Amazon’s 20% or More off Sale on LEGO Star Wars

Amazon’s running some kind of wacky sale. I hesitated reporting on this sale because a) it’s only 20% and b) I usually find out about it only for it to revert to a higher price before I hit the publish button. Some of these deals seem to be sticking around though.

Save 20+% on 9496, 9499, 9500, 9516

Update 11:06am PST: Amazon has 9516 Jabba’s Palace marked down to $86.77.

Right now, Amazon has a pretty respectable discount on a handful of sets, all of at least 20%. If you caught 75005 Rancor Pit on the cheap last week, you can now pick up 9516 Jabba’s Palace for 23% off, $92.44.

Since 75020 Jabba’s Sail Barge has been confirmed for an fall release, you should pick up 9496 Desert Skiff and complete the the Tatooine scenes from Return of the Jedi. It’s still 32% off at $16.97.

The last two sets on sale are from Episode I and Expanded Universe. The Bongo Sub set, 9499 Gungan Sub, is discounted 21%, down to $55.03. 9500 Sith Fury-class Interceptor is also 21% off, down to $70.97.

And finally, even though it’s only 10% off, it’s still a good deal and was sold out during the holidays. Amazon has restocked on 10188 Death Star, charging you $358 even.

Amazon Discounts Some Stuff

Don’t like the new stuff? Still need to catch up? Looking for the old stuff on discount? Well this post is for you as Amazon has put some of the current wave of sets as well as some long-in-the-tooth exclusives on the discount rack. I’m kind of not surprised at the discounts we’re seeing for some of the current sets. With all the new themes and sets coming in, they’ve gotta make room somehow. Today, we’re seeing a few discounts that are worth mentioning, assuming, of course, that you didn’t break the bank/max out the credit cards/incite the wrath of your significant other already.

Amazon Discounts LEGO Star Wars 20%

It was bound to happen and it finally did. Amazon is price matching Target’s 20% off of LEGO Star Wars sale.

Looking for older sets? Those are on sale too:

That’s all I could find. Oddly enough, none of the battle packs or the planet series are seeing the same discount.

Review: 9499 Gungan Sub

The second half releases for Star Wars served to remind AFOLs of a few things. First, it’s that LEGO has absolutely no regard for us and our wallets. Second, that Star Wars Episode I exists, now in 3D, and it featured a lot of terrible, terrible things. For those of you that have blocked Episode I out of your brains (and I can’t blame you for that), the Gungan Sub was from a completely forgettable middle section where a Young Ed Bloom and Ra’s al Ghul visit the Snorks and have to borrow a car in order to get Jar-Jar to the prom to make sure that his dad punches the bully and rescues his mom through a series of imaginative stories and flashbacks. I’m pretty sure I’m remembering that right, but those blocks I put in place for Episode I were very, very strong.

The new Gungan sub presents something kind of unique for me… a set that’s a rehash that I never picked up (the only other set with that distinction is the original Gunship… anything else I’ve got the original, the rehash, and sometimes the rehash of the rehash). It’s not that I had any more disdain for it than for the other Episode I sets… I was just a poor college student.

When it came down to the choice between LEGO or beer, the Gungan sub could not inspire sobriety like the X-Wing could. And back then, the sub was just a $25 set, so how does the new one stack up at almost triple the price and less than a hundred more pieces? $50 set… so how does the new one stack up at 50% more and less than a hundred new pieces

[Edit: Thanks to forum member ytjedi for pointing out that the brickpedia entry for the price was incorrect... like I said, I didn't buy it, so never knew]

LEGO Toy Fair 2012: Star Wars

Toy Fair 2012 - Star Wars - 9499 Gungan Sub - 08

I’ve started the upload process for our photos taken at the LEGO Collector Event this morning here in New York.k It’s slow going, and our connection is a little iffy, but we’ll do our best to make sure everything makes it onto the FBTB flickr stream.

Up right now is the Star Wars theme. We’ll be uploading the licensed themes first, then the rest afterwards. So take a peek and let us know what you think.

UK Toy Fair 2012 – Star Wars News

UK Toy Fair 2012 - Star Wars

Today, I had the privilege of attending the UK Toy Fair 2012, at Olympia in London.  Pictures of the inside of the Lego stand were strictly forbidden, so you’ll have to make do with a few snaps from the outside.  I can, however, share information about what I saw … and let me tell you, the summer wave of Star Wars sets are AWESOME!

