Having learned from the last contest to read these rule clarifications early on...

What about a theme for which LEGO has acknowledged they have the license, but for which the sets haven't been unveiled? I'm thinking of Pirates of the Carribean, which was confirmed after Comic-Con...

Contest entry

Postby sparkart » Sun Oct 17, 2010 7:46 pm

Here's my CubeDude Vignette contest entry:

Image

More pics here.

This vignette depicts the "Lock the door, Artoo" scene, with the droids on one side of a locked door, and a pair of Imperial troops on the other side of the door.

MacLane's wild-wide-eyed 3PO made me LOL, I really liked it, but modified his original design a bit. My first vignette idea was to show Imperial Stormtroopers blasting 3PO into pieces, so I put a big round target on his belly that evokes a similar detail on the reel-life costume. I thought R2 looked cuter with a big eye, so I gave him one as big as 3PO's.

I particularly like the way the Stormtrooper blasters turned out. To me, they look like an oversized super-deformed version of the weapon, and still include detail like the scope, front sights, and ribbed barrel. I thought it was important to recreate the creepy skull-look of the Stormtrooper helmet with large eye-sockets and the grim frown.

Hope you like it and thanks for looking!

Here is my entry for the contest.
Making Star Wars CubeDudes again, I wanted something more obscure to have some fun with.
In my mind "cute" and "ugly" here begs to be made as CubeDudes. :)

Dang, awesome entry, MacLane -- I was counting on you already having enough of your own CubeDude sets and not being motivated to enter...

I don't know about this. I don't really know if Angus should be allowed to make an entry for this. I mean, I greatly appreciate his work, I just don't think it's very fair for the creator to enter in the competition.

To be clear, I'm not opposed to him entering at all. No shame in losing this contest to the creator of CubeDudes, and if he gets beaten somehow, that'll be pretty epic for whoever wins. I just thought the prize would probably just be loose parts to him; it might mean a great deal more to someone else.

Yes, okay. He should be able to enter, but I don't think he should be able to win the prizes. I mean, he must have some of each.

This.

Who's to say his is the best anyway? Not to belittle anyone's entry, but Larry Lars has (as usual) created a freakin' awesome cubedude vig, and Steamworks has an epic cubedude rancor with Malakili the rancor keeper. Both are sweet entries repin' Jabba's Palace, and are certainly (and least in my mind's eye) great contenders to Angus's (also awesome) entry.

Really, complaining about someone entering a contest because they have an unfair creativity/skill advantage just sounds like poor sportsmanship.

I don't think anyone's complaining, just expressing an opinion on an unusual and (as far as I know) unprecedented development in a contest. I don't know how it's going to play out, but there's nothing in the rules about it, so don't expect anything official on the matter.

If it weren't for him, we woludn't have CubeDudes to make a contest about.

Great entries so far, mine is nearly done. Not SW, though!

Oh, and please clarify for a non-native English speaker without computer skills:
"No graphical enhancements allowed on the submission image."
Am I allowed to use "Auto Colour", "Auto Levels" and "Auto Contrast" in Photoshop? I guess the rule says "don't put your vig pic on top of a Naboo backdrop pic", but I wouldn't like to be disqualified for a technicality.
Brick me!
