DK Publishing to Break World Record with Star Wars Mosaic

Postby Staff » Thu Oct 07, 2010 10:45 am

DK Mosaic

To celebrate the launch of their latest Brickmaster books, from Saturday October 23 through Monday October 25, DK Publishing will be hosting a free event at Shoreditch Town Hall, London and attempt to break the Guinness World Record of the largest LEGO mosaic ever assembled. Pictured above, the dimensions of the mosaic will be 16 meters x 7 meters comprised of 1,500 baseplates and 384,000 LEGO bricks. They say bricks but I'm pretty sure they mean plates. In any case, you can attend this free event by registering on the DK site. Registered attendees will also be included in a drawing for a 4 tickets to LEGOLand Windsor. You can read all the details and register at the DK website.

You can preorder the LEGO Brickmaster: Star Wars books from Amazon (use this link if you're in the UK). US street date is scheduled for October 18

...Why are Anakin, Padme, and young Obi-Wan in the center of the mosaic?

This is part of why the prequels annoy me so.

I'm thinking its a picture time line.

If the mosaic is the same build style as the one at Star Wars Celebration V then I'm pretty sure they mean bricks. 1x1 Bricks are assembled by participants on a color printed 6x6 plate which is then tapped into the appropriate numbered space in the mural.

In doing the math of "1500 baseplates", in this case, it probably is all plates Ace... kinda like how we did it at C4. At C5 and a lot of other recent events we've been creating our "mystery murals" out of brick for a couple of reasons.

1. The color palette is greater in brick v. plate creating more options.
2. Bricks are easier to handle for our target demographic, the ones that are actually putting together the mural for us. (child labor laws be damned)
3. It makes correcting any mistakes the kids make simpler to correct (you try pulling off and replacing 1000's of 1x1 plates per day)

I'm guessing that this event will be a demonstration event vs. a participatory one that the public can actually work on. i'm not sure who's spearheading this one and I'm also not sure it'll be a record setter.

Here are some pics from the first day:

It seems they have been too busy to update their blog since...

EDIT: DK have now updated their blog (and completed the mosaic).

i'm surprised they used 2x2s for each "pixel". 1x1's would have given a much finer resolution and better image.

That would have required at least 4x the amount of time to assemble the picture.
