Star Wars Advent Calendar 2012 – Day 22

Day 4 - Star Destroyer
Day 22 – Sith Infiltrator

I don’t even think this can pass for chibi. This micro is a perfect example of LEGO not knowing when to say no. Some models don’t translate well into LEGO and some can be pulled of in a fairly reasonable resemblance, like the previous Infiltrators. The key to pulling off ships like this is plates, as few as possible to try and replicate the shape while keeping it slender and as in proportion as possible. Or, you can just stick a few blocks together in the right basic shape call in a Sith Infiltrator and laugh it up because we’ll buy whatever you throw at us.

Amazon Presells 75004 Z-95 Headhunter

Amazon has finally posted a listing for 75004 Z-95 Headhunter. Asking price is $49.99 and will be released on December 31 just like all the other 2013 sets. Still no sign of the MHC yet, which I’m dying to get my hands on.

Also, if you haven’t bought/ordered 75005 Rancor Pit, Amazon has it on a slight discount at $56.95, 6% off.

Is it presells or pre-sells? I can never tell. Same with pre-orders and preorders. Which is the correct way?

Wall Street Journal Talks About LEGO with No One from LEGO

When the above video was linked to me, I watched it with the expectation that I would actually learn something about LEGO and their working relationship with their licensors and, like the headline says, why LEGO is so expensive. Maybe that was my fatal flaw, having an expectation. But instead, I learned that having two people from the Wall Street Journal talk about LEGO without anyone from LEGO there can expose how inaccurate their facts are. For instance, LEGO’s set designers operate out of Denmark, and not Norway. And the headline? The headline says, “Why Are Legos So Expensive?” The video doesn’t exactly detail why it’s so expensive but maybe the published article they allude to explains it a bit better. Oh, and also, it’s LEGO not Legos. I’m not one of those grammar nazis that correct people all the time when they use the term Legos. I honestly don’t care and don’t expect the average joe to know the difference but from a news publication such as the Wall Street Journal, you’d think they’d know or at least have someone at LEGO briefly proof the copy for inaccuracies before going to set or publishing the article.

I don’t know why I’m nerdraging about the video. I realize they’re not LEGO nerds like we are, but still…

Star Wars Advent Calendar 2012 – Day 21

Day 21 - Super Battle Droid
Day 21 – Super Battle Droid

Honestly, I’ll take a regular battle droid over a so-called super battle droid any day of the week. Why? The parts of course, as I find them much more useful in building and I like it when the main body comes in a solid colour other then tan. That being said, this is a fine generic figure and makes a nice addition to your droid army should you be so inclined to build one. There was something else I meant to mention today too, now what was that…
I can’t remember. Meh, it’s not like it’s the end of the world or anything.

Star Wars Advent Calendar 2012 – Day 20

Day 20 - General Grievous Starfighter

I don’t know why, but I’ve always liked this prequel ship and this micro captures it very well in a soullessly charicaturish sort of way. It’s difficult to focus on reviewing this little guy, what with the awesome announcement of a Back to the Future set this morning and the impending doom that awaits us at the stroke of midnight tonight (PST obviously). I’m going to assume that since LEGO now has a time machine, they’ve already seen that everything’s going to be ok and that’s why they couldn’t wait to tell us the good news. Since the other option is that they know the world is going to end anyway, so they can make this announcement and by the time Universal has their legal team mobilized it’ll be to late, I’m choosing optimism/sanity.

If this is the end (and it’s not… hopefully), I’d just like to say that while I thought Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy were really good films, it was one of the worst depictions of Batman ever So long and thanks for all the fish Rosebud was the name of Charles Foster Kane’s childhood sled I honestly don’t regret buying this calendar… but I wish I’d gotten it on sale.

The Hobbit Sets Discounted 25%

Both Amazon and Walmart have discounted The Hobbit sets they have in stock by about 25%. No Bag-end though. Having new sets go on sale with such a generous discount this early in their release cycle doesn’t bode well, but I chalk it up to the holiday rush along with hype for the movie and movie-related merch. Links below are for Amazon, Walmart’s list here:

LEGO CUUSOO Announces 21103 Back to the Future Time Machine

I woke up late today. Anyways, LEGO CUUSOO posted their announcement video about an hour ago and the newest CUUSOO product will be 21103 Back to the Future Time Machine. No on-sale date or other item details have been released. I expect that information to come out sometime in January. The builders behind the project have decided to donate the 1% royalty they would have gained to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. How awesome is that?

My mind is officially blown. And you thought the Minecraft set was hard to get…

Bringing Bag End To Life Video

LEGO published a new video earlier today on their YouTube channel documenting the building of the life-sized Bag-end we reported on earlier this week. The video gives some great details on the model, such as the scale of the building and the larger scale of the minifigs, and the building process behind it. I swear, if I don’t get to see this in person at some point next year I’m going to be a sad panda.

FBTB Announces

Heartlake Friends

Today, on the one year anniversary of LEGO Friends, I’m proud to officially announce the launch of a new blog: Heartlake Friends. The goal of Heartlake Friends is to take an unbiased position to look past the noise of any perceived controversy and celebrate all the positive aspects and outcomes from LEGO Friends. Me being an adult male, I’m not exactly the target audience for the line, so this is where my wife steps in. She’ll be managing the content and together with our three year old daughter, we hope to make a compelling blog that you’ll want to visit and maybe even share with us your thoughts and stories on your experiences with LEGO Friends.

The site has been in soft launch mode for a couple of days now while we work out the kinks and get things set up but today seemed to be the perfect day to make the announcement. And to celebrate the official launch, Heartlake Friends is having a giveaway! There are three chances to win some really cool prizes:

  • Giveaway #1: Register on the Heartlake Friends site AND post a comment on the 1 year anniversary post. One registered user will be selected at random as the winner. The prize? 1 copy of 3185 Summer Riding Camp (MSRP $99.99).
  • Giveaway #2: Like us on Facebook. One liker will be selected at random as the winner. The prize? 1 copy of 3315 Olivia’s House (MSRP $69.99).
  • Giveaway #3: Follow us on Twitter. One follower will be selected at random as the winner. The prize? 1 copy of 3189 Heartlake Stables (MSRP $49.99).

You can enter all three giveaways but you can win only once. The deadline to enter all three giveaways is 11:59pm PST December 31, 2012. Winners will be announced in early January and will be contacted by either email, facebook message, or twitter direct message.

We hope you like what you see and visit Heartlake Friends often!
