Wow. The last DeLorean we got was the CUUSOO set, 21103 The DeLorean Time Machine. It looked like ass and our review more or less said so. Was it a scale issue? Was it the fact that the design changed from submission to final product? The CUUSOO (CUUSOO was Ideas before Ideas was Ideas) site is no longer, but thanks to the Way Back Machine, we can still see what the original submission looked like. It was probably a combination of both of those things because what we ended up getting was such an eyesore, it did the DeLorean a disservice.
LEGO has completely rectified its mistakes of the past though with yesterday’s reveal of 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine. Clearly, the scale is much larger allowing a higher resolution render, capturing all of the angles and details that finally does the machine justice. There’s 1,872 pieces to help bring this machine to life and the results are incredible.
This scaled up DeLorean is a 3-in-1 model, allowing you to build one of three different Time Machines, whichever one you fancy from whichever Back to the Future movie you fancy the most.
I have to assume that the graphical elements are stickers this time around rather than the printed ones we got with the CUUSOO set. There’s no picture of the interior but I can only assume the Flux Capacitor is the right size and displays the proper dates.
The two minifigs you get in this set are the ones you’d expect: Doc Brown and Marty McFly. No Einstein unfortunately. They’re different from the CUUSOO set. Doc Brown is decked out in his futuristic yellow garb from Back to the Future II. I assume Marty’s printing is also a reflection of his appearance from the same movie as he is fundamentally different from his CUUSOO set counterpart.
And if there was any doubt, you will absolutely need to buy three sets so you can display all three versions of the DeLorean at the same time.
