Review: 76028 Darkseid Invasion
I have a general theory on why the CW shows are popular, and why they are basically the best thing that DC is doing right now (because “good” is a label that’s not even in the same timezone as the movies or comics they’re dumping out)… all of the shows that have come out have focused on the characters secret identities and their lives much more than that of the super hero. Smallville spent nearly a decade before we even saw a suit. Well, that and it’s basically just like Beverly Hills 90210, except with super heroes.
With the LEGO DC sets, they always seem to work out better the closer they stay to the animation and games than to the comics or movies. I’ve ranted about the movies before, and the upcoming Batman vs Superman already spoiled all of the major reveals in the trailer and can’t even test well with internal audiences. DC Comics is coming up on their second (closer to two-and-a-half) reboot in the last four years. The two places where DC really shines has been in their TV shows (well, except Gotham) and cartoons. My daughter loves the DC LEGO movies, and I can’t wait to someday introduce her to Batman TAS.
Honestly, one of big reasons I’m reviewing 76028 Darkseid Invasion is that it’s towards the end of its life and has been seeing some pretty deep discounts. It’s already listed as Sold Out on LEGO Shop@Home, though it’s still available at most retail locations and on places like Amazon.com. It seems like the set should have pretty solid appeal, even at 545 parts and a high $69.99 sticker price. There’s Superman was the only minifig in the set that wasn’t unique when the set first launched (Cyborg has since shown up as a Dimensions fun pack). Green Arrow, Darkseid, and Hawkman were all brand new in the set, and make up key members of the Justice League and one of the big bads of the universe. Perhaps it was just jet fatigue that made me wait on the set so long, or maybe the lack of a Hawkgirl to go with Hawkman (why is she girl and he man), or maybe it was never able to justify full price.

Amazon Discounts 76028 Darkseid Invasion by 31%
For all you last minute shoppers, this would make a good gift. For all you bargain hunters, it’s just another Monday. Amazon is discounting 76028 Darkseid Invasion by a whopping 31% dropping the $69.99 set down to just $47.99! That’s a $22.00 savings. This set includes minifigs of Cyborg, Hawkman, Superman, and Green Arrow and a bigfig of Darkseid himself.
I did not know this until a few minutes ago but it’s actually pronounced Darkside and not Darkseed like I originally thought. I’m a hoot at parties.

LEGO Shop@Home’s Cyber Monday Deals Now Live
LEGO Shop@Home has a few more deals to throw at your wallet. Or have you throw your wallet at. Not sure which way that should go… Anyways. Like their Black Friday deals, these discounts cover a variety of themes, but there are only a handful of sale items this time instead of a gigantic list like we had for Black Friday. Still, there are some pretty good deals to be had. Everything is 20% off except for three items: 76028 Darkseid Invasion, 79015 Witch-king Battle, and 79121 Turtle Sub Undersea Chase are 40% off MSRP. If you’ve been holding out on getting any Pirates sets, this would be a good time to buy as it seems they are all on the Cyber Monday sale list. And one last note: 76015 Doc Ock Truck Heist is labeled as “retiring soon” on the Shop@Home category page.Like Black Friday, you’ll still get free shipping with no minimum and 40139 Gingerbread House for free (yes, they still have some) on all orders $99 or more. Black Friday deals are still going on too; check out this page for the list of deals. These deals are now live and ready for purchase should you be so inclined.

Amazon Discounting Several Licensed Sets
Seems like Amazon has cut the prices on a variety of LEGO sets. Some of the deals are modest, but on sets that have already started to drop out of stores, while others are very nice. Looks like the Imperial Assault Carrier has gone back with the 25% cut, while quite a few others are in the 15-20% range.

76028 Darkseid Invasion Discounted by $10
Right now, both Amazon
and Target are selling 76028 Darkseid Invasion for $10 less for $59.99 instead of what LEGO Shop@Home is charging, $69.99. I’m pretty sure that Amazon’s price was in response to Target’s price as that is Target’s everyday price. It could just be a pricing error so I’m not sure how long that price will last before Mama LEGO calls them up and says, “Dude.” Order from Target with your REDCard and save an additional 5% on top of that.

Next Years’ DC Sets are Bananas. Also, Invisible.
The new picture sets just keep on coming, with finished pics of the DC sets showing up, this time thanks to Toyark and a whole bunch of other places. These had been leaked around various places earlier, but had placeholder characters instead of Gorilla Grodd or Darkseid. I find the Gorilla Grodd goes bananas a particularly striking juxtaposition of amazing minifigure selection, especially the N52 Wonder Woman that I’m so glad wasn’t placeholder art and what looks to be one absolutely terrible set build. I mean seriously, it’s 2014 and the best we can come up with for a net launcher is still “cram that net into an engine?”
The only part of that set I really dig is the little truck cart. We’ve already had pictures of the Sinestro set, so not putting that here, but 76027 Black Manta Deep Sea Strike and 76028 Darkseid Invasion. Given that Black Manta is one of the signature villains of the Aquaman universe, who is a character that’s fun to make fun of but is actually a pretty awesome character (who has a trident that can totally kill Superman)… it makes sense that the centerpiece of the set is about Batman and Robin. I do like scuba Robin though.
The Darkseid breaks the golden rule of DC Super Heroes set, in that “must have Batman.” It still has Superman, as has the other sets that didn’t include Batman, but still, it’s there. The inclusion of Hawkman is good, but I would have loved Hawkman and Hawkgirl in the same set. They are a pair, and should always be together. Green Arrow is cool, as is Cyborg, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that this leaves the DC lineup next year with exactly
1 woman2 women and 1 person of color. They could, and they should, do better. (Thanks to banthafodder for reminding me that Supergirl is also slated to come in the Braniac set)
