  • Disney Buys Fox For $52.4 Billion

Disney Buys Fox For $52.4 Billion

This deal was in the works for a while now, and to be honest, I didn’t think it would happen this quickly. Disney has agreed to purchase 21st Century Fox in a stock transaction valued at $52.4 billion. The deal still has to be approved by the Justice Department.

I’m still kind of trying to wrap my head around this. So what does this mean exactly? Allow me a moment to put down a bullet list:

    • Well for starters, the X-Men and the Avengers film franchises can now exist in the same universe.
    • There is a small chance that any future Fantastic Four movies won’t suck.
    • Galactus could be something other than a stupid cloud.
    • Deadpool is now Disney-owned.
    • As is Family Guy and The Simpsons.
    • All of Joss Whedon’s shows that aired on fox, like Firefly.
    • If the aliens from the Alien franchise have genders, the female ones would be Disney Princesses.
    • Oh yeah, we could see LEGO sets based other film franchises. Like Die Hard! Bring on a UCS Nakatomi Plaza!

Okay, I’m (partially) kidding about a UCS Nakatomi Plaza. Maybe an Architecture set at least.

This is kind of a big deal. Hard to fathom exactly what will happen but the future of entertainment won’t be the same, that’s for sure.

Edit: This also means Disney is now the majority stakeholder of Hulu. This may change Disney’s plan to offer their own streaming service and concentrate their efforts there. Which means that the rumored Star Wars television show may end up streaming on Hulu.

  • Incredibles 2 Trailer Released Over The Weekend

Incredibles 2 Trailer Released Over The Weekend

How hyped are you for this? I am too excited. Incredibles was/is one of my favorite Pixar movies and if any movie needed a sequel, this would be it. We got Mr. Incredible in the Disney CMF series, now we just need the other family members. One set in costume, one set in civilian clothes, and maybe another of Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl in their retro outfits. Make it happen, LEGO!

  • My Cars 3 10-second Review

    My Cars 3 10-second Review

Cars 3 opened this weekend, and judging by its box office numbers ($53.6 domestic), a lot of people saw it, including yours truly. But enough of the intro, here is my 10-second, spoiler-free review:

Go see it. It’s good enough to make you forget that that steaming pile of crap known as Cars 2 ever existed. Cars 3 is spiritually the true sequel to the original movie and makes a fine movie-going experience. While the Cars franchise isn’t ranked very highly by most Pixar fans or movie critics alike, it is one of my favorites and this one does not disappoint.

  • LEGO Reveals Cars 3 Juniors Sets

LEGO Reveals Cars 3 Juniors Sets

Along with the DUPLO sets, LEGO is also revealing a bevy of Juniors sets as part of the Cars 3 merch onslaught. While there may not be any official System level sets, this is as close as it’s going to get. But that’s just fine with me. Normally, the sets in the Juniors line feature easier builds and fewer piece counts than System sets but this actually works in the Cars 3 line’s favor. The scenery you build is essentially background noise and it allows the real stars of the sets to shine through: the cast of characters. The vehicle builds have not changed since the first series of Cars sets, so they will fit right alongside those vehicles. The smaller builds also reduces the chances that LEGO will repeat the mistakes of the past and make sets that are wholly inaccurate to the source material. So yes, I’m actually looking forward to these sets to complete my Cars universe. The most expensive set weighs in at $34.99 so collecting the series won’t break the bank. Thank you, LEGO!

Set names, prices, pictures, and product descriptions are below the fold.

  • Disney Pixar Releases New Cars 3 Trailer

Disney Pixar Releases New Cars 3 Trailer

Cars 3 will be in theaters on June 16, 2017. I am hoping this movie will redeem the series after that steaming pile known as Cars 2 was. The story seems to be refocused back onto the main protagonist from the first film, Lightning McQueen, so it’s got that going for it, which is nice. But the realism seen in the teaser trailer is gone, perhaps maybe it was from a dream sequence. In any case, I’ll be taking my kids to see this one.

New Month, New Stuff At LEGO Shop@Home

It’s April and new stuff is available at LEGO Shop@Home.

    – Are you a Pirates of the Caribbean fan? With the newest movie right around the corner, LEGO is releasing just three sets as a tie-in to the movie: two BrickHeadz in the form of Captain Jack Sparrow (set # 41593, $9.99) and Captain Armando Salazar (set # 41594, $9.99), and one gigantic set of the Silent Mary (set # 71042, $199.99). The Silent Mary comes with Captain Jack Sparrow, Henry, Carina, Lieutenant Lesaro, Captain Salazar, Officer Magda, Officer Santos and the Silent Mary Masthead, plus two detachable ghost sharks. LEGO previewed the set at Toy Fair and while the set is large and impressive, it seemed extremely delicate and not really prone to being played with and more of a display piece. All one would need now is a giant glass bottle to build it inside of.

    mini-beetle

    – One of the promotions going on right now until 11:59pm EST April 15th or while supplies last is a free mini Volkswagen Beetle with purchase of $50 or more. Free item will be automagically added to your cart once it reaches $50. And the side bonus of getting your order to that threshold is that it will also qualify for free shipping.

  • Beauty And The Beast BrickHeadz

    Beauty And The Beast BrickHeadz

This image was sent to me last night. And color me surprised, but I had assumed that the BrickHeadz line was only for Marvel and DC Super Heroes. This Beauty and the Beast set basically opened the door for more possible themes to get the collectible/buildable figure treatment. More Disney is surely inbound, perhaps Star Wars isn’t too far off. I still don’t know how I feel about this line. While it may not appeal to most LEGO AFOLs, they do make nice desktop ornaments for fans of a particular franchise. It may introduce some new parts, but when it comes to the collectible figures, I think FUNKO has that market cornered pretty well. This is basically that, except you build it yourself. I’m approaching it with an open mind and want to see what else comes.

  • Review: 41149 Moana’s Island Adventure

    Review: 41149 Moana’s Island Adventure

Did you guys see Moana? Did you like it? As an adult male, I have to admit that I LOVED that movie. My wife thinks it’s strange that I liked it so much. I think I liked it better than my daughter. Clearly, I am not in the target demographic for that movie, and there’s some gigantic plot holes that are too big to ignore, but I rather enjoyed it. The LEGO sets based on the movie, however, not so much. If I had reached a certain emotional high from my enjoyment of the movie, then 41149 Moana’s Island Adventure is the exact opposite and had me crashing down into a state of utter disappointment.

Now, see, when I approached this set to review, I try and take the scope of what it is trying to accomplish and then see how it was actually executed. And given the source material, there aren’t a lot of options of what would be viable as a set. 41149 Moana’s Island Adventure attempts to recreate Moana’s island life before she set sail on the open water and just fails miserably.

  • LEGO Announces 71040 The Disney Castle

LEGO Announces 71040 The Disney Castle

Following up on the massive leak over the weekend, The LEGO Group sent over the official assets for their next D2C set, 71040 The Disney Castle. When I first saw the images, I mistakenly assumed the set was going to be called “Cinderella’s Castle” then became puzzled when I saw the minifig selection since it didn’t include Cinderella. But it all makes sense now that I know it’s called “The Disney Castle”. The Disney Castle set comes with five minifigs: Donald, Daisy, Minnie, Mickey, and Tinkerbell, all of which are new except Donald. He looks to be exactly the same as the one released with the CMF series.

The castle is chock full of Disney details and is sure to please any Disney fan, young or old, assuming they have the funds to get it. The set will go on sale on September 1, 2016 for the whopping price of $349.99 USD. Look for VIP Eary Bird Access in mid-August.
