So another year, and mostly the same format: Ace handling Star Wars, Eric looking at Harry Potter, and in a shocking turn of events, Nick not having to deal with a Marvel calendar dedicated to causing physical pain – he’ll be handling City this year because while his kids may be into Minecraft he decidedly is not (and also that thing was impossible to find in his area). As always, there will be some extra special bonuses, a lot of cheeky writing, tons of typos and things we miss that someone will demand we go and hire an editor to fix.
We will not do that.
Star Wars has continued to disappoint, with neither Ace nor Nick liking the blob of parts that made up the work bench.
Ace (Star Wars) – 0 Hit / 2 Misses
Eric (Harry Potter) – 1 Hit / 0 Misses / 1 Harry Potter
Nick (City) – 2 Hits / 0 Misses
Nick (Star Wars) – 0 Hits / 2 Misses
Ace – Star Wars
Well I guess this kinda makes up for the craptastic start we had. This here C-3PO is unique to this set and, I had to look this up, comes from the scene in Rise of Skywalker where his programming was overridden by Baby Frock, hence the red eyes. If you have any other C-3PO you can swap heads and have the printed arms, legs and toes version that looks more normal and didn’t come from a stupid movie. I like the fact that this figure is unique (even though it’s really just the red eyes head), can stand on its own, and is something you actually put together. It checks all the boxes so a thumbs up for today.
Eric – Harry Potter
It’s a letter!
It’s only nine pieces, and it’s immediately clear, so this is a great lesson in LEGO brevity. My only suggestion would be to use a 2×6 tile horizontally instead of three 2×3 tiles so you don’t have those vertical lines, but I’ll be the first to admit that’s very nitpicky.
Nick – City
Well, our first miss of the city calendar. I mean, by itself, not really much wrong, but it feels like it could have gone with one of the dress up kids. The table is just lackluster, especially compared to how some of the other tables have been. Could have done something to holiday up a bit to improve it, but it is still better than…
… just getting C-3PO all by himself. Especially with that terrible new silver printing on his leg. I’m sure this has been out for awhile, but I’ve only bought a handful of Star Wars sets in the past… decade or so. Not holiday, but yeah in the droid theme. But still, meh, so I’m going to stick with a miss here too.
The puns go hard in the mini brands calendar, and everyone should Juice Be Yourself. Unless yourself sucks, then probably be someone else. But we know that’s not true. The straw on this is a nice little touch, and it even feels like holding a tiny juice box.
