    Nintendo Direct 2.17.2021

We got a ton of games, so we’re going to split this up and write about the games we’re interested in. That seems fair.

Pyra and Mythra, two anime girls from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, are the new fighter for Smash Ultimate. It looks like they’ll be similar to Zelda and Shiek from Melee, being able to switch between both characters.

Aside from that, I’m not sure if they’re going to have a deeper gimmick, like Steve, or be more traditional, like Sepiroth. Sakurai will likely have a breakdown here in a few weeks so we can learn more about them.

    They come out in March.

    Fall Guys

I hope this game is still relevant. It’s a great Switch game, and I’m glad to see it come to the system. Fall Guys really hit hard and then pretty much vanish last Spring, so maybe this is its second coming. It’ll launch Summer 2021.

    Outer Wilds

The Outer Wilds, aka probably my (Eric) favorite gaming experience of all time, is coming to Switch. The more people who can play this game, the better. I’m probably going to end up getting it just for the portability. Please everyone who’s reading this: buy this game when it comes out this Summer.

Famicom Detective Club – The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club – The Girl Who Stands Behind

    • Never released in America
    • Japanese murder / ghost mysteries visual novel style games
    • Comes out May 14

    Samura Warriors 5

The latest in the “Warriors” franchise. Described as “1 vs 1,000”, so if you’re into that kind of spectacle, this is your game. I’m a sucker for a historical (ish) Japanese setting, so I may end up checking this one out. Comes out Summer 2021.

    Legend of Mana

I’ve (Nick) owned the Legend of Mana game multiple times, but never actually gotten around to playing it. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time in the PSX ecosystem, but I loved Secret of Mana on the SNES, so it seemed like a solid game. Problem was that my PSX hated my TV at the time, so I played only a handful of things. I’ve always wanted to go back to it, and an upcoming article about a series of playthroughs I’m doing means this will certainly be in the pile. It’s a remaster of the PS1 game, with new graphics and music, and comes out June 24th.

    Monter Hunter Rise

    • Exclusive to Switch
    • A Monster Hunter special deluxe edition Switch console will also be released as well as a Monster Hunter Pro Controller.
    • Everything comes out March 26

    Mario Golf: Super Rush

The biggest genuine surprise for me in the Direct (Nick), I’m very excited for a new Mario Golf game. The original NES game is a cult classic, the N64 is weirdly one of the best games for that console, and the Gamecube game was fun. Since that time, though, it’s only really existed in the mobile space and hadn’t seen much love. Overall, the mix of seemingly optional motion controls, a new multiplayer speed golf mode, and single player and RPG modes looks like this will be another crazy winner in the series. It comes out on June 25th.

    Tales from the Borderlands

Tales from the Borderlands – the 2014 Telltale game – is coming to Switch on March 24. As far as Telltale games go, I’ve never so much as heard anyone* mention this one. So…take that as you will. Hidden gem? Commercial flop? Your call. Comes out March 24th.

    * Nick here, chiming in that I’m aware of this game. It’s weird in the whole Borderlands saga, as it tells a whole lot of background stories for fan favorites, especially Borderlands 2 villain Handsome Jack. This is widely considered the best of the Telltale games outside of the first Walking Dead one, for those who follow it. I’m kind of curious who is actually behind it, given that Telltale imploded a couple of years ago.

    Capcom Arcade Stadium

    • 1943 for free
    • pay for everything else
    • Available today!

Stubbs the Zombine in Rebel without a Pulse

    • Comes out March 16th.

    No More Heroes 3

    • Travis Touchdown vs. Aliens
    • Comes out August 27th

    Neon White

    • Another Annapurna Interactive game that looks slick and fun!
    • Comes out this Winter 2021.

DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power

None of us want to write about this one so I guess I’ll just get it out of the way. This game looks like a cash grab. Apparently it’s a Cartoon Network show, so that’s something. I can’t think of a single redeeming thing about it, but I’m a cynical man, so maybe there’s some preteen girls out there who are all about this game. Who knows. I’m sure DC did their research. June 4th on this one.