Series 2 of the Planet Sets

First up, we had 9677 X-Wing Starrighter & Yavin 4 … which seemed almost identical to the X-Wing we got in the 30051 polybag, although the nose uses a Slope 45 2 x 1 with 2/3 Cutout piece.

Then I saw 9678 Twin-Pod Cloud Car & Bespin … which is orange, not red, like we may have expected.  The Lobot figure features new printing on the head and torso.

And finally, we have 9679 AT-ST & Endor … which is a new build and once again features the printed flag piece showing the detail of the cockpit, like we last saw in set 4486.

All were listed for an August release at the same price as Series 1.

I was then swiftly moved on to the other sets which are set to be released in the summer, starting with …

9515 The Malevolence … this is definitely not minifig scale, before anyone asks.  It’s pretty sturdy though and features a carry handle for easy swooshing.  There were stickers on the body to represent all the little rooms of the ship, which helped with the scale.  The weapon on the side features a rotating wheel and a flick fire mechanism.  The figures all seem recylced, apart from Padme Amidala, which looked new to me.

9497 Republic Striker-class Starfighter … not a ship I am overly familiar with and it’s main play feature was it’s movable wings that can move 90 degrees, from beside the cockpit to sticking out like “normal” wings.  All new figures, including a square bodied droid (T7-01).  Not one that I am gonna bother with, personally.

9498 Saesee Tiin’s Jedi Starfighter … is similar to previous starfighters, although with a new cockpit design.  It did seem a bit sturdier in the main body and featured a new droid from what I recall.  The new fig for Even Piell feature a new head mould that looked pretty cool.

9500 Sith Fury-class Interceptor … I have no idea what this ship is (not really into Expanded Universe) so it was a bit of a mystery to me.  It’s wings have moving parts at the back.  The figs were certainly unique and pretty cool looking.  The Sith Troopers had helmets that looked like forerunners / afterrunners to Darth’s helmet .. a bit like the development of the Clone helmet over it’s phases.

Again, all launched in August.  I didn’t have time to note the prices as I was pretty quick in looking at these as both myself and the person showing me around wanted to get to the following 3 sets …

9499 Gungan Sub … the sub itself is a vast improvement on the previous version, with a more rounded look.  The best part though … Queen Amidala.  This figure is quite simply stunning.  It’s EVERYTHING we’ve wanted.  She’s in her red outfit, and comes with a custom moulded skirt piece, white head and headpiece.  Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jar Jar Binks feature too … not sure if these are any different, I was too busy drooling over the Amidala figure.  You will buy this set for that figure alone.

9496 Desert Skiff … a beefed up version of previous incarnations of this set, featuring new minifig versions of Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett.  If you thought the last Boba Fett fig we got was good … this is even better, with leg printing certainly, as possibly arm prints too.  A different coloured cape as well.  We also get Kit Haba, although he just looked like a Clone Wars pirate to me.  The Sarlaac was new too.

9516 Jabba’s Palace … now, this set was a real beauty.  For those expecting to get Jabba’s entire palace, you’re gonna be disappointed, but the important parts are here.  The throne room, with moving platform covering a “pit” (which is big enough for a fig to lay down in, but no more) is well constructed with plenty of play features … you can easily recreate the death of Oola into the pit of doom!  The tall element which you may have seen in the prelim pics has a rendition of the Palace doors (which can slam open and closed), complete with the pop out eye, which uses a printed 1×1 round tile.   With all that aside, the real reason you’ll want to buy this set is the minifigures.  The new Jabba is stunning, in a lighter colour than before, fully printed and in two parts so you can articulate at the torso (does Jabba have a torso?!).  Bib Fortuna looked all new to me, Salacious Crumb is a custom moulded & prnted figure and is just perfect.  Leia in Boushh disguies is awesome … just as you’d expect, with her grenade again represented with a 1×1 round tile.  The Gamorean Guard is also new, with a new headpiece and printed detail.  Oola is along the lines of Aayla Secura, although in lime green, obviously.  For this one, I noted the price … it’s a hefty £119.99, but defintely worth it for the figs alone.

9509 Advent Calendar … features another raft of nicely made micro ships, mostly Eps 1 to 3 and features 2 exclusive figures … Darth Maul in a Santa outfit and R2 Snowman, with carrots on his body and a top hat!

All out in August, expect the Advent Calendar which is due in September.

I also saw the Hoth Board Game, which looked great … although the rules sounded complicated.  You’ll buy it for the microfigs, which, despite being really small are instantly recognisable.
