Toy Fair Report 2015: LEGO Star Wars

Postby Staff » Sat Feb 14, 2015 6:51 am

Toy Fair 2015 coverage begins now, so let's get right to it!

The Star Wars sets seem to rest on the large side this year, with the rumoured UCS TIE Fighter leading the charge. Ace is still there shooting away and I'll try to get these uploaded and posted asap. The molded pieces on the constraction figures were still prototypes, but the pics of Luke's head at the end were the final product brought out at the end.

Personally, I'm looking forward to getting the Vader Constraction set and Bricklinking Sabine and the clear domed astromech from that big ugly carrier.

Cool, I hope the Star Wars Constraction series lasts long enough to get a Grievous in that scale. I actually liked the big 10186 Grievous. The pose was stiff, but if you could pose Grievous striding or crouching, it was a neat looking model, albeit not too robust or stable. I hope the LEGO designers can figure out a good-looking Grievous in this Constraction scale.

Yuck, I do not like the new Vader helmet. His face, though, is pretty cool.

The construction figures don't do anything for me. Haven't we been down this road before?

The carrier is a neat idea, with the microscale fighters.

And I may have to break my Star Wars embargo to get that Flash Speeder for all that green.

I have to agree with the new Vader helmet. I'm not a big fan. Again they're trying too hard for realism versus the lego look and it ends up looking too big for the figure. Though I do like the new face print. The UCS tie fighter is OK. Doesn't really stand out to me but the pilot with printed arms and legs with new helmet print looks fantastic. The Advent calendar is the best one yet. The micro builds are awesone.

Is the Vader helmet and faceplate separate pieces? Are the Luke head and hair separate pieces? Because I want to put Luke's head in Vader's helmet and recreate this scene, "...to make you think!"

I'm not completely sold on the UCS Tie for at two hundred. It doesn't have enough greebles!

Also, did we really need a new naboo starfighter and speeder right now?

But man!! That shuttle is pretty rad! Not a bad buy for some dingus that missed out on the UCS one. No, sir. Not I. :'(

I'm perplexed by the Naboo Starfighter and Speeder, too. I can see the emphasis on Return of the Jedi, to remind Joe and Jane public of the history of Star Wars on the eve of the next trilogy, but is it just Disney that's trying to push the prequels, or are there consumers giving them feedback asking for prequel merchandise?

Is there really no prequel content in the Star Wars Advent Calendar this year? Interesting. Just stuff from "...back when Star Wars was cool." (The quoted part is what I overheard from a couple of teenagers at a nerd convention, presumably referring to the original Star Wars trilogy.)

From the pictures, it doesn't look like there enough to the Death Star Final duel to justify that big of a price tag, but with over 700 parts, I guess it's about right. Looking forward to the Tydirium Shuttle and Flash Speeder though.

...

They actually replaced the Vader helmet. They got rid of, IMO, one of the best-done helmet molds in the entire line, and replaced it with...that.

Holy crap does it look awful.

Hello, first let me start off by saying thank you for your efforts on getting the photo's, as alway's angles are important & well as the detail, and Ace you covered it well.
Now Star wars sets of late as a rule, aren't being as well represented as some would like, as this lot has shown.
Once again we have sets that are slightly improved upon the last time we saw them (Lego got any new ideas?)
The only thing, that I can see is the improved Death star duel & imperial shuttle though again these have done before.
I was hoping that something with the tusken raider, or carbon freezing chamber might be in the works but it's back to remakes again. So I'll wait yet another year for something, anything from the original movies.

I will say this though I like the T16 set, it finally gave me the Tusken Raider I wanted.

I like the Final Duel set but it feels too expensive. Same with the Flash Speeder. And yet, the price per part ratios are not bad, they just feel small for some reason.
I wish the minifigures from the shuttle came in a set that I was actually interested in, because they look excellent.
I think I'm generally less annoyed by remakes than many others, but the Naboo Fighter is getting ridiculous. The last one only came out 4 years ago, and this is already the fifth one at minifigure-scale, with no major improvements jumping out at me.
Advent Calendar looks fine to me, I wish 3-P0 had red pants, the gold looks out of place with the red jacket. Nice to see that the Jawas are not totally exclusive to the Sandcrawler.
The Luke constraction looks rubbish (because of the organic face mainly), but I really like the Vader. I wish they had been $15 like the Super Heroes ones, that would make them far more likely buys for me.