Plants vs. Zombies Battle for Neighborville

    • Frame rates and resolution for this game should be excellent.
    • I’m being sarcastic.
    • Comes out March 19, 2021.

    Miitopia

    • 3DS game rerelease.
    • It looks just as boring as the original.
    • Comes out May 21.

Animal Crossing: New Horizon Super Mario Items

    • If i’m following the trailer right, the first Mario item you get is free, and then it unlocks a bunch of items in Nook’s shop.
    • There’s a warp pipe item that will let you fast travel between two locations on your island.
    • Mario items will be available starting February 25th.

    Project: Triangle Strategy

    • Pretty sure the Octopath Traveler team is behind this.
    • decision based dialogue
    • Turn based tactical RPG.

    Star Wars Hunters

    • 3rd person shooter
    • Free to play, pay to win!
    • Zynga
    • Hard pass. I’m not going to list a release date for this trash. That’s how much I hate it.

    Knockout City

    • Dodgeball? Dodgeball. Very Fortnite-ish.
    • Comes out May 21

    World’s End Club

    • Comes out May 28

    Hades

Hades, my (Eric again) 2020 Game of the Year, gets a physical release on Switch, alongside a digital copy of the soundtrack (or, you know, just use Spotify), and a gorgeous 32-page art book. I can’t recommend this game enough, and I’ve heard people describe it as perfect for Switch. You can get the digital version right now, or grab the physical copy on March 19th.

    Ninja Gaiden Master Collection

    • Ninja Gaiden Master Collection includes Sigma, Sigma 2, and 3: razor’s edge
    • Comes out June 10

Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity Expansion Pass

    • $20 bucks for DLC that comes out in two waves. Apparently, there’s more calamity to play through than what the original game gave you.

    Bravely Default II

    • Comes out in a little over a week, February 26th.

    Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins Resurrection

    • February 25th

    SaGa Frontier Remastered

I’m (Nick) decently excited about this game… the only SaGa games I’ve played are the first in the series, released as Final Fantasy Legends in the US on the original GameBoy. The collection for those just came out the Switch, so clearly we’re getting more in that line showing up as Square continues to release more and more games from their back catalog. Yet they haven’t re-released Final Fantasy I or II on anything other than mobile platforms outside of Japan (where it got a 3DS release) in more than a decade. Hopefully this is a continued sign that more and more of the classic catalogs will be coming, after this drops on April 15th.

    Apex Legends

I’m getting kinda burnt out on Call of Duty: Warzone, so I might check this one out. Switch has never been a great console for FPS in my opinion, but, again, if it’s portable, that’s good enough for me.

    Then, Eiji Aonuma walked out.

Nothing new from Breath of the Wild 2, which, honestly, didn’t expect too much there. A lot of people were hoping against it, despite Nintendo plainly telling them that the Direct would focus on 2021 releases… Nintendo fans continue to build up hype despite being told not to. However, director Eiji Aounuma did announce The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.

Skyward Sword is by no means a great Zelda game. But it’s a pretty darn good game. I replayed it on Wii two years ago and it held up surprisingly well, aside from the motion controls.

Astonishingly, the Switch remaster will give the option to use the right stick instead of motion controls to allow people who own the Lite enjoy it as well. I have no idea if that will work, and a sneaking suspicion it will be awkward as hell. However, with the vastly improved motion control tech of the Switch compared to the Wii, I have a feeling using the JoyCons like a sword and shield will actually feel pretty good.

    They’re also releasing a special pair of Zelda-themed joy-cons:

Everything will be released in a few months, on July 16. 2021 is Zelda’s 35th Anniversary, so this may not be all the Zelda surprises in store for this year.

And now, hear Ace gush about Splatoon:

    Splatoon 3

I had some predictions on what we’d see in the direct: Zelda, Pokémon, and Metroid seeing as to how they are all hitting anniversaries this year. None of that panned out except we did get Skyward Sword HD, which isn’t great imo. I had one wishlist item and it was Splatoon 3. I was really not expecting the Direct to end with this. This trailer pretty much saved the entire Direct for me. I’ll be dissecting what we see in a separate post.

