For those looking to score a PS5 on launch day, this Thursday November 12, Sony stated in a blog post late last week that there won’t be any available at retail locations. Some people may complain in that this may have been their only way to score a system, and that they have better luck at retail than online. But honestly, this is better for security reasons and human comfort reasons.
We’ve all heard horror stories about people getting mugged over their launch day purchase, be it a console or a pair of shoes, not to mention the potential for, at the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, disorderly conduct (think Black Friday). So the move to online only removes all of that out of the equation for both customers and retailers.
Sure, the big downside is that you’ll be going up against the internet to try and get one. But You won’t be freezing your tatas off in the wee hours in the hopes that the store you’re in line at has enough allocated. And, you can be disappointed in the comfort of your own home instead of in your car while questioning your life choices.
The only thing about this announcement though is that they don’t really give a go-live time. I guess that’s up to the individual retailers but man what is it with places not giving a specific time for these things? Anyways, these are the pages you might want to keep an eye on:
- Amazon: Digital | Optical
- Best Buy: Digital | Optical
- GameStop: Digital | Optical | Bundle
- Target: Digital | Optical
- Walmart: Optical
Some of those places have in-stock alert functions, where you can add your email and hope you get an email but that’s honestly the last thing you should rely on. Since the official launch day is Thursday, I’d start doing the refresh dance at 9pm Wednesday night to account for a midnight release on the east coast.
