Official Announcement: 10223 Kingdoms Joust

10223_prod

I think this is going to be announced today at Brickcon. No one seems to want either deny or confirm this, but the keynote is still a few hours away, so we'll see. But I got an email today from LEGO Shop@Hame regarding a Shop@Exclusive for 2012: 10223 Kingdoms Joust. Quick stats: US $119.99 / CA $149.99 / DE 119.99 € / UK 99.99 £ / DK 1099.00 DKK / AU 199.99 AUD; 1,575 pieces; available starting January 2012 directly through LEGO Shop@Home and LEGO Brand Retail. A ton of pictures below followed by the official press release. A bit of letdown, but that might be because I'm in a rush. I'll post my initial impressions after the keynote.

Great set...I like the inclusion of the Falcon knight to mix things up a bit and include some Classic homage. This is pretty much a non-issue, but I'm a little put off by the "Combine 2 Kingdoms Joust sets for a scene fit for a King! " comment. Why not buy 4 and make a scene fit or an Emperor?

when i first saw the set list on that dutch toy site, i was pretty excited for this. i was imagining a grand stand, royal viewing tents, food stand, maybe an armorer, and of course, knights jousting. what we end up getting is a gate for some reason that has no place for a jousting scene, but i guess the designers needed to make it look castle-y to entice you to buy it. they could have gotten rid of that to put in all the other stuff that would have made sense. plus, after looking at it in person, it just doesn't feel like it has 1500 pieces.

Combine 2 Kingdoms Joust sets for a scene fit for King!

yeah, this is a complete joke. why stop at 2? they should have said, "Combine 4 Kingdoms Joust sets to make an arena!"

side thought: they should make a minifigure peasant pack.

i should be thankful that this set sucks so much; i can put that money towards the other exclusives.

Now, back home, I look at my 6060 Knight's Challenge, and like that much, much more than this new set...
Besides, i still wonder why it disappeared so very quickly during the keynote. Would have loved to have a closer look at it.

As castle is my 2nd favorite theme, very excited about this set, though not without a few nitpicks. As for the positives:
1) The modular connections design (just as good an idea now as back in black falcons days, love that aspect of the current king's castle)
2) Minifigs, specifically The black knight, with black falcon-esque shield design, and new green dressed woman
3) The stonework brick-build of the towers, especially the angled parts and snot work, along with the tower interiors
4) Another Kingdoms set, awesome, love the theme

Now I wouldn't be an internet critic with nothing but praises, but here are a few details that bother me:
1) The dark green plume and 2nd tent, why not dark navy blue? I'm definitely changing that, whether it be bricklink or plundering some crownies
2) The back is quite flat and open, they could use some stairs or something
3) Those tents are pretty lame
4) A joust tournament with only two competitors? I was anticipating a couple more knights while the set was only rumors, but I guess most castle fans will have lots of knights for additional jousting participants

Overall looks great

Just looking at the pictures, I'm surprised that this set isn't getting a little more praise. For $120 you seem to be getting a nicely built castle gateway and a decent amount of figs. Lego seems to be trying to bridge the gap between the Medieval Market Village and a standard castle--both AFOLS and kids. Rather than going full UCS like the $300 chess set of a few years ago, they split the difference. My guess is that it will sell fairly well.

Obviously, it would be cool to see what an official $400 Castle built by Lego would look like. But for $120...not too shabby. I was patient with the MMV and eventually got it from Amazon for $80. Hopefully I will be able to do the same with this one.

Compared to the jousting set I played with as a kid, I for one think this is a pretty cool set. Plus it has ten times the pieces.

I just noticed that! That's a huge touch-back to a well-loved piece of Lego castle history. Bravo for Lego!

Makes me want to dig out my Black Falcon's Fortress XD

This does look like a nice set. I have noticed one funny (to me at least) thing. If anyone has ever been to Medieval Times before, you would notice (hopefully) that there is one guy that has a really crappy job. He walks around with a large scoop/rake and bucket picking up the filthy bits left behind; mostly after a 'scene' is played out. This set must pay homage to that poor soul whom ended up with the short straw.

I too hope this isn't a Lego exclusive...Amazon saved me a few bucks on my MMV as well.

It's listed as an exclusive so far. It might get opened up later.

I'm trying to snag another MMV now as well as a Mill Attack set. Definately keepers.

I agree with onions. I was looking forward to a grand stand, bigger tents, food vendor, all that. That said, this still looks like a good set... it just didn't quite hit that sweet spot.