  • Nintendo Direct Tomorrow – Keep Your Expectations Tempered

Nintendo Direct Tomorrow – Keep Your Expectations Tempered

If I had to guess, we’re probably going to see the new Smash Bros Ultimate fighter. I’m not sure what else. Apparently 2021 is Zelda’s 35th Anniversary, so perhaps we’ll get something through that.

Other than that, I’m expecting the usual slew of indie games and watching Twitter users slowly lose their mind.

  • Nintendo’s Mario Red & Blue Edition Switch Goes On Sale Tomorrow, Probably Tonight

Nintendo’s Mario Red & Blue Edition Switch Goes On Sale Tomorrow, Probably Tonight

Tomorrow is February 12. It’s the day that Nintendo’s newest themed Switch, Mario Red & Blue Edition, goes on sale as part of the Mario 35th Anniversary. It’s also the same day that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury goes on sale but we’re not here to talk about that.

The Red & Blue system is pretty dope. You get a pair of red Joy-con controllers, blue Joy-con grips, a red dock, a red Switch, a blue Joy-con grip, a screen protector and a special carrying case. They could have done a little more with the branding, like adding some icons or graphics to the back of the Switch like they did with Animal Crossing, or add some blue suspender graphics to the front of the dock. Right now it’s just very, very red.

And speaking of red, I do believe this is the third red color we are getting in the Joy-cons. Nintendo’s product page lists them as “Red” and not “Neon Red” like the original ones. They are not as dark as the dark red Joy-con set either that came with the Mario Odyssey Switch bundle some years back.

The redness isn’t dealbreaker for me though, because I still plan on getting one. My current Switch’s battery life isn’t what it used to be. And plus I’m a bit of a sucker for special editions.

How To Buy Mario Red & Blue Edition Nintendo Switch

The release date is tomorrow, which means it may go on sale at various retailers tonight at the stroke of midnight Eastern time. This is NOT a PS5 situation all over again because as far as I can tell, no retailer has put up any pre-orders. I’ve mostly set my sights on Target. The mobile app showed them in stock at all of my local Targets before they updated it and removed that ability. But the listing still shows that it’s “Coming February 12”.

Best Buy‘s listing page says “Coming Soon”. I signed up for notifications on Amazon the day they listed the console but never got anything, so I assume they’re sticking with the release date as well. Either Nintendo is strict with their retail partners about release dates and pre-orders or the big box retailers learned their lesson with the PS5/Xbox fiasco. Either way, sticking to a release date takes the guesswork out of it all. And given that this isn’t a next-gen system release, there isn’t that pent-up demand so acquiring one should be relatively easier. I’m hoping it will be anyway.

So yeah, tonight at 9pm Pacific or sometime after the stroke of midnight. If you’re looking to get one, good luck to you!

  • Mario 35th Anniversary My Nintendo Missions Wave 2 Detailed

Mario 35th Anniversary My Nintendo Missions Wave 2 Detailed

I’ve been a bit lax in posting any additional information regarding Wave 2 rewards for the Mario 35th Anniversary My Nintendo Missions. Given how badly the distribution was for Wave 1 Pins, I was hoping Nintendo would see the error of their ways and change things up a bit. The good news is, they’ve improved the process a bit. The bad news? You need to do more missions to get the goods.

The tricky thing is though is that you need to have completed at least some of the in-game events to reach that threshold. The other wrinkle is that purchase of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury game is required to get the pin set. And of course you’ll want to get the pin set because why else are we talking about this. It’s similar to the Wave 1 pin set that required the purchase of Super Mario 3D All-Stars game so I can’t really fault Nintendo for that one. Some of the in-game missions though are a bit unfair if people don’t own any of the games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Splatoon 2 or do not subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online. Here’s hoping that Nintendo will release more missions to make it a bit easier because as it stands now if you do all of the missions including the ones that require a purchase but none of the in-game events, you would currently stand at 14, one shy of the required 15. There’s still quite a bit of time between now and March 31st, when all of this is supposed to end, so chances are good we’ll be seeing more missions.

