2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

So, opening ceremonies are tonight. Who here is going to be watching the events unfold? Which events appeal to the you most? Hockey, Figure Skating, Skiing, Snowboarding, or Curling (or something else)?

Are there any particular athletes you care about?

I myself haven't been paying that close of attention, but might try to watch some skiing, snowboarding, and hockey. Heck, if I'm bored enough, I may watch some curling.

I'm not into the Olympics, though I'm not here to bash them or crap on the thread. I may watch the opening ceremonies, though I'm sure something will come up with the kids and I won't be able to.

I like to watch a couple of minutes of Ski Jump, and I like half-pipe snowboarding, though I doubt I'll have time to see any of those events. Luge is also pretty cool. Mostly, though, when the Olympics come around, I get bummed that most of my shows go on hiatus, though I'm glad Lost isn't.

I'll have to see the luge. With a few crashes including a death, looks like someone built a speed death trap.

Don't get me wrong, it was a great idea. The execution? Not so much.

I certainly hope there isn't a repeat incident of the tragic accident earlier today...I feel awful for the Georgian team and the athlete's family/friends.

There is a time difference of 9 hours between there and here, so I guess I will not be able to watch that much as I would love to.

The Canadian hockey team crushed the Norvegian team last night 8-0. Norway only shot 15 times on Luongo, who probably didn't even break a sweat in the last two periods. Good start for the American team too.

As for the luge accident, I think it's tragic and shouldn't be made fun of. I also think that we shouldn't try to put the blame on anyone. Like the old saying says : Bantha-poodoo happens. You have a guy going 140 km per hour on a tiny sled, with only an helmet for protection. There's a level of danger involved, and accidents can happen. It's not the engineers fault, it's not the Games committee's fault, and it's not the fault of the Georgian athlete. It's just bad luck. Really bad luck.

I'm totally into it and watch as much as I can. Whit the time difference, the events start at 6 PM and goes on all night. In Sweden, we're happy for our two golds so far but are also a bit upset at the many mess-ups, apart from the tragic luge accident (well, they should have coverd the pillars feet away from the last corner in the world's fastest track) a lot of things has happened.

I'm impressed by Vonn (injured, my foot!), too bad our Anja crashed so close to the silver.

See you in the hockey finals, Canada! (In the men's finals, that is...) Oh, and the curling as well!

Sorry Skafte, but I don't think Sweden will be able to repeat it's latest Olympic upset in men's hockey. I think the gold will either go to the U.S. (good overall team, and Miller is quite the goal tender), Russia (because of their tremendous offensive capability) or Canada (Crosby with Nash and Inginla will be pretty hard to stop I think).

Vonn is the perfect poster girl for the Americans in these Olympics. Cute, intelligent, well raised... and now a gold medalist! But I think she was just luckier than the others because the track looked horrible! Seriously, I like the games so far, but Vancouver has definetly not the climate to host winter games.

The only part of the Olympics that I have been paying any attention to is men's hockey. And that is mainly, because the Olympics have temporarily suspended the NHL season. Fun to watch what I presume to be Teemu Selanne's last Olympics.

And, even more exciting, Canada won 14 gold medals in total, which is a new record. The most gold medals won at a winter Olympics EVER! (Old record of 13 held by Norway and the Soviet Union). I think that qualifies as "Owning the Podium" thank you very much.

It was a fun game to watch but still won't get me interested in NHL....I'm sure hockey is very fun to play but watching others run around and score once or twice in 60 minutes while you're sitting on your a$$ isn't very exciting. It was a great game though....USA scoring with 24 seconds remaining to force overtime was a nice surprise.

Wow, great way to show what Canada is made of, poor sports. Seriously, bragging and trying to make yourself better defeats the entire purpose of the games.

I don't hear the US bragging all the other times we have beat all the other countries. There's a difference between being proud of something that happens, and just plain being rude, and what you did was plain rude.

Seriously, Canada has had a pretty bad dry spell in their big winnings, and they just won the most high-octane competition within the games this year. Cut him a bit of slack. Personally, I thought it was a great game and fun to watch--I just wish the American reporters got out of our poor goalie's face after the last goal was scored. The poor guy looked like he was gonna cry, and I don't blame him--I used to play goalie in soccer sometimes (it's usually never the goalie's fault, by the way). I wanted the U.S. to tie it up and go into overtime, but I was also kind of hoping that Canada would win this event. Did you see how happy the crowd was? That's real devotion, right there.

This was definitely a must win situation for Canada. Anything other than gold would have caused the media to persecute team Canada. Personally I was rooting for U.S., but overall I didn't care as much about the outcome of the gold medal game as much as I did about the bronze medal game. I'm glad Finland won the Bronze, as its a nice farewell present for Teemu Selanne.

Anyway, it was overall a good (hockey) Olympics for all the participants. Congratulations to Canada, the US and Finland as they all played well during the games. I must say that I'm still impressed by Slovkia's performance during the Oympics. They were up 3-1 in the third against Finland, however a defensive break down led to 3 goals in 4 minutes. That must of been heart breaking.


Also, have I mentioned yet that Miller was beast during the tournament?

I see that you are from Detroit. I seem to remember the Tigers knocking the Blue Jays out of the hunt for the baseball playoffs a while back, and I remember some of things those Detroit fans did and and said after they clinched a trip to the playoffs and sent Toronto home. Also, I seem to recall that Detroit has a hockey team, and a pretty good one at that. I also think that they won the Stanley cup a time or two. I also remember how their fans responded to that.

When your side wins, its ok to gloat, but when your side loses, the other fans are "rude" and "poor sports". Right.

I'm not trying to attack you, just set the record straight. Americans have a long history of sports dominance, (and well deserved) so when a tiny country like ours (your population is over ten times larger than ours) finally kicks some sarlacc and takes some names, we get a little excited.

I too don't think that Hatcher's comment was over the top (well, maybe the "In your face" comment was inappropriate).

Personally, I think that it's just normal to get excited and to gloat a little when your team (or your country) wins. Everybody does that, whether they're American, Canadian, Corean, Chinese, etc.

Being proud does not equal being a poor sport.

Look at it this way : at the next summer Olympics, you guys will be able to gloat all you want when your dream team in basketball kick our Canadian behinds...
