Designer Con Wrap Up

Update: Due to a gross, gross, GROSS typographical error, I had to reupload the video.

Designer Con came and went this past weekend. It was a great show as it is every year with some of the most diverse art under one roof. I was part of the Studs group that had a large booth presence that featured OneLug‘s Last March of the Ents, Brandon Griffith‘s Star Wars Chess Set Trilogy, FBTB‘s LEGO Star Wars mural, and host of other MOCs by Tommy Williamson, Guy Himber, Remi and Alyse Gagne, Matt Armstrong, Gary McIntire, Ryan Wood and Bruce Lowell.

One of the highlights of our booth was a speed build of 10221 Super Star Destroyer. I shot a time lapse video of the build at 1 frame per second and stitched it all together in the video above. This was the first known attempt at a speed build for this set. We set the world record at 1 hour, 31 minutes, and 38 seconds. The table we were building on was not ideal. So we had to borrow some space from another table, that’s why the main build of the ship disappears off camera for a few minutes. In hindsight, the main build should have been on the side of the table closest to the camera for a better view of the progress. Oh well. There’s always next year.

I took a handful of shots of other merchandise at the show, choosing to focus on Star Wars themed items. But now that I think of it, I should have taken more photos of other products. It’s really a great show, centered around the artist and the art they create. I highly suggest making an effort to go next year. We’ll be there again for sure.

PotC Represented At Steam

This gigantic Pirates of the Caribbean mosaic made an appearance at Steam: The Great Western LEGO Show held in Swindon UK. You can head over to TBB and check out the recap posted by guest reviewer JasBrick. I find it interesting that some folks from the UK still managed to make it to Brickcon last weekend despite an event taking place in their own backyard. I really must check out Brickcon one day, but Steam definitely wins for the better name in my book.

Brickcon Wrap Up: Exhibit Hall

IMG_0016

I finally got around to uploading my pics from the exhibit hall at Brickcon 2011. You’ll have to pardon the lack of description or appropriate titles. Unfortunately my camera battery ran out before I could finish and stupid me left my battery charger at home. D’oh. Anyways, I had a blast and am looking forward to next year’s event. Though mind blowing, the exhibit hall was such a minor part of the whole experience. I found the building competitions, panels, and after hours get togethers to be the most interesting and fun parts of the con. If you want to take a peek at all the awesome that was the exhibit hall, there’s a set for that with 275 pictures for you to browse through. For even more pictures, there’s a group for that.

Brickcon Is Right Around The Corner!

Anybody Excited?

This weekend, starting Thursday September 29 going through Sunday October 2, Northwest Brickcon will be in full swing in Seattle, Washington. This will be my first AFOL convention and I’m pretty excited about attending. If you plan on going as a registered attendee, Andrew over at Brothers Brick posted this handy dandy article about how to prepare for the trip, everything from packing your MOCs to the cheapest way of getting from the airport to the convention hall. If you plan on going for the exhibition, the public days are Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm.

If on Sunday you find yourself looking for something to do, join me and Andrew as we will be co-hosting a panel. On Sunday October 2, from 2pm to 3pm, we’ll be hosting “LEGO Blogging with FBTB & TBB”. The full description reads as follows:

Join Ace Kim of From Bricks to Bothans and Andrew Becraft from The Brothers Brick, along with their crews, for what is sure to be a lively panel discussion about running two of the most popular LEGO fan sites on the web. Learn how the sites got started and some of the things they’ve learned along the way, from how to pay the bills to moderating an ever-growing community.

Yeah, I’m pretty nervous. So come out and learn all our secrets. Ask a question and you may walk away with a T-shirt. Look for us in Orcas aka Classroom A.

21010 Robie House Release Party Saturday 8/27

21010 Robie House - Front Building

Just a reminder that tomorrow Saturday August 27, 2011, there will be a “release party”, and I use that term loosely, held at the actual Robie House that Frank Lloyd Wright built. Of course, this only matters to people living in the Chicago area but if you’re one of those people and want to be one of the first to own what is for sure going to be the next gold standard for Architecture sets, you can pick one up between the hours of 10am to 4pm. Adam Reed Tucker will be on hand to talk about the set and possibly sign his autograph. Museum members can purchase the set for $179.99, saving 10% off of MSRP. Non-member price is $199.99 The Robie House is located at 5757 S. Woodlawn Ave Chicago, IL 60637.

If you don’t plan on going, the official on sale date for the set is September 1. We’ll announce its availability here if it’s any sooner.

FBTB Parts Draft Three

Now that BothCon and ComicCon are behind us, it’s time we got back to bidness. Who’s ready for a parts draft?

Third time’s the charm, right? We’re going to run things slightly differently this time. Instead of trying to restrict participants to one continent or another and trying to balance almost a dozen different schedules to find a perfect date and time, we’re just going to give you the date and you sign up if you can make it.

What are we drafting? 10 copies of Atlantis set 8061 Gateway of the Squid:

The draft will happen at 10 am PST on Saturday August 6th, which should give quite a number of our membership the possibility of participating.

Further amendments to the process as discussed after the last draft will be put into effect here.

Draft registration will commence on Wednesday August 3rd at 12 pm PST, which you can do in this thread here by simply posting your desire to participate. Feel free to post any questions or comments in the thread; anyone attempting to register before the clock hits noon on August 3rd will be disqualified from entering. I will then confirm your registration via private message and give you payment instructions, and our draft order will be decided by the order I receive payment from participants. Easy, right?
