  • Taking AIM At MODOK

    LEGO MODOK and AIM Agents

SPARKART!, creator of the greatest LEGO R2-D2 I’ve ever seen, has taken it upon himself to supply some much needed mayhem to the Superhero theme with M.O.D.O.K (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing). The addition of a group of expendable A.I.M scientists makes great use of the LEGO HAZMAT suit. Most importantly, minifig Captain America will now have someone to throw his mighty shield at!

  • Assembling The Avengers

After my rant even handed address about the need for LEGO maxifigures the other day comes along two examples of opportunities for TLG to step up. Firstly, Jared “Kaminoan” Burks AKA The Fine Clonier brings his creative flair to the infamous Hank Pym and creates Giant Man and Ant Man in three different scales. Utilizing official LEGO products he’s managed to prove a great point about the ease of simply increasing the size of the standard minifig shape to better create a sense of scale. The only thing missing is a large scale 20″ Giant Man which would put him in near perfect comic book proportions with a minifigure. He says it was the look of the new Hulk figure that got the ball rolling and I’d have to agree that the Giant Man he created would be a great scale for old jade jaws.

But could they do the Hulk justice with an upsizing and a print job?

It appears customizer CHRISTO‘s got that part covered. Excelsior.

  • War Machine For Your Viewing Pleasure

Following up his Iron Man custom, Kaminoan shows us his version of War Machine. Sweet stuff. They both need to be lit up to complete the effect. Though, I’m not sure if lighting up hand repulsors would be humanly possible.

  • THIS Is How You Do Iron Man

We don’t feature a lot of custom minifigs on the front page of FBTB because….. well to be honest, I don’t know why. But, given the LEGO Superheroes license announced last month and after seeing the above, I couldn’t help but share. Jared “Kaminoan” Burks of FineClonier fame was commissioned to do the above set of figures. And in case you were wondering, no, they are not for sale.

A tough act to follow, LEGO is going to have a hard time making anything look as good.

  • MOC Spotlight: Look Out! Here Comes The Spider-man.

The announcement of LEGO’s upcoming Superheroes line has already started some builders creative juices flowing and I for one am as excited for the oncoming storm of MOC’s as I am for the official sets, maybe more so!

This outstanding Spider-man vs. Sandman creation from Xenomurphy is a prime example of what I hope is to come. The build is top notch and the comic cover presentation is a real eye catcher. With any luck, TLC is paying attention and will come up with some equally inventive sets with cool play features. If not, it will be up to the builders to use this opportunity to keep making more dynamite creations as Xenomurphy has already committed to doing. I’m going to hold you to it XM!

  • Superheroes Community Window at Costa Mesa

LEGO Brand Retail Costa Mesa Community Window - 1

Paul Lee, LEGO Ambassador for LUGOLA and all around good guy, set the theme for the Costa Mesa LEGO Brand Retail store for the next few weeks: Superheroes of Marvel and DC Comics. The display featured some large scale figs of famous superheroes from both brands, though DC Comics had a slightly larger presence. SandLUG member Matt Armstrong (monsterbrick), Mariann Asanuma (Model Gal) along with LUGOLA members Ezra (B. Ezra), Paul Lee (polywen), and myself helped fill out the display with miniland scale superheroes, miniature models, m-wings, and other items all to promote next year’s Superheroes license.

You can get a close up of Ezra’s contributions in his photostream.

  • With Great Licensing Comes Great Responsibility

With the Comic Con announcement of the licensing of Marvel and DC there was a collective nerdgasm with LEGO and comic fans alike. There is so much potential with this it boggles the mind. Not only is there a positively vast library of reference material in the form of comic books, comic book movies are hot these days. It’s really too bad this didn’t happen a bit earlier because with this summer’s offering of Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America a lot of people (including myself) feel it was a bit of a missed opportunity.

  • Marvel and DC Comics Constraction Sets

Batman Constraction - LEGO Super Heroes - DC Comics

As part of the Hero Factory line, LEGO will be releasing a series of Constraction sets based on a few key Marvel and DC Comics characters. On display at Comic Con were The Hulk and Iron Man from Marvel Comics, and Batman and Green Lantern from DC. No other info available at this time unless I missed something. Anyways, I’ll see what else I can dig up.

I was under the impression that the LEGO booth would have some of the actual DC Comics and/or Marvel Comics sets on display. Unfortunately, that was not the case. They did have what appeared to be near-final prototypes of DC Comics minifigs of Batman, Catwoman, Joker, Wonder Woman, and Poison Ivy. Marvel Comics minifigs were represented by Thor, Iron Man, Wolverine, The Hulk, and Captain America, but those were in various early prototype stages. I didn’t realize until I finally got back to my room and downloaded the images how they actually looked, so I’m going to try and take some better pics tomorrow. Until then, enjoy.
