Final Aquaman Trailer Shows off DC’s newfound color, humor

Every time I see a promo or trailer for Aquaman, I keep chanting to myself “please don’t suck, please don’t suck, please don’t suck”… I’m not sure if this says more about me or in my feelings of the current state of the DC Extended Universe. I mean, there are some things going against this movie, like it being DC and being based on the resident punch line, Aquaman (the jokes are easy, but in the comics he’s actually kind of a badass).

But this movie, in particular, has some things going for it… like Jason Mamoa, Color, and jokes. I mean, DC has tried all of these things before… Jason was underused and somewhat underwhelming in Justice League, but I blame that more on Justice League being a hot mess than anything. They did color to great effect in Wonder Woman, and to considerably lesser, gritty, effect in Suicide Squad. Jokes… yeah, not really been their strong suit, unless you count laughing at things you aren’t supposed to laugh at (“the man who can climb anything!” — five seconds later, he’s dead).

In related news, Amazon Prime members in the US can purchase tickets through Amazon for a week-early sneak preview of the movie on December 15th. It will actually be opening in Europe around the same time, but this gets you a whole week of talking to fish jokes over everyone else.

    Aquaman Extended View Trailer

If the first trailer for Aquaman looked really familiar, it’s because we already saw that movie when we watched Black Panther earlier this year. I mean, the underlying story was presented as basically being the same thing, except with 100% more Jason Mamoa and almost assuredly not as good of a villain (since Killmonger is the best villain in pretty much any comic book movie ever).

This longer extended cut shows off that DC is clearly making some different choices with this movie. First… there’s more color in this movie than probably ever single other DC Extended Universe film to date (and that’s giving them credit for all the color that Wonder Woman brought). It’s bright and warm, which is kind of great to see. It also seems to be leaning heavily into Jason Mamoa’s strengths, which are sarcastic comedy and being sexy. More importantly, this trailer seems to be trying to highlight that the story is different between Aquaman and Black Panther, and may be trying to beat Marvel before they can set up a Black Panther vs. Namor story.

My expectations for this movie aren’t super-high. I like to make fun of Aquaman, but he’s actually a pretty awesome hero (and that trident can kill Superman easily… something Comic book Arthur Curry reminds him about from time to time). I would be happy if DC could deliver something on the level of the first Thor or Captain America movies… which had their flaws but are still a fun watch. Maybe this will extend the Wonder Woman magic, and not the Snyder junk, and put DC on the right path. Because we all win when DC and Marvel are competing at the same level…

  • First Aquaman Trailer Maximizes Use of Shirtless Jason Mamoa

First Aquaman Trailer Maximizes Use of Shirtless Jason Mamoa

I’m still not exactly sure what to think of the Aquaman movie. I think the only way that the DC Extended Universe is going to be successful going forward is to build up the rest of the roster not named Batman and Superman. We saw greatness with Wonder Woman, and there was some hope that Justice League was going to do that more… but sadly it pushed Ezra Miller’s Flash and Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman to the edges for the most part. Which is too bad, because the interaction with those two specifically was the best part of the movie.

Even with this trailer, I still don’t know. The CGI underwater, for the most part, looks way too DC, but I do like the look and color of it. More than that, though, DC has already been beaten to the punch on this story: Black Panther has done the “collision of worlds and cultures” thing already… and did it really well. That being said, I welcome DC branching out… let’s be fair, the early Marvel Character pieces aren’t nearly as good as what’s come out since, but they certainly laid some groundwork. And I think we’d all love it if DC movies started to trend “up” in their quality overall. I know I certainly would…

I hope these pics will satisfy some of the comic fans out there who’ve been wishing certain figs would pop up asap!
First up on the DC side we have Mister Freeze, Aquaman, a white suited Batman, Bane, Commissioner Gordon with a SWAT flack jacket, hooded Robin, Scarecrow, Arkham jumpsuit Joker, Penguin and what I believe is Harley Quinn in a nurse disquise. I believe these may or may not be based at least in part on the popular Arkham Asylum/City games that I have not had the pleasure to play, though Gordon and Bane to look like they may be based on their movie counterparts.

Next up on the Marvel side we have Spider-man, Nick Fury (Finally!), Venom, Nova, J. Jonah Jameson, Victor Von Doom and I have no idea who the red winged guy is. Human Fly? A new character from the Ultimate Spider-man cartoon? Hopefully Ace can shed some light on him if no one else can.

Seems like a nice line up to me and I’m betting there will be some others who will pop up sooner or later. Check back tonight as Ace hopes to have some more pics of these figures as an update.

Update: Well, that was fast! Ace has secured official pics of all these figs and more and apparently that red winged guy is Beetle. Guess he got an update since his purple suited days in Web Of Spider-man.