For Wave 1, if you completed 5 out of 6 missions, you were able to generate a code to use on the Nintendo digital store front to get the pins. The problem is that there weren’t enough pins for everyone who qualified. Nintendo’s changed things a bit in that codes will be distributed after the release of the Super Mario 3D Land + Bowser’s Fury game. The question now is if they’ll be distributed randomly, given to those who completed 15 missions in order, or if they made a TON of pins to go around.

The Mario-themed Splatfest Kicks Off Today!

The special Mario 35th Anniversary Splatfest for Splatoon 2 is happening this weekend starting today at 2pm Pacific, which is like in less than an hour for me. Maybe I’ll finally stop playing Minecraft Dungeons long enough to get back into the game. You can choose between Team Pearl for Super Mushroom (’cause she needs all the help she can get) and Team Marina for Super Star. The Splatfest runs until 2pm Pacific Sunday January 17th. Me? I’m going team Mushroom because the Mushroom was the very first power-up in a Mario game. Though it’s look has evolved over the years, it’s still as iconic as ever.

  • Some Walmart Nintendo-related Deals

    Some Walmart Nintendo-related Deals

Walmart’s got a couple of things on sale worth mentioning.

First up is the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller + Super Mario Odyssey digital code bundle for $69. The MSRP for the bundle is $99, which is already a pretty good deal. The regular price for the Pro Controller alone is $69 so getting Super Mario Odyssey practically for free is a nice little bonus. Have one but not the other? You can probably sell the thing you don’t want pretty easily.

Next up are Nintendo eShop cards for 10% off their face value. This applies to the $10, $35, and $50 dollar cards. It’s only 10% but if you wait for a digital title to go on sale, you can net additional savings. The gift cards will be delivered digitally.

  • Nintendo Adds Additional My Nintendo Super Mario Missions

Nintendo Adds Additional My Nintendo Super Mario Missions

Since our last update on the My Nintendo Super Mario Missions a few weeks ago, Nintendo’s added a couple more things to do to the mix, some of which are easy and one requires possession of a specific game.

Explore the Super Mario Bros. 35th anniversary page on Amazon.com

Visit this Amazon page showing various Super Mario Bros. 35th merch, scroll down about halfway until you see the section above, and click on the image. You’ll be taken back to the Nintendo page where the mission should now be marked complete as long as you were signed into your account there. As a bonus, you’ll also earn 100 Platinum Points.

Sign up for the Super Mario Maker 2 Ninji Speedrun Online Challenge

The next two challenges are like a two-fer: one is to sign up for the Speedrun challenge and the other is to actually participate. Signing up is easy, as all you have to do is go to https://mario.nintendo.com/challenge/ and click on the “Enter Now!” button. You don’t even have to own the game to complete this one. You have until November 24, 2020, at 6:00 pm PT to do that. You’ll need to be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber to qualify.

Participate in the Super Mario Maker 2 Ninji Speedrun Online Challenge

This is the other half of the two-fer. After signing up, you actually need to play the course. The upside is that the 35 players with the shortest times will be awarded a commemorative coin. The huge downside is that it looks like you’ll have to own the game to complete it. If you don’t own it, maybe you can borrow a friend’s copy. I don’t own it, and I’m not about to fork out $60 bucks for it either, so that’s the route I’m going to take. I’m hoping this is one of those optional challenges like Mario Kart Tour was; as in you may need to complete a certain number of missions and this one may be skippable. Like entering, you have until November 24, 2020 to complete this mission.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Is Now Available

I kinda blanked on this this morning. But Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit went on sale today. Best Buy seems to be sold out, but Amazon has the Mario set right now. Target online is also out, but there may be stock available at local stores (though in my area purchasing online for in-store pickup is not an option). Walmart doesn’t seem to have it online at all but they may have some in stores. Good luck trying to get one!

