Piece count?

Does anyone know of a good site where you can find precise piece counts for all LEGO sets? The LEGO site has some but for obvious reasons doesn't include sets that are now out dated. Just wondering if there was one and if so what it was

You can use:
bricklink.com
In their 'catalog' you can search by a setnumber and you will see all the parts + colors + amount (even the extra ones).
If wanted you can also buy them on this site.
Or:

One thing to be aware of though, is that bricklink's piece count does not include the minifigs, so they are less than the numbers on LEGO's website. Peeron's piece counts do include the minifigs and are the same piece counts as the ones on LEGO's website/boxes.

I highly recommend that you read the "Educate Yourself" portion of this post. Lots of info there if you're just getting into the hobby.

The best place for "official" piece counts these days is probably BrickSet. Both Peeron and LUGNET have set databases, but they're not terribly up to date. BrickLink as stated has piece counts, but it's derived from BrickLink inventories rather than based on the "official" piece count. So what BrickLink considers to be a "piece" and what LEGO considers to be a "piece" may be different things.
