A Year of Polybags 182/260: 30608 Kendo Lloyd Review

The LEGO NINJAGO Movie brought us some incredible sets large and small. And maybe a handful of ones that weren’t that great. But today’s polybag, 30608 Kendo Lloyd, is one of the better ones.

If the internet is to be believed this was a pre-order bonus for The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Videogame. I could have sworn this one was a pre-order bonus for the game, but I guess I was mistaken. That minifig was great.

And so is this one. Not only does he come with a his blonde hair piece to show off his golden locks while not in training, but a kendo helmet with a gold pattern that was exclusive to this set.

There have been other kendo helmets in other Ninjago sets, but this particular beauty was only available here. The Luhloyd figure was not exclusive, at least don’t believe what Bricklink tells you. It’s one of those “only in this combination of parts” that makes it unique. That kendo helmet though, that’s the real star of the show.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! A simple promotional figure that has one exclusive part. That may or may not be irksome, depending on how you feel about rare minifig accessories. Some fans may cry foul due to only being available with a purchase of a game. I dig it though.

A Year of Polybags 138/260: 30609 Lloyd Review

I’m tired tonight. So I’ll keep today’s review of 30609 Lloyd brief.

The LEGO NINJAGO Movie gave us a couple of great things. The video game was pretty great. The mech designs were awesome both large and small. At least the ones I’ve reviewed but there’s no reason for me to think the others weren’t as awesome. And this minifig is also really nice.

I can’t remember if Lloyd ever looked like this in the movie. I can only assume he did. The green hoodie with hair grey hair sticking out is nice. Bricklink lists the hair as being tan but there’s no mistaking about the one that came in my set: those are light grey hair bangs and not tan. It may not be bluish grey like other light grey elements, but it ain’t for sure no tan! I don’t think I’ve ever seen the mold used outside of NINJAGO Movie sets. The head and torso elements are unique to this polybag, thus making Lloyd unique. It’s a great looking figure with the perfect amount of detailing.

Plus his sword has a fancy gold tassle thing!

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! A nice looking unique minifig, if you’re a fan of Ninjago, you should already own this minifig. And if you don’t it’s worth picking up.

  • A Year of Polybags 102/260: 30428 Green Ninja Mech Dragon Review

A Year of Polybags 102/260: 30428 Green Ninja Mech Dragon Review

Ah this one takes me back. Back when I reviewed the larger version, 70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon, I was going through a personal renaissance of sorts. That review came just a month and a half after I made my LEGO shame public. This was a set I really enjoyed and enjoyed reviewing. It was probably the one and only review where I took the set outdoors and shot picture. So today’s polybag, 30428 Green Ninja Mech Dragon, is a bit of a throwback for me.

Being a mini, I don’t expect any minifigs to come with this set. But had they included a painted trophy fig to put on the lone stud just behind the head I think I would just lost it completely. That would have made this polybag JUST PERFECT! Alas, we are not that lucky.

The body is in two parts and aren’t really noteworthy in any way.

The legs are built at right angles with a round 1×1 plate with a bar handles for feet giving it an elongated look. They look like when a toddler puts on his/her dad’s big work shoes. It’s a bit difficult to have the feet lie flat on a surface. Probably the weakest part of the build.

The tail is pretty awesome. Using a combination of cheese slopes and 1×2 curved slopes, it gives it a nice scaly look. I appreciate the fact that the second “scale” on the each of the tail’s segments use the 1×2 curved slope. The excess part of the element hangs over the ball joint hiding the articulation. It’s really a nice effect that isn’t seen in many of LEGO’s other sets that feature ball joints. And unlike the tail on the larger set, this one won’t swing freely which is great.

And speaking of ball joints, they are just everywhere on this set. There are a total of 10 from head to tail. So even if you’re not into the sand green elements, or the awesome mini mech dragon, it’s a great parts pack for the joints alone.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

This set rocks! The LEGO NINJAGO Movie gave us some really awesome mechs, and the polybags are just as great. This 30428 Green Ninja Mech Dragon continues that tradition.

  • A Year of Polybags 7/260: LEGO The NINJAGO Movie 30379 Quake Mech Review

A Year of Polybags 7/260: LEGO The NINJAGO Movie 30379 Quake Mech Review

Out of all the memorable sets that came out of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Cole’s Quake Mech has got to be one of my favorite ones. The second I laid eyes on the Segway-inspired mech, I was hooked. I may have squealed a bit when I pulled out this polybag, 30379 Quake Mech for today’s review, that’s how much I love it. It is basically a unicycle mech and if those two words combined together doesn’t make you chuckle you just might be dead inside.

