  • Review: 3815 Heroic Heroes of the Deep

3815 Heroic Heroes of the Deep - 1

A simple, fifteen dollar set featuring both of the main characters and the villain along with an iconic vehicle from the series. Sounds like a great deal right? Well, there are a few catches. (more…)

  • Review: 30130 MINI Black Pearl

    30130 MINI The Black Pearl

There isn’t much to this review so I won’t bother with the more link.

30130 MINI Black Pearl is a Target-exclusive in the US and is only available pre-packaged with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D Blu-ray Limited Edition 5-disc set. In the UK, they were given away earlier this year as a Sun newspaper promotion. Free is about the right price for this set. By itself, it’s a terrible representation of the iconic pirate ship. Since I am not a big Pirates fan nor do I have a 3D television, the only reason I bought it was to do this review and hopefully save a few of you readers out there from making a terrible purchase.

Target-exclusive Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D Blu-ray Limited Edition 5-disc set

What I liked: Nothing. Since technically it’s ‘free’, it’s a neat little bonus to get some extra LEGO bits

What I didn’t: It’s a terrible model. It’s obvious just by looking at the sails how inaccurate the model is. Adding a few more plates and clips and a longer bar for the center could have easily remedied the inadequate number of sails. The MINI model also has an inverted brown cone which I believe is supposed to represent a Crow’s Nest which the Black Pearl doesn’t even have. A 1×1 clip plate could have replaced it and represent the flag. And the bow of the ship? Hideous. I mean, who the heck is designing this thing and what are they basing it off of?

Verdict: Save your $30 bucks and put it towards the System scale 4184 The Black Pearl. Unless you’re a hardcore Pirates fan that has a 3D home theater system and doesn’t mind ugly LEGO sets, you’re better off spending your money on something else.

  • The Clone Wars: Speaking for the Troops

The Clone Wars: Speaking for the Troops

In absence of a new episode of The Clone Wars this week, StarWars.com has released a behind the scenes interview with Dee Bradley Baker, the voice of all the clones in the cartoon, discussing his favorite clones and giving a sneak peak at the episodes to come this season. It’s interesting how he gives each clone their own distinctive vocal pattern, making each a unique character, even though they’re, well, clones.

  • The Dark Knight In “Mood Scale”

    The Dark Knight (Moodland Scale)

I have to admit, I’ve never heard of “mood scale” before I saw this pic, but I dig the concept. Building on what has classically been a mecha platform to create characters, I like it! Flickr user M<0><0>DSWIM brings us these sweet MOCs, and there’s more to view on his photo stream. After learning about it I also found this…

    General Grievous 1

It’s got an awesome pose, great likeness and it’s an overall amazing MOC.

  • Shop@Home November “Brick” Friday Holiday Set

Yesterday, LEGO Shop@Home announced the availability of a free holiday-themed vignette with a purchase of $99 for the month of October.  The promo ad also teased that another set would be available for the annual “Brick” Friday sale next month.  Thanks to Grogall over at Brickset, we now can get a look at the November set.

  • Review: 4184 The Black Pearl

4184 Black Pearl Review - beauty

When the first wave of POTC sets came out in May there was a gaping hole in the collection. While the Queen Anne’s Revenge was a pretty cool ship, where was the Black Pearl, Captain Jack Sparrow’s beloved ship?! Well that gaping hole has finally been filled with the arrival of 4184 The Black Pearl. I took some time last weekend to build the Pearl with my ten year old son Connor. This review is from two perspectives: The jaded, overly critical analysis of a long time LEGO enthusiast, and mine.

  • Batman: Gotham City

    "SOMEONE NEEDS ME ?"

LegoManiac has been teasing this project for the last month and I highly suggest you take a look back through his photostream to check out his project’s evolution. I think the microscale cityscape is fantastic and he really managed to pull off some great effects without the use of photoshop (only the text is shop’d), even the bat signal is lego built. Nothing pleases me more than a creation that’s so well done that it outshines the minifig that inspired it.

  • New LEGO Batman Video Game in 2012

In a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, the president of Warner Interactive revealed a few upcoming projects. One of the projects, which should excite fans of Traveller’s Tales LEGO Video Game series, is a sequel to 2008’s LEGO Batman: The Videogame. Not much else is known at this point and there is no release date yet, but with several LEGO video games due out over the next year, notably LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (Nov. 11, 2011) and LEGO Super Heroes: The Video Game (June 2012), gamers should have their brick-loving hands full.

  • Contest Reminder: Two Weeks To Go!

After midnight tonight you will have less than two weeks remaining to finish building and submit your bounty hunter + ship for our  MOC Madness 2011 Tournament. The entries have been pouring in and I suspect some real heavy hitters are waiting until the final stretch to reveal their models.

To repeat my note from the halfway point post: the cutoff time for submissions is midnight on the 31st (Pacific time) but please do not wait until the last minute to enter! Especially if this is your first time entering a contest and posting on the forum. If there is a problem with your entry or the post itself you will have no time to fix it and you could miss out on the contest as a result. No one wants that to happen, so if you need any help at all feel free to ask in the forum thread or contact me via the private message feature.
