Despite the indescribable madness surrounding the LEGO booth at this year’s Comic Con, there was one shining aspect of their booth besides the retail space, eight shining aspects to be exact: their display cases. Ever since I can remember, LEGO has been putting display cases in their booth showing off their current product line from select themes. The glass cases were tall with one or two sets on each shelf. This year however, things were a little different. There were a total of eight large cases, and inside each case was huge diorama showcasing a particular theme. I thought this was a great way to display the currently available products as it shows what can be possible when you put everything together. The presentation looked much nicer and more cohesive than just sets on a shelf. I tip my hat to whoever designed these displays. It was one of the few things I enjoyed at the booth.
4184 Black Pearl On Display
One of the biggest let downs in the Pirates of the Caribbean line is 4184 Black Pearl. It wasn’t shown at this year’s Toy Fair event with only a placeholder image shown in the catalog, instantly generating hype and excitement. It wasn’t until recently when some European online stores uploaded the clean images to their site that we caught a glimpse of the ship. And all the feelings of hype and excitement vanished and were replaced with disappointment and hatred. The ship made an appearance at Comic Con, displayed inside the POTC case. I have to say, seeing it in person did nothing to assuage my initial disappointment. It only comes with two cannons for crying out loud. Are cannons that expensive that a ship can’t be outfitted with a complete set, one for each porthole?

There was one display case that didn’t showcase a particular LEGO theme. It was a fan display of a castle-themed scene set up by Legoland model designers Mark Larson and Steve DeCraemer LEGO had contacted some time ago to contribute to the booth’s display and it was simply awesome.
Fan Display
Other than the eight display cases, there was one (maybe two…) tall glass case(s) in front of the retail spot showcasing some of LEGOLAND’s attractions. There was a shelf of a small Star Wars Miniland diorama of Tatooine.