I read somewhere a while ago a rumored list for the first wave, which included Grievous, Commander Cody, Jango Fett and Obi-Wan, as well as these two announced. I'm hoping it looks something like the Grievous from https://ideas.lego.com/projects/15448. If it goes to wave two, I want Boba, 3-P0 and a Stormtrooper.
Thought you'd like this about the Vatican cameos.

I think the mini figures, in general keep getting better. I'm on the fence with the Vader helmet. I don't hate this new one, but there was nothing wrong with the old one! And the destroyer droids keep getting worse...

Seeing as I tend not to buy sets much anymore, the rehashes don't bother me. But I do feel like the line is getting stale, and relies too much on new minifigs to keep the afols interested. The throne room is a nice move towards a 'fresh' idea (although technically a remake). I agree that the Naboo sets are somewhat unnecessary, especially the star fighter, which at first glance looks identical to the previous iteration.

The constraction (oh! I just got it! Very clever...) figures are a surprise. I guess I'm really not the target demographic. Vader looks a lot better than Luke, and although Luke looks kinda weird, I think it's a good move to market two opposing characters as primary release. I agree that the less organic characters or helmeted characters would look a lot better.

I never appreciated the advent calendars (especially the holiday characters), but again, I guess I'm not the target demographic.

I do the like final duel scene. Though the central shaft looks more like a rubbish receptacle. So I guess Vader will be trash canning the emperor at the end.

Another Naboo Fighter? How many times are the designers going to go to that well? I have 7141 and 7660 and I see no need to buy another version. In fact, the versions since 2007 have all been derivative and pricier versions of 7660. Too many rehashes for the other sets.

Loved all of these sets, that is, until I saw the price tags. I mean good God!! I don't even have enough money to buy all of those! Like the Vader helmet concept but, it's too big. And of course the one set that comes with Sabine's helmet is over $100. It seems to me that these sets just keep getting bigger and the prices keep getting bigger along with it.

Yeah, I've been saying for a while that a big problem with LSW currently isn't so much that the sets are getting more and more expensive, but that the designs for sets are getting weirdly disproportionate to what the model would actually warrant.

I mean, it's nice that we're getting a big ol' Shuttle Tyderium, and the set looks pretty neat, but what sort of kid is gonna want to plop down a hundred bucks for 'that thing the emperor flew in the one movie' in place of stuff like the Falcon, X-Wing, TIE fighter, etc. Back when the line began the Shuttle was pitched as a 35 dollar set, and that's fair for the type of ship it is. Nowadays I could see it hitting more towards the 50 or 60 dollar mark, but there's absolutely no reason it needed to be designed as a hundred dollar set.

My thoughts:
- the UCS TIE looks pretty much how I expected it to. It looks good (other than the stand, which somehow looks too Technic-y. I know they all kinda tend to but it just seemed to stand out more on this one). Price wise I was hoping it was going to come in closer to the price of the UCS TIE Advanced but I guess the higher piece count partially accounts for that. I wish they'd stop putting minifigs in UCS sets (just for the hell of it??) but I guess I'm in the minority there. Anyway a definite buy.

- not a PT fan but think the new flash speeder set looks good. Despite being a rehash, it's been a long time since the original.

- another naboo fighter... Yawn.

- I was excited about the final duel until I saw it. I have three main issues with it. 1) the imperial guards are the "new" style a la battlepack. Boo! 2) the colouring is all wrong. Too much light grey everywhere (and white??), not enough black. 3) The main door/entrance looks all wrong to me. It looks nothing like the elevator shaft/door setting from ROTJ and instead looks like it fell out of the PT palpatine arrest set from a couple years ago.

- The shuttle tyderium set looks great. The shuttle looks like a hybrid between the old system version and the UCS. Figures look cool.

- I could give a rat about Rebels but that assault cruiser looks pretty darn sweet (and that's saying without any knowledge or context from the show).

- constraction sets? One word...... WHY????
