WBIE Shows Off LEGO Dimensions at E3

FBTB is at E3 today and today and tomorrow checking out some LEGO video game goodness. Today we’re in line at the WBIE booth getting ready to watch the LEGO Dimensions trailer in the mini theater they set up. Peppered around the stanchions organizing the queue are these large plexiglass display globes. Each globe has a theme and each theme I’m guessing is recreating a different world or….. dimension….. from the game.

Of particular interest is the Chell minifig that was stuck inside the Land of Oz display. A little further away was the Aperture Science Laboratories globe which featured a brick built sentry and tiled companion cube. Flip through the pictures to see more.

  • New LEGO Dimensions: E3 Portal Trailer Looks Fantastic

New LEGO Dimensions: E3 Portal Trailer Looks Fantastic

Just this morning Lego uploaded a new trailer showcasing the Portal level for Dimensions, and I have to say it looks crazy fun. The test chambers translated really well to brick built environments, GLaDOS feels nice and ominous and is as snarky as ever, and there are all kinds of new game mechanics to help solve different puzzles unique to this version. For the first time I’m interested in the game instead of just being disappointed that the level packs with exclusive minifigures cost so much.

Also, Ryan is down at E3 right now, so he’ll have some hands on impressions of the game tomorrow so look forward to that!

No word yet on any actual LEGO Portal sets, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was more than just the one level pack we’ve already seen in the Dimensions lineup. Fingers crossed.

  • New LEGO Dimensions Trailer Features Doc Brown

New LEGO Dimensions Trailer Features Doc Brown

A new trailer for LEGO Dimensions has come out, and with it some new product announcements.

The trailer features Christopher Lloyd reprising his role as Dr. Emmett Brown. The trailer is heavy with Back To The Future gameplay showing the early beginnings of the famous clock tower of Hill Valley. You also get a sneak peek at some other characters in the game ranging from Lord of the Rings, Aquaman, Batman, and more.

How serious are WB and LEGO about Dimensions? They are bring-back-Christopher-Lloyd-to-reprise-his-role-as-Doc-Brown serious.

This is going to be big.

    And expensive.

Listed below are images of the new dimensions packs recently revealed. My wallet honestly can’t deal.

LEGO’s War on our Wallets escalates with new Dimensions Images

Well, that escalated quickly. Everyone analyzed the various shadows in the Dimensions reveal and guessed it was Portal and Doctor Who and who knows what else… but apparently someone screwed up and put the instructions up and they were noticed over on Brickset.

The Jurassic World set is especially exciting, since the Chris Pratt figure, since he’s only available in overpriced sets (which I suppose describes the entire line). But, let’s not kid ourselves, this is the pack that will sucker so many of us into this game:

I am saddened by the lack of a cake, but a Turret and Companion Cube tiles and Chell and K-9 and the modern doctor I care for the least… SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

There’s also a a Simpsons set with Homer and what I assume is a Buzz Cola can (because let’s face it, that’d be both inapprops and awesome). Marty and a Hoverboard we already knew about, but still cool to see.

We also get images for the rest of the initial lineup, including a bunch of Ninjago, Chima, and Simpsons. Also the Wicked Witch of the West, because why not?

  • LEGO Enters Toys To Life Arena With LEGO Dimensions

LEGO Enters Toys To Life Arena With LEGO Dimensions

First there was Activision’s Skylanders. Then Disney came out with Infinity. Nintendo wanted in and came up with amiibo. And now, LEGO wants a piece of the action with LEGO Dimensions. Or maybe it was Warner Bros Interactive. They’ve partnered together and came up Dimensions as a way to enter the market. And they are entering it in a way similar to Disney Infinity where different themes and universes can be crossed over for a unique gaming experience. The initial starter pack consists of Gandalf, Wyldstyle, and Batman and comes with a mini Batmobile and the interactive base where you build a Stargate-looking portal. It will retail for $99 and will be released on September 29.

There will be, of course, expansion packs. Level packs will consist of one character, two vehicles, and one level and will retail for about $29.99. The first Level pack will be Back to the Future. Team packs will consist of two minifigures and two vehicles and will retail for $29.99. The first Team pack is Ninjago. And finally, Fun packs will have one character and one vehicle. The initial wave of Fun packs consists of:

    • Lord of the Rings: Gollum
    • Lord of the Rings: Gimli
    • Lord of the Rings: Legolas
    • Ninjago: Nya
    • Ninjago: Jay
    • Ninjago: Zane
    • Lego Movie: Emmet
    • Lego Movie: Benny
    • Lego Movie: Bad Cop
    • Lego Movie: Unikitty
    • DC: Wonder Woman
    • DC: Cyborg
    • Wizard of Oz: Wicked Witch of the West

Toys’R’Us has listed pre-orders for the starter packs already on their website. It appears that the game will be available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and Nintendo Wii U. Sorry, gamers on the go, we’re out of luck.

If you watched the video above and read that list of Fun packs, you’ll notice that The Wizard of Oz is present in the game. This could of course be the main reason why the Wizard of Oz Ideas project never came to be. Another way to look at the Wizard of Oz is what it means in terms of possibilities of expansion packs. Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings are already licenses that LEGO has owned and possibily still own. And with Warner Bros. Interactive behind the game engine and having a sister company as a major Hollywood studio, it opens the door to more movie collaborations where a license doesn’t already exist. Possibilities abound.

The fine folks over at Hoth Bricks got a hold of official images and the press release of all of the initial wave of sets, including an oh-so-charming mini Delorean Time Machine. So go check them.

Thanks to Mos Eisley for the heads up.
