[NYCC] Bionicle Day Wrap Up

NYCC_Bionicle_36

Day 1 of the New York Comic Con has come to a close. And while I was unable to attend this year, Mos Eisley was going to be there so I tasked him to writing up a report. And here is what he came back with.

[NYCC] Another Exclusive Bionicle Tahu Mask

IMG_6405

If you weren’t lucky enough to go to the Flat Iron event earlier tonight, you still have a chance to get the exclusive Tahu mask over at the LEGO booth. There are a total of 1,500 of these bad boys and they’re giving away a few hundred a day. Just pop on over to the booth as early as you can to try and secure one. This one looks exactly the same as the one given away at the Flat Iron event, but with a different cardboard backing to differentiate between the two.

In addition to today’s invitation-only Bionicle panel at New York Comic Con, LEGO held a special after-hours event at it’s newest Brand Retail location at the Flat Iron Building. And if you were lucky enough to get on the list, you walked away with the above exclusive Bionicle mask. Individually numbered, only 100 were given away.

We’ll have more pictures and a write up from today’s events later on so stay tuned.

[NYCC] LEGO To Announce New Theme at New York Comic Con

nycc-logo-hi-res

BZPower announced yesterday that they were invited to a special event held by LEGO at New York Comic Con which is happening on Thursday October 9 through Sunday October 12. On Thursday October 9, LEGO will be holding a special panel where a new theme will be announced and would like as many AFOLs to be present as possible. To help facilitate this, LEGO and BZPower are teaming up to give away twelve Thursday passes to attend NYCC. All of the instructions are up on BZPower. You must be able to attend should you win obviously. My guess is that this will be the official announcement of the return of Bionicle.

[NYCC] Exclusives

A lot to chew on from this year’s NYCC LEGO booth. We got two new exclusive TMNT minifigures and a new collectible Star Wars tin set.

Honestly I was extremely disappointed that there were two exclusive Ninja Turtles minifigures for NYCC after SDCC had four awesome super hero minifigs earlier this year. Rather than a short cycling line to pick up minifigures, they used a raffle system for the black Ninja Turtle with an awesome NYCC-stickered skateboard. (more…)

I’ve been attending New York Comic Con since 2009. This year was my first time as an exhibitor, which was a completely new experience. I am a member of I LUG NY, the New York tri-state area LEGO User Group. A few months ago, LEGO community relations manager Jim Foulds approached us with the opportunity to create a fan display for the convention. We were asked to have Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and Lord of the Rings represented. A LUG member each took charge of a theme, and we worked in teams over many weeks to build a display. We adopted the MILS standard of building to produce a modular display that could be rearranged depending on what area dimensions we had to fill. It worked out great, and we are all really proud of the result.

[NYCC] LEGO Batman 2 The Movie

Lego Batman 2 The Movie

IGN is reporting that a surprise trailer was screened at a pane’ at NYCC. The panel was for the sequel to the animated feature, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (which will be out next year) but the audience was treated to a preview of the LEGO Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes United.

The kid-friendly CG-animated toon sees the Joker and Lex Luthor team-up to take Gotham City apart “brick by brick,” which leads to Batman and Robin to join forces with Superman to stop them. The Justice League (specifically, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg, and Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern) appear in the movie, as do supervillains such as Penguin, Two-Face, Riddler, and Harley Quinn. Commissioner Gordon is also in the mix.

[NYCC] LEGO Previews 76001 The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase

76001_prod

This set will be unveiled at the 2012 New York Comic Con either on Thursday October 11 or Saturday October 13. Rick “GIR3691″ Theoroux will be there to shoot pictures and provide a first hand impression of the set.

My first impression? The Tumbler is tiny and makes the one from 7888 The Tumbler: Joker’s Ice Cream Surprise look like the crown jewels. The stickers used for the details actually make it look worse. The Bat is actually more impressive than I had thought but the way the ‘arms’ are built, with the exposed turbines along with the cannons, just screams laziness. It looks like something I would build, and that’s not saying a whole lot. I’m not crazy about all the blue; it reminds me of the original TIE Fighter set. Arms and blueness aside, I actually like the way it looks and can’t wait to build it.

I have no frame of reference from this set but I imagine it’s based on the cartoon like 6873 Spider-Man’s Doc Ock Ambush set is. At least now we know what set Doctor Doom comes in.
