LEGO.com Offering Double VIP Points Ahead of Across-The-Board Price Increases in August

For two days only, LEGO.com is offering double VIP points on all LEGO purchases. And since they’ll be raising prices on just about everything they sell, now would be a great time to stock up. The price increase will mostly scale with the price tag, mostly. But some sets will see a shocking increase of 25%! The price changes will take effect in August.

But again, since LEGO is offering Double VIP points today and tomorrow only, it might not be a bad idea to get things right now. Consider it a sale price before the price changes take effect.

Here are some sets with the current cost along with their new price tag:

Again, this is just a sampling. ALL PRICES ARE GOING UP STARTING IN AUGUST. There isn’t a lot of time between now and then. This might be the last promotion before the price hike so if you were waiting for a GWP, it may not happen. I’m sorry if I sound alarmist, but this expensive hobby is going to become even way more expensive very soon.

And it is absolutely NOT a coincidence that this Double VIP promotion is happening at the same time as Prime Day.

  • LEGO Might Offer Official Lighting Kits

LEGO Might Offer Official Lighting Kits

At LEGO World in Copenhagen, The LEGO Group unveiled a new series of official lighting kits and calling it “Night Mode”. Five kits in all were shown off tailor-made for 71043 Hogwarts Castle, 10260 Downtown Diner, 21318 Tree House, 10265 Ford Mustang and 41374 Andrea’s Pool Party. These were previewed to gauge reaction and possible demand but given the pricing it would be a hard sell. Brickset is reporting 1449DKK (approx £160 or about $200 USD) for the Hogwarts Castle set and the Tree House kit as priced at 649DKK (approx £70 or about $90 USD).

They are bat-ess CRAZY to consider charging that much. Given the prevalence of lighting kits from third-party vendors all over Amazon and eBay, LEGO’s entry to the lighting market comes a bit late. The only saving grace to that they are officially branded a LEGO item, and because of that, integration into an existing model might be better. But at those prices they are a tough sell. Similar kits for 71043 Hogwarts Castle on Amazon run from $89-$140. Buying the castle and the Night Mode kit together, assuming the exchange rates are true, you’re looking at $600.

LEGO’s offered lighting before but they were expensive and clunky. Seems they are staying true to their roots by keeping it expensive.

I like the idea of Night Mode, and it might be worth getting on some of the more expensive display pieces that would never be broken down into parts. The Mustang in particular looks pretty neat. But the cost, man, the cost! That’s a lot of dough for an already expensive hobby. Still, despite that I am curious how the integration will be, what one gets in a kit, if it’s battery operated or if it can be plugged into an outlet.

  • LEGO Reveals Gigantic Microscale Hogwarts Castle

LEGO Reveals Gigantic Microscale Hogwarts Castle

The title may seem oxymoronic, but I assure you it’s all true. LEGO revealed 71043 Hogwarts Castle today. It is gigantic as it is the second largest set ever produced with 6,020 pieces, edging out the Taj Mahal re-release by about 100 pieces. It comes second to the 7,541-piece UCS Falcon. 71043 Hogwarts Castle is the entire castle in microscale size and with it comes four exclusive minifigs and 27 exclusive microscale figs. And the price? Just a whopping $399.99 USD. Quite the bargain if you ask me. I mean, you can try and cobble one together with all of the regular System-scale sets over the next couple of years. Or try and MOC one up yourself using pieces from your own collection and a healthy stream of Bricklink orders. Or you can snap this up and be done with it. I know which way I’m going.

    71043 Hogwarts Castle

71043 Hogwarts Castle can be purchased starting on September 1st, 2018. There is a spot on the August store calendar for VIP Early Access to a new set. I’m going to guess it’s for this one.

    All Of The Pictures

LEGO even took the set to the WB Studios in London for a photoshoot with what I assume to be the miniature scale model used in the movies:
