  • Funimation Will Send You An Akira 4k HDR Disc Replacement For Free

Funimation Will Send You An Akira 4k HDR Disc Replacement For Free

I’ve been looking forward to watching Akira in all its 4k glory since I found out about it over three months ago. Like any middle-aged man who buys himself his own presents, I wrapped it and put it under the tree to pretend that Santa brought me something. Well, I unwrapped it but never got around to watching it with kids and trying to spend time with them and all that. My friend sent me this link a day or two after Christmas day. Apparently, when it came time to manufacture the limited edition 4k Akira set, Funimation only included an SDR version. But they are making things right for people who bought this set by providing, for free, an HDR version. All you need to do is send them an email with a copy of the receipt and they will send you the disc starting in February. Don’t have a receipt? You’ll need to mail in your Blu-ray disc from the set to get it. You can read all about it in the Funimation news post.

I still haven’t watched my copy. I can wait a couple more months for HDR.

Akira 4k / Blu-Ray Limited Edition Set Up For Pre-order

This is one movie I don’t mind re-buying with each new format. Amazon has this listed for $43.49 right now. I don’t have a 4k player yet but this will be the first 4k movie I pop into the optical drive of my PS5. Can’t wait!

  • Batman Ninja Looks Good

    Batman Ninja Looks Good

Call me crazy, but this looks good. Warner Bros. does a lot of direct-to-DVD Batman feature animation releases. Batman Ninja is no exception except this time, for the first time, they adopted an anime style and boy does it just work. They even concocted a story around how Batman ended up in feudal Japan. It looks delish!

Batman Ninja will be available digitally on April 24, 2018. The physical releases which includes Steelbook, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD will be in stores on May 8, 2018. Now I’m hoping Warner Bros. will go the distance and include a Japanese language track with English subtitles as part of the packaged release. I can’t imagine them not doing that, as that is how a lot of anime fans watch anime.

  • Trailer For Alita: Battle Angel

    Trailer For Alita: Battle Angel

Okay, I realize this is 100% completely off the beaten path beyond LEGO, beyond the occasional video game stuff I wanted to blog about, but I can’t help myself. The trailer for Alita: Battle Angel dropped last week and I gotta say, I’m still interested, weird eyes and all. I guess that’s a good sign. Maybe watching Disney Princess movies with their big ol’ peepers got me used to them. It’s been in development limbo for awhile now, with James Cameron holding onto the film rights of the mange its based on before a script was developed and a director was found. Enter Robert Rodriguez of El Mariachi, the Spy Kids franchise, and Sin City fame.

For those of you who have no idea what the heck you just watched, it’s an English/live-action adaptation of Battle Angel. Battle Angel was a two-part anime that was based on the manga Battle Angel Alita published in the early ’90’s. The manga is, however, seeing a revival with deluxe hardcovers of the series being released over the next few months. You can order volumes 1 right now and pre-order volumes 2 and 3 for delivery in February and March 2018, respectively. Volumes 4-9 will be out later next year. The anime adaptation hasn’t seen an HD remaster, but you can still find the DVD on Amazon marketplace.

After the Alita: Battle Angel trailer dropped, I went and rewatched the anime a few nights ago and it still remains as one of my all time favorites. Film adaptations and remakes targeted for the Western market typically don’t do well, like, AT ALL, so saying that my expectations were really low is an understatement. After watching the trailer though, I’m not completely turned off. Kind of excited I guess, enough to want to post about it at least.

You can watch both OVAs below, hotlinked from YouTube or pick up the DVD from Amazon.

Alita: Battle Angel is pegged for a theatrical release on July 20, 2018.

Thanks for indulging. We’ll return to posting about LEGO in the morning.
