ArMek Wingtip AGI Ion Cannon Assembly. An economical answer to a thriving government the E-Wing was initially produced as a patrol vehicle for the district surrounds of Coruscant and later re equipped to suit short range sorties on the growing pirate threat.
Fast and terrestrially agile with a full compliment of sensors within the unhoused array that was centrally mounted on the ships fore, they were a perfect policing craft.
The pilots 'pod' was detachable and capable of atmospheric transfer should the need arise as was the droid section able to separate and be flown using the smaller Vector Correction outlets on a return to ship basis.
With a relatively cheap core structure and low shield capacity the E-Wings main cost came from the outfitting of the various weapons configurations. As it's intended use was of a non militaristic nature the wing mounts needed considerable strengthening to support the added mass and recoil of an Ion Generator.
Even so this did not put the craft at odds for it's class when converted for different roles and even afforded large squadrons that could attack on mass giving the illusion of a greater threat.
Because of the success of the E-Wing several other models were designed specifically for battle but not put into production, except for the somewhat cumbersome H-60 Tempest bomber which saw limited action during the final years of the Republic.
These designs were later resurected for the Shantipole Project and included the B-Wing and B-Wing/E Starfighters.
Due to its modular nature many retired E-Wings found their way into the hands of scrap merchants and sold off to the general populace as parts, of particular note was the wings easy conversion into Ion Security Turrets.
