For those of you who may have missed out on the original UCS R2-D2 set, LEGO is remaking it into a newer, slightly different but hopefully way better version, 75308 R2-D2. This new iteration costs $199.99 USD / €199.99 EUR / £179.99 GBP and comes with 2,314 pieces. It costs $50 more than the original 10225 R2-D2 released nine years ago, but comes with almost 200 more pieces and after inflation, you’re probably getting a better deal. I can’t say for sure though because I wasn’t an economics major, but that’s what it feels like.
Just from a quick glance, this isn’t just merely a re-release. The construction technique is different from the bottom up giving it a smoother rounder body and the head construction uses a completely different approach. Also, it looks like there are more moving parts and hidden features. I can’t wait to get my hands on one personally.
This set will be released on May 1, 2021 just in time for the the annual unofficial Star Wars shopping holiday, May the 4th. Shop@Home will have a free promo set as usual to go with this beauty. More details to come.
