurry up and get here…
