Review: 76081 The Milano vs. The Abilisk

Have you ever been putting together a set, something that you know the look and feel of outside of LEGO form, and hit a point where you know that the build is just wrong? When I started the build before reviewing 76081 The Milano vs. The Abilisk, I hit that point on page 27, when I clicked on the two dish winglet things and realized that the ship was far tinier in the build looked on the box… and it looked awful on the box. Of course, as bad as that was, when you snap the first wing into place on page 34, you realize that wrong doesn’t even begin to describe what’s wrong with this set. If you don’t remember snapping that on the first time, don’t worry, you’ll have to do it again when it falls off later, and then several more times after that when it continues to do so.

There are a few things going for the set at the outset, mostly that it’s 460 pieces only run us $49.99. Beyond that, it includes all of the Guardians except Rocket, and it does get the color of the ship right, and that was a big miss of the original. After that, though… I’d be pretty hard pressed to come up with a lot of good based on my first impressions. Honestly, that was only made worse after I watched the movie. I will discuss some spoilery aspects of the movie in this review, because we love talking about things in a movie that’s long since come out in theaters and video.

Ultimately, the scariest thing about this set is that it might be even worse than it looks, and, outside of the color, it looks just terrible.

    Review: 75098 Assault on Hoth

I’m sorry, LEGO, but your latest set, 75098 Assault on Hoth, is a lemon.

When this set was first announced, the following image floated around the internet soon after:

I kinda glanced at it noting the similarities that were being drawn between 75098 and the multitude of sets that it drew material from. I wanted to give LEGO the benefit of the doubt, that they wouldn’t try and sell us what appeared to be the mother of all rehashes. But that is exactly what they did.

Review: Batman v Superman – Dawn of Justice

It’s no secret that I wasn’t a fan of Man of Steel. I didn’t like the sets, I thought they mishandled the whole “origin story” of Superman (and, you know, his basic character traits), and the action was just absurd and excessive. Worse, they just absolutely ruined Jonathan Kent and the moral fiber of Superman / Clark Kent. There were some decent parts… I liked Adams as Lois Lane and Fishburne as Perry White, and the whole military fight that let Detective Stabler get the noble death SVU would never give him was far cooler than the generic build-up for it.

But, I didn’t really hate Man of Steel, I just didn’t like it. We’ve had some genuinely great comic book movies in recent years, and MoS went more for gritty and serious, and didn’t treat it’s characters like they were, you know, comic book characters. Obviously, some people loved the movie though, because here we are with Batman v Superman. DC has already announced that this is all a lead-up to Justice League, and has been teasing stuff for every film they’re planning to make ever, and they’re all going to be the bestest things ever.

The problem, of course, is that Batman v Superman is like if the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones had an illegitimate child and decided to take home the afterbirth and dress it up like Superman. Batman v Superman is the worst movie I have seen in years.

Oh, and obviously, spoilers. Though likely no more than their trailers already spoiled.
