Review: 30130 MINI Black Pearl

30130 MINI The Black Pearl

There isn’t much to this review so I won’t bother with the more link.

30130 MINI Black Pearl is a Target-exclusive in the US and is only available pre-packaged with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D Blu-ray Limited Edition 5-disc set. In the UK, they were given away earlier this year as a Sun newspaper promotion. Free is about the right price for this set. By itself, it’s a terrible representation of the iconic pirate ship. Since I am not a big Pirates fan nor do I have a 3D television, the only reason I bought it was to do this review and hopefully save a few of you readers out there from making a terrible purchase.

Target-exclusive Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D Blu-ray Limited Edition 5-disc set

What I liked: Nothing. Since technically it’s ‘free’, it’s a neat little bonus to get some extra LEGO bits

What I didn’t: It’s a terrible model. It’s obvious just by looking at the sails how inaccurate the model is. Adding a few more plates and clips and a longer bar for the center could have easily remedied the inadequate number of sails. The MINI model also has an inverted brown cone which I believe is supposed to represent a Crow’s Nest which the Black Pearl doesn’t even have. A 1×1 clip plate could have replaced it and represent the flag. And the bow of the ship? Hideous. I mean, who the heck is designing this thing and what are they basing it off of?

Verdict: Save your $30 bucks and put it towards the System scale 4184 The Black Pearl. Unless you’re a hardcore Pirates fan that has a 3D home theater system and doesn’t mind ugly LEGO sets, you’re better off spending your money on something else.

Review: 4184 The Black Pearl

4184 Black Pearl Review - beauty

When the first wave of POTC sets came out in May there was a gaping hole in the collection. While the Queen Anne’s Revenge was a pretty cool ship, where was the Black Pearl, Captain Jack Sparrow’s beloved ship?! Well that gaping hole has finally been filled with the arrival of 4184 The Black Pearl. I took some time last weekend to build the Pearl with my ten year old son Connor. This review is from two perspectives: The jaded, overly critical analysis of a long time LEGO enthusiast, and mine.

[USA] TRU Bricktober Week 3 Brings Free Battlepacks

The Toys R Us Bricktober event rolls onward with the Retro Knight Minifigure Magnet available with any $20 LEGO purchase and they’ve discounted a few choice sets with at least two worth checking out:

Free glued magnet, a couple of discounted sets and free shipping on orders over $75 not enough for you? My, how jaded you’ve become. How about a free Star Wars Battle pack when you spend a scant $40? So drop your cash and take your pick. Selection may vary in store.

Thanks to ufjason for the heads up!

4184 Black Pearl More Widely Available

In all the excitement of the 2012 pictures, this one pretty much flew under the radar. But in addition to 4184 Black Pearl being available at Target stores, Amazon.com (linked above) also has this set for sale. Priced at $99.97, you get free shipping and no tax to most states. LEGO Shop@Home also has this in their inventory for $99.99. You pay for shipping, but since October is double VIP points, you’ll get 199 points credited to your account. There is also a report of this set showing up at Costco at a discounted price of $79.99. Lots of buying options if you’re hankering for the ship from the first movie which also happens to be the best Pirates movie.

PotC Represented At Steam

This gigantic Pirates of the Caribbean mosaic made an appearance at Steam: The Great Western LEGO Show held in Swindon UK. You can head over to TBB and check out the recap posted by guest reviewer JasBrick. I find it interesting that some folks from the UK still managed to make it to Brickcon last weekend despite an event taking place in their own backyard. I really must check out Brickcon one day, but Steam definitely wins for the better name in my book.

4184 Black Pearl Now Available?

4184 Black Pearl

Forum member doodlebird posted news that he was able to obtain a copy of 4184 Black Pearl from his local Target store. Go to the customer service desk and inquire about the set with the DPCI number 204 00 0522. Ask kindly if they can retrieve it from the back, if they don’t have it they’ll be able to look up the inventory level for other stores in the area. Price is $99.99. I’m going to try my luck a bit later. Happy hunting!

Jack Sparrow Minifigure Alarm Clock

Continuing with their minifigure-styled clocks, LEGO introduces a new character in the line up: Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s available for pre-order over at Firebox. According to this Eurobricks post, Amazon.ca lists a Barbossa clock as well, but no pictures of said item are on the site.

On a side note, I saw the Ninjago minifigure clock at K-mart the other day, flaming sword accessory and all. Amazon lists him for $24.99.