Now obviously, it being a unicycle, there’s going to be a balance issue. There’s no motor or computer to keep the thing upright like a Segway. The System-scale set worked around this by building in a kickstand in the back which was pretty smart. It was discrete and didn’t draw your attention. The mini set does something different to get around the balance issue.

Two 3×3 black dishes sandwich a brick-built tire that is flat on the bottom. The illusion works perfectly! Two robot arms sort of just sit on top to look like a fork and while they’re unattached to the dish, it’s not really an issue because your fingers will naturally grab the mech at its waist keeping the robot arms as flush as possible against the wheel.

For being a mini build, the arms are quite articulated. There’s a pseudo ball joint at the shoulder. I say pseudo because while there is a ball joint, it’s range of motion is quite limited compared to what a ball join should be. You can swing the arm back, but there’s no way to have it swing forward. There’s also articulation at the elbow and the wrist.

I’m always fascinated on how joints can be made for LEGO mechs and the shoulders on this mini build was a learning experience. The bar with tow ball does double duty not only as the joint connection but also the connection point for the 1×1 round “speaker” that Cole’s Quake Mech uses to pump out the jams. I’m not sure how the bar with tow ball could have been connected better to give a better range of motion and still provide a connection point for the grey 1×1 speaker round plate. If there is a solution it probably would have increased the size of the overall build. That’s not something I think is totally necessary because as it is now, I think this model is perfect.

Well, almost perfect. The only things missing are his yellow battle standards that attach to the backs of the shoulders. A simple 1×1 yellow plate with clip might have sufficed, and serendipitously enough, there is already an attachment point for said clips. Really that’s the only thing that could possibly make this diamond of a set shine a bit brighter.

Does It Suck or Does It Rock?

If you haven’t guessed it by now, this set rocks! For its size, Cole’s mini unicycle Quake Mech is very well articulated in the arms. The brick-built tire cleverly uses two dishes that mask the brick-built tire and make it look nice and round. And the arms are more articulated than some of LEGO’s larger mech sets. I own the bigger System-scale set, 70632 Quake Mech, but, sadly, like most everything else in my collection it remains unbuilt. I fully intend on building it and now that this polybag review is done, I may go dig it out and do such a thing.

No tricks here, just a break dancin’ Quake Mech that’s perfectly balanced.

Nintendo Discounting A Bunch of LEGO Games

Sometimes when cross platform games go on sale, I’ve noticed that the same title on the Nintnedo Switch doesn’t really get the same deal. But right now, it’s the Switch’s time to shine because a bunch of LEGO games are on sale digitally. You can buy these direct from the site or through the Switch’s eShop. Take a look:

No affiliate links because I don’t think they have an affiliate program for the eShop. These are just great deals to keep your kids busy this summer while under lockdown.

  • LEGO Shop@Home Black Friday Weekend Sale Day 2

LEGO Shop@Home Black Friday Weekend Sale Day 2

Anyone super annoyed by Amazon’s handling of the UCS Falcon sale? Yeah me too.

But there are really great deals to be had still. Here are today’s 30% off sales items at LEGO Shop@Home and Brand Retail locations.

And as usual, there are more things on sale for 20% off. One item of note is 76108 Sanctum Sanctorum Showdown from Infinity War for $79.99. It’s the only set that I know of that has Iron Spider-Man.

I’m a little late in posting this but maybe if you’re out and about and near a LEGO store, you can still find the NINJAGO City set. LEGO’s overhauled website may not have stuck the landing, but one of the more recent updates is pretty nice: you can now check store stock levels to see any of your nearby stores have a particular set in stock.

Now the question is if you want to brave the traffic and crowds to get it.

As usual, FBTB may receive a small commission from any sales from clicks through our affiliate links in this post. And as always, we thank you for your continued support.

LEGO Shop@Home’s Black Friday Deals Are Now Live

Some of LEGO Shop@Home’s Black Friday Deals are now live. I say some because they are doing a daily deals approach over the next few days. Today though is a big day because 76139 1989 Batmobile is now on sale. But wait there’s more! Here’s a list of current promos going on all weekend or while supplies last:

    • Free 40433 1989 Batmobile – Limited Edition with the purchase of 76139 1989 Batmobile. I reviewed the mini version and scored it 5 stars for its concept and execution despite the model being a little lacking.
    • Free 40338 Christmas Tree holiday set with any LEGO purchase over $120. I reviewed this one too and really liked it. Get the Batmobile and get all of the promos.

On top of the free stuff, there’s some stuff on sale too with hefty discounts ranging from 20-30% off. Some notable items:

There is more at 30% off, like a lot of sets from The LEGO Movie 2. LEGO Star Wars is seeing some at 20%, like the X-wing set, and that UCS Porg set that can’t be discounted enough to make it worth buying.

The site is being glitchy and the checkout process may take a few attempts. Be patient and good luck!
