  • Second Trailer For The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Whether you loved, liked or hated the first film, the second is charging towards theaters regardless and will arrive on December 13th. Take a look and see what you think about this second trailer for the second film in Jackson’s polarizing second Middle Earth trilogy, while I go have my second breakfast.

  • Review: 79010 The Goblin King Battle

One of the biggest problems I had with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, was that the violence in the movie was just dished out like any other action movie. This sat in definite contrast to the book itself, where violence was always with reluctance. And while who kills who in the this battle is fairly accurate, it all felt too aggressive from the good guy side. After all, they were sort of intruding there, and forced the issue. This is a whole lot less of a battle, and more of an escape / aggravated breaking and entering.

The Goblin King Battle is the biggest set from The Hobbit series thus far, and features said Goblin King (otherwise known as the Great Goblin, and never called a king), a few more of our dwarf company, and several goblins to push around. Like everything else from this particular theme, this is a playset, and designed as a place for you dwarves to run about while falling from distances that would kill pretty much anyone.

At first glance, this isn’t a set that really impresses when you first see it. The box is big, but sitting next to things like An Unexpected Gathering or the Lord of the Rings sets, Mines of Moria (same size and $20 less) or Battle of Helm’s Deep (much bigger and $20 more), it seems a bit puny. It’s really not, weighing in at 841 pieces, 8 minifigs, and $100. More than that, the three dwarves in the set are only available in this set.

So, does it stack up to the price tag, or should you look elsewhere for your minifigs?

I had the opportunity to take some more photos of the upcoming Hobbit set, 79013 Lake Town Chase. I must be either dead tired, or really not interested in the set cause I can’t think of anything else to say about it. Or maybe a combination of both?

  • [SDCC] How To Buy The Retail Exclusives

    Shut-up-and-take-my-money

Hopefully this info will help someone out as they are changing the process on how to purchase the two retail exclusives.

Last year, it was pretty much first come first serve. You get in line and wait for the booth to start selling the exclusives. It was a waste of time and not very efficient since they would wait about an hour and a half after the exhibit hall opens to start selling. This year they are handling things a little differently. They will be handing out tickets to the first few hundred people that show up on a first come first serve basis. Once you get a ticket, you are eligible to purchase any combination of up to two retail exclusives, the JEK-14 MINI Stealth Starfighter and/or Microscale Bag end. Only those who have a ticket may purchase the sets. There are a total of 1,000 of each set made, and they will be selling 200 each day including today, preview night. You must purchase your set(s) before 4:00pm else they will be for sale to the general public. The price for each set is $39.99.

On a side note, they are also selling the 21103 Back to the Future Time Machine set as an early bird sale exclusively at the LEGO booth here at San Diego Comic Con. Price is $34.99. The official worldwide release date is expected to be August 1.

  • [SDCC] LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Hobbit Retail Exclusives Revealed, BTTF For Sale

    sw hobbit

On sale starting today are not one but TWO retail exclusives that you can purchase only at the LEGO booth during the con.

The LEGO Star Wars exclusive is Jek-14 MINI Stealth Starfighter. Following cues from last year’s convention specials, the MINI Stealth Starfighter has a chibi aesthetic to it from its miniature form with its exposed cockpit and seated pilot lending to the exaggerated “head” size. The price for this set is $39.99 and will net you 105 pieces.

The Hobbit exclusive is Micro Scale Bag End. The set seems to include Bilbo Baggins in the same neat collectible packaging style as the Star Wars exclusive. The price for this set is also $39.99 and will get you 130 pieces.

We’ll be providing reviews as soon as we get our hands on the sets.

Also, the booth is selling the 21103 Back to the Future Time Machine set. This is not an exclusive, there is nothing special about this version. This is the same version you get if you were to buy it elsewhere. Price is $34.99
