A Controversial Question for the Community

With the recent brief reprisal of everyone’s favorite hot button issue [what?], it was suggested by a member to start a poll to actually gauge the community’s approval rating of the controversial business of aftermarket reselling of sets and figures for a profit. Seems like reasonably good idea to me, so here we are!

This poll is open to active forum members, so stop by and cast your vote. I’ve included a few common points for and against the practice that’s some good food for thought.

Poll: Pick the next site theme!

We’ve just started a poll here in the forum for your pick for the next FBTB site theme and banner. Will it be another memorable scene from the expansive Star Wars saga, or will we visit that pineapple under the sea? Check out all your choices and cast your vote now!

Forum Topic of the Moment

Have you missed me? I’ve certainly missed all of you. I’ve been on the forum and site a lot less since starting work for Legoland, so I only get to peruse the topics late at night or on the weekends.

This thread caught my eye, and I thought I’d highlight it to generate more conversation.

Why do some MOC topics get comments and others don’t? Lack of a picture in the post? Is it the name of the topic, or the name of the creation itself? Is it the builder? Don Solo has some suggestions if you’re a frustrated builder not getting the attention you seek. Chime in, I’m looking forward to even more enlightening discussion on the forum.

My own thoughts: Like anyone, my circumstances and attitude have changed over time. Years ago when I started on FBTB, I was a builder who rarely stepped foot outside the MOC forum. I responded to creations as I hoped/expected others would to mine. But ever since becoming an admin on the site (and before my new job,) I had to do my best to read every topic in every forum. I saw all the creations. But because I was so busy doing my rounds of the forum (troublemakers to attend to!) I didn’t have much time to respond. I’m viewing, but not posting, as many people seem to be doing.

So why do I think other people respond to some models and not others? I don’t think it has anything to do with the general quality of the models lately, or for any one single particular reason. As Turk’s post put it, this site and forum has become more a place for product and theme discussion rather than model discussion. This isn’t a bad thing, just something that happened over time as member and staff focus has shifted.

Is this something we need to work on? Do you miss seeing models on the main page? Do you care either way? Let’s talk.

May The Fourth Be With You 10th Anniversary Celebration

LEGO Star Wars isn’t the only game in town celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary. FBTB was born the same year the LEGO Star Wars products hit the streets. We’ve had a couple of rough spots over the course of our history, but I can say with confidence that the current state of affairs ever since the relaunch, which I affectionately refer to as FBTB 3.0, has never been better. Part of that is due to the awesome staff I have working with me on the site. And a HUGE part of that is our community. In order to celebrate, I’ve cooked up a very special giveaway as a way of saying thanks.

Final Lap

OK Bothans, the race is back on and the competitors are headed out on the track. The ranks are mixed up as they leave the chaotic pit lane, some got hit harder than others… but no one was immune. The more damage dealt, the farther back they start the final lap. Curious how the high and low ends of the rankings were the biggest targets, and that classy iPod Racer ended up as the most loathed by a single vote over the Desert Nomad. Meanwhile the G-pod, Exo Racer and Unspod had the lightest attacks… maybe these sleepers from the center of the pack are going to burst through to the front to take the win!

Here is the voting lineup for the final lap (but NOT the current rankings!):

First Lap Recap

The race is going strong and the pods just completed the first lap…  Four of the more stylish pods are leading the pack, followed by an unlikely pirate racer that held it’s position while the rest jostled around him. The fierce looking Spearit made the biggest jump in the ranks, up 21 positions (and from the looks of it I’d guess he was ramming entries out of his way). The quad-engine pod made the second biggest advance seen in the first lap – maybe the risky configuration will pay off in the end! Rounding out the top eight is the crazy crossover Sparrow… no word on if Patsy managed to keep up.

We were negligent in getting this news up here, but the mass of emails we’ve received have prompted me to post.

Registrations on the forum are closed for the duration of the Podracer Contest voting. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the cheaters among us have necessitated this action.

The forums should be reopened in a few days upon the conclusion of the contest.
