So another year, and mostly the same format: Ace handling Star Wars, Eric looking at Harry Potter, and in a shocking turn of events, Nick not having to deal with a Marvel calendar dedicated to causing physical pain – he’ll be handling City this year because while his kids may be into Minecraft he decidedly is not (and also that thing was impossible to find in his area). As always, there will be some extra special bonuses, a lot of cheeky writing, tons of typos and things we miss that someone will demand we go and hire an editor to fix.
We will not do that.
Ace (Star Wars) – 5 Hit / 18 Misses
Eric (Harry Potter) – 14 Hits / 6 Misses / 1 Harry Potter / 1 Totally Neutral
Nick (City) – 18 Hits / 5 Misses
Nick (Star Wars) – 5 Hits / 18 Misses
Ace (Star Wars)
Here it is, Snowman BB-8. The cream of the crop of every calendar is always reserved for the last day and this year it did not disappoint. There is no better character from the Star Wars universe that lends itself to being winterized. BB-8 is the perfect shape to be recreated as a snowman. They could have just had the two pieces that make him and call it day, but they also threw in a top hat befitting of a man made from snow. They could have stopped there but they also included a very small and effect micro Christmas tree. If LEGO could add a few more bricks to make the day just a little more of a satisfying mini build like they did today, there is no excuse why they couldn’t do the same for Day 1 and Day whatever the day was where we got that one single-use mould droid. An absolute winner.
Eric (Harry Potter)
I always see the last day of these advent calendars as the final hurrah. No matter how bad an advent calendar is (and I have seen some bad ones), is the final day is good, that can redeem it. So how’s Day 24?
Pretty damn good. I am a biggggggg fan of translucent elements, and I’ve never seen those curved slopes in a transparent color before, so I’m a happy camper. Wonderful way to round out a pretty good advent calendar. One of the best in years!
Nick (City and Stuff)
There was never any suspense on what was going to be day 24. While I haven’t reviewed them here, I have purchased the City advent calendar probably every year they’ve made them for at least the past decade or so. Last year brought us a new print for Santa, which has only appeared in the calendar and a handful of Christmas-themed sets that show up in special displays at LEGO stores or Target. He’s Santa. Come on, I’m not so heartless I’d ever give a thumbs down for Santa. Give me some credit.
Does the best day of the calendar on a last day make up for what is the worst Star Wars calendar ever made? Of course not. Does snowman BB-8 evoke joy, along with his little tree? Absolutely. I want an inflatable snow-BB to put in my front yard display now. This is Texas, if I wait for snow to make one of my own, I’ll be waiting forever.
The last day was a foil version of one of the others. I kind of wish I had another version of the calendar so I would know if it was a random one, or if it was always a foil version of the somewhat lame unicorn flakes.
