Somewhat ironically, I've brick built those before with a couple of long one-by-something technic bricks and a two-by-something plate but the 1x2s are still a real pain to get apart most of the time - not impossible, just a real hassle that's usually time consuming. I do need to get a real brick separator, though, thanks for the link. Like I said, I wasn't really serious about actually wanting that piece, but when I'm in the process of taking two 1x2s apart, its usually a different story.

Personally I never use a brick seperator. I have always left my thumbnails long enough to get under any brick. My first brick seperator came with the Mini Modulars.
