So another year, and mostly the same format: Ace handling Star Wars, Eric looking at Harry Potter, and in a shocking turn of events, Nick not having to deal with a Marvel calendar dedicated to causing physical pain – he’ll be handling City this year because while his kids may be into Minecraft he decidedly is not (and also that thing was impossible to find in his area). As always, there will be some extra special bonuses, a lot of cheeky writing, tons of typos and things we miss that someone will demand we go and hire an editor to fix.
We will not do that.
Ace (Star Wars) – 3 Hit / 4 Misses
Eric (Harry Potter) – 3 Hits / 2 Misses / 1 Harry Potter
Nick (City) – 6 Hits / 1 Miss
Nick (Star Wars) – 1 Hit / 6 Misses
Ace – Star Wars
I just can’t. I mean, what the heck is this thing? Coruscant traffic light? Death Star mailbox? Tattooine moisture vaporator of some kind? I mean I’m guessing it’s some kind of droid maybe? The top half looks like those buzz saw droids that tried to take apart Anakin’s and Obi-wan’s Jedi Starfighter from that terrible movie, Revenge of the Sith. The bottom half? I can’t even. I’m editing this post ahead of Nick so I can’t scroll down and cheat but really, there’s no point. This thing is just a pile of parts that have no business being put together and offered as a build. Just an utter waste.
Eric – Harry Potter
This is a hippogriff, which is different from the mythical griffin, I guess? I adore this build, and it’s a really cute creature. The use of the textured 1×2 brick for it’s chest is really inspired – it looks so good!
Nick – City
Before we get into the calendar, I read Eric’s comment above, and now have to suggest he go watch Delicious in Dungeon. Which is about as silly as it sounds, but was far more entertaining than you’d think. There’s a whole episode that goes over the difference between a Griffon and a Hippogriff.
This is not really a micro-build, it’s like a little dozer plow. It’s cute and well done, but it made me think of how impractical something like this would be where I live (Texas)… I mean, for the 1 or 2 days a year we may have snow, you’d be like a god. But for the other 363 days, this dozer attachment is something you’re tripping over in your garage. Still, great build and a hit.
Unlike Ace, I got that this was a Buzz Droid right away. Why it’s got a marital aid strapped to its head, I have no idea, and honestly, it’s just ugly and feels kind of half-assed. Which, I mean, would be better than most of this calendar, but it’s not like Buzz Droids were a parts dense thing in the couple of sets we’ve had with them in it. They’ve never really been done justice in LEGO form, and they still haven’t. Miss.
I know eventually this calendar is going to let me down, but today is not that day. It came with a tiny little ticket just to give another pun! I’m not actually a huge fan of popcorn, with the exception of the mix of cheddar and caramel corn (which is strange, because not that into them as separate things). Typically I only get it at the movies and let my kids go wild. If by myself, I won’t bother. But if it was this cute (or cheap), I’d think about it.