  • First Impressions: Super Mario 64

    First Impressions: Super Mario 64

So many people were hyped for some old Mario games remade for Switch. What we ended up getting in Super Mario 3D All-Stars was not it. They ended up being ports emulated on the Switch with higher resolution graphics, but no “remasters” of any kind. Still, that didn’t diminish my excitement for the three-pack at all. I’ve never played any of those games, not even Galaxy despite owning it on the Wii. Super Mario 64 and Sunshine were held in such high regard by gamers though, I looked forward to playing them for the first time. I put in a couple of hours a night into Super Mario 64 and got about 30 or so stars. I think it’s enough for a first impression.

    The Camera Is Hot Garbage

I’ve been spoiled by more modern games where the right stick is used to manuever the camera around. You can sort of do that in Super Mario 64 but only on certain parts of the level and only in 1 of 6 or 8 predetermined angles. You want to look around with more granular controls? Well, you can only do that if you’re not moving and by pressing up on the right stick first. I don’t think I’ve ever played another game where the camera changes position so much when running down a path. And while the camera is changing position, having to change the direction you’re pushing on the left stick too. Obviously, compensating movement for the change in camera orientation should be a no brainer, but when there are such dramatic sweeps it makes platforming way more difficult than necessary. Play against the camera’s orientation shouldn’t be part of the platforming experience if you’re trying to jump and navigate around a level.

And the buzz sound it makes when you try and move the camera to a position it can’t be moved to? I’m beginning to hate that sound.

There Is Some Backtracking, Maybe A Lot

I’m pretty sure this is the first Mario game where backtracking is required to 100% the game. Once you get your first star, you can replay a level to get the next star. Each level has something like 8 stars each, but you can only do a couple of them right off the bat. Apparently you need to get some power ups from other levels to be able to access the other stars. Get the power up, and then go back to the other levels. Rinse and repeat.

One of the problems is that if you look at that screen, you really have no idea how many stars there are if you didn’t already know before hand. I guess what I’m trying to say here is that the UI leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe when you get all 8 stars for a level it gets stamped in some way as being complete. No matter what, the amount of backtracking required is going to be a lot to an almost tedious amount, and this is coming from me who’s enjoying Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Some Of The Stars Challenges Are Frustratingly Stupid

Maybe I’m not a Good Gamer with capital G’s, but I think I’m fairly competent in both reflexes and smarts to be able to clear objectives. But some of these challenges are just lame.

The penguin ice slide race is one of them. The controls when sliding are a bit more sensitive than what you’d expect causing a lot of oversteer and falling off of the slide into the abyss. I hated this level. I must have burned through about 15 lives to finish this one.

The worst has got to be any of the swimming levels where you have to swim against the jetstream to get to the star. This one requires steady timing on pressing the stroke button to get to it. It would not be a dumb idea to use a metronome for this one. This one is also exacerbated by the shoddy camera. Mario will get pushed and pulled into different angles from your camera’s point of view forcing you to correct your angle of approach. Over correction will happen more often than not, making the challenge, like the heading says, frustratingly stupid. Or is it stupidly frustrating. I don’t know but it doesn’t matter, y’all get my drift.

    In Conclusion…

Yeah, Super Mario 64 kind of sucks. I realize this was the first Mario game in 3D and Nintendo was sort of exploring new territories, so a lot of the above issues can be forgivable. A lot of of the game mechanics we’re used to today probably had its roots in some way, shape, or form to Super Mario 64 either because it worked (backtracking to increase playtime / replayability) or it was so bad it needed improving (like that camera). Like I said, I’ve been spoiled being able to control the camera any which way in modern games but it is so terrible in SM64 it makes me not want to play it. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m going to finish the dumb game. Maybe the magic moment where one is supposed to fall in love with the game will happen a little later. So far, it hasn’t happened yet. I’ll have to see.
