Review: 75052 Mos Eisley Cantina

75052 - Full Set

Ah, the Mos Eisley Cantina… a boil in the middle of a hive of scum and villainy. It’s notable for being the point in Episode IV where it really started to hit you just how… unique… the setting was going to be. Sure, the opening fight was incredible, but it was humans against humans. We liked Jawas, but they were in robes. Here though, we suddenly get dozens of different species, we get the murder of a bounty hunter (because HAN SHOT FIRST!), and we get to see just how cool a lightsaber can be.

Despite being so critical to the entire original trilogy… after all, this was the place that brought everyone together that would pretty much move through the rest of the films… it’s been basically ignored by LEGO. We’ve had exactly two sets that deal with the place, 2004’s absurdly overpriced Mos Eisley Cantina, and this year’s absurdly overpriced remake of the same name. Sure, we’ve gotten a couple of Landspeeders as well, but that’s about it. There are a bunch of similarities, outside of the size between the two sets: both have a Landspeeder with Luke and Obi-Wan, both have a Dewback and a Sandtrooper, and both have Han and Greedo.

At $40 more than the original, there is obviously a whole lot more to this set: 3 Bith, which fall into that “it’s about time” realm of minifigs, and a lot more parts. To be fair, I was excited when we saw the name first leaked, and then very let down when we finally saw this thing. It shows that LEGO knows exactly how to manipulate us AFOL fans with the inclusion of the Bith in the set, since I don’t think Greedo would have been enough by himself to get us to buy it by our first impressions alone. Of course, now that I’ve gotten it in hand, built it, and started reviewing it, the real question is does it line up to those impressions. And if so, what joke I am going to use to make fun of it?

LEGO’s Girl Problem

What it is is beautiful

When the recent Research Institute set came out, there were a lot of people that were really excited to see it, both because it was a decent idea and because it was a set that could be used for positive role-model toy for girls. There were some people that weren’t, a lot to just indifference, but some that just get angry when you say the word “girl” without also including some derogatory reference. I assume that those people are registering on the site right now, just to complain without ever reading another word. Sadly, those comments won’t be approved until after the contest voting has wrapped up.

I have a vested interest in this, because I have a two-year-old daughter. She loves stuffed animals, Duplo, and Tonka trucks. I have a closet of Lego sets put away for her, and in all of them there are four female minifigs (three are in the Research Institute). There are some mini-dolls in there because I have a few Friends sets in there too (the ones I didn’t part out for myself, because the part selection in Friends is fantastic).

The Ideas sets this year are a rare and welcome exception

The Ideas sets this year are a rare and welcome exception

Let me be very clear… I’m talking about the gender imbalance in LEGO sets. There are plenty of other things we could call out about LEGO… the lack of diversity, the problem with how certain ethnicities are portrayed (or not), the lack of handicap figures (which I find surprising primarially for much LEGO does to donate to hospitals where the “just like you” factor could make a big difference).  These are things that I think should be talked about too, but I’m only going to pick one fight at a time.

Leia and Lando

This was all the diversity there was in the original trilogy…

I’m also aware that the problem is much bigger than Lego. The idea of equality, especially gender equality, just unleashes a whole heap of stupid inside the nerd realm. Lego is part of that, which means it’s just a reflection of the bigger problem. Except Lego isn’t just a nerd property, and it isn’t just licensed sets. It’s a kids toy. I could write many, many articles about the problem with the entire girls toys vs. boys toys, or the problem with pinkifying to make something “girl friendly,” and I have posted stuff like that on the forums… but Lego is loved by girls and boys, and that’s where the problem is.

MOC Spotlight: Star Wars Planets Mobile

I’m super jealous flickr user goatman461‘s kid, who gets to enjoy this superad Star Wars Planets mobile every time he or she gets a diaper change.

You may have seen the Brickset listings for what looked to be a 2014 replacement for the Planets series.  Well, it’s not quite that, but it may be a nice chance to score some unique Star Wars figures on the cheap.  As a well documented lover of all things Rebel pilot, I’m very happy to see what appears to be Theron Nett, aka Red 10, and R2-X2 (or at least his dome).  Plus, you know…super cute!

LEGO Star Wars Games Headed to Mobile Devices

This bit of news is coming from our friends over at Jedi News. It seems that at the recent European Brand Licensing Show, were given a magazine with a page that outlined Disney’s plans for the next few years regarding their Star Wars property. You can take a look at the image for yourself or head on over to read the article, but in short, it seems that they want to breathe some new life in the LEGO Star Wars game library by releasing it on mobile devices, i.e. iOS and Android phones and tablets. The page has that initiative pegged at Spring/Summer of 2014, so we should be seeing some more news about it soon enough.

I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere about how many Bothans died to bring us these plans or something….. oh look there it is.

FBTB Draft 7: C-C-C-COMBO! Registration Opens Today

Registration opens at 4 pm PST TODAY for FBTB’s 7th online parts draft which will take place on Saturday October 20th at 10 am PST.

Click to see the Bricklink inventory for 7930 Bounty Hunter Assault Gunship and 7978 Angler Attack.

Still to be announced is how the figures will be split up (voice your opinion here) and how we’ll set the draft order.

10 participants will be drafting 20 sets total. The draft fee is $40, which covers the 50% off MSRP cost of the two sets, sales tax and ziplocks. All things being equal, you should receive an average of 589 parts for your money. There will be an additional nominal charge after the draft has been completed which will cover your exact shipping and packaging cost.

To register, post “C-C-C-COMBO!” in this topic at/after 4pm PST. The first nine responders will go into our Potential Participants pool, and everyone after that will go into a Standby List (not a bad place to be, the last few drafts considered!) Payment instructions will be sent out after we get 10 potentials.
