An elegant snubfighter, from a more civilized age.

Postby soter » Sat Jan 16, 2016 4:40 pm

I know its last minute, but this was too good to pass up. Lots of great ideas. It seems I'm the only one inspired by the Delta-7.

This ship began life as the 7669 “Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter." It was rebuilt and modified a number of times before its (likely) final reincarnation as this. Other than the droid, the canopy, and a few of the yellow pieces, nothing of the original remains. The hull’s slope is thanks to Technic pieces (originally from the TIE/D Defender). The pilot began life as a Spyrius pilot, swapping the head (might have been Luke once) and new helmet.

Suerniac Flight Works J-21a Nixie light strike-interceptor (based on KSE Delta-7 Aethersprite series)

Description:
Spoiler: show
The J-21a Nixie series began with the purchase of a half dozen Delta-7 and Delta-7b fighters following the Clone Wars to supplement their defense force (at the time consisting of a single Charger 70c cruiser, two light stock transports, and a dozen LAAT/i with the missile drivers removed). These fighters, locally known as “Delta Ships,” were extensively modified, with missile racks or external cannons mounted to increase utility. During the early days of the New Order, these were the primary patrol force for Suevia, both in atmosphere and orbit. At any given moment, no less than four were to be flight worthy. The heavy workload of nearly two decades of use resulted in the fighters wearing out quickly. Sadly, the fighters were scrapped and no holographic images remain.

A year before the Battle of Endor, Suevia began the search for a new fighter. A competition was held, since some leaders were considering purchasing another half-squadron of fighters and a squadron of cloud cars. Suerniac FW argued that a single fighter type could perform the missions of both with less cost. The techs started with a stripped down frame (specifically Delta Ship-5, which had suffered a hard landing) to build a fighter to meet all the needs of Suevia. This became the prototype for the new J-21a series. In keeping the the “spirit” nature of the Delta-7's name, the craft was christened “Nixie,” a type of aquatic being from Suevian legend.

Most of the changes made were in components more than in design. Local built and “overclocked” Incom 4L4 engines were installed, allowing speeds greater than the X-Wing, and nearly on par with the TIE/IN "Interceptor". The engines are coupled with two independent starters, a necessity in the boreal climate of habitable Suevia. Though considered unnecessary for system patrols originally, a hyperdrive is included. Improved weapons, shields and sensors were installed as well. To accomplish greater atmospheric agility, especially at low altitudes, Suerniac FW a pair of retractable canards along the forward third of the hull. These allow the Nixie to maneuver within the confines of canyon-fjords common along Suevia coastlines, where over 80% of the population lives. Test pilots also found that the canards, which are designed to automatically adjust position according to speed and attitude, increased maneuverability exponentially above the already agile Delta-7. The competition officially ended with a fly-off between the J-21a Nixie prototype and a T-65B X-Wing. While the X-Wing had greater payload, the agility and utility of the Nixie proved superior and was ordered into production. Some Alliance pilots visiting the planet took time to fly the fighter, and word spread, resulting in eight planets placing orders for their own patrol fleets.

The J-21a Nixie light strike-intercept fighters are meant to be “jack of all trades.” Not only do they provide the “standard” snubfighter missions of interception and dogfighter, but they are optimised for light strike, long loiter patrols, and reconnaissance.

Regarding this final mission, they are equipped with an improved sensor suite, including mapping radar, electro-optical scanner, infrared tracking, high gain holo, and a multi-band comms detector. Many of these new sensors are fitted within or alongside the extended “hump” ahead of the droid. To aid in identifying targets during interceptions, a high-power spotlight is located ahead of the cockpit on the port side.

While the Delta-7 Aethersprite used two dual lasers, the J-21a Nixie uses two single-barrel laser cannon, mounted on the underside of the fighter. Outboard of these are two missile launchers, with three light concussion missiles each. It was this upgrade that the leaders of Suevia were most concerned about. The Delta-7 had little room internally for missiles (or anything else, such as cargo), but the missions the J-21a would perform required dedicated ordinance. The concussion missile launchers are a compromise, in that, while they provide substantial destructive power, their limited magazine dictates that, not only are there few available, but they are somewhat smaller than other models, resulting in a limited firing range. To make up for this lack of “hard hitting” firepower, Suerniac FW installed external mounting points along the hull tips for two proton torpedoes. While unconventional, this method allows the Nixie a level of destructive power to make most pirate captains pause. However, due to the external location, accuracy, speed, and range are a third less than a torpedo launched by an X-Wing. There have been experiments to fit a weapons rack or ejectable fuel tank between the engines, but as of this time none have proven successful yet.

Hi everyone, first post here. Joined the forum because of the contest, but I've been reading the page for quite a long time actually so it was just a matter of time.

Anyway, here's my entry. It's based around the ARC-170.

Need Goods Moved quickly and discreetly? Without unnecessary Customs or taxes? Jax Baxter is Here! In her modified T-47 airspeeder, "the Sparrow" she can move goods cross planet, under the radar, No questions asked. Fees Reasonable. 50% Payment up front required.

Jax is a half human, with super quick reflexes and extra keen eyesight. Her piloting skills are the stuff of legends and underworld tales, though no one seems to know where she came from. When she was younger, she made a name for herself in illegal rally racing. No one knows how to contact her but she always knows when someone is looking for a transporter. She is capable of pushing the sparrow to its absolute limit, which is quite far considering the extensive tuning and modifying she has done.

The T-47 sparrow was salvaged from a junkyard, battle damaged and in poor shape. Jax first removed all weapons systems and added larger engines for speed and finely tuned the flaps system for maneuverability. She added a removable cargo box with short range flight for small space delivery options. Both fast and agile, the sparrow is the ideal ship for smuggling small cargo cross planet and for escaping the occasional patrol or pirate.

The last known Firespray-31 Class Interceptor was a patrol ship that was infamously stolen by the bounty hunter Jango Fett and later belonged to his son Boba Fett. Decades after the Battle of Endor the infamous Firespray was reimagined by Kuat Systems Engineering and a prototype was created. In what seems now like a family tradition the Firespray 32 class prototype was stolen by Boba Fett's daughter-Alyl Fett.

The Firespray 32 was a reimagining of the original Firespray but sleeker, faster, and loaded to the hilt with fire power.
The stabilize fins move independently of each other allowing for far superior maneuverability. The side cowling was integrated into the ships skirt and the bottom of the skirt was flattened and widened to allow for larger cargo to be on-loaded. Additionally, the side cowling flares outwardly giving this ship a sleek and intimidating profile. It is retrofitted with a quad ion engines which are unique in appearance.

Alyl painted this craft in similar colors to her father and grandfather's original Slave 1. It is rumored that Alyl spends much of her time searching the galaxy for the original Slave-1. It's whereabouts and it's pilots whereabouts still remain unknown.

This is my entry for the contest, the T-75 Airspeeder.

Seen here in a Poe Dameron color scheme, the T-75 Airspeeder was redisigned after the fall of the Empire. Resistance engineers decided to stay true to the original concept, and increased engine capacity, blast-resistant glass and heavier firepower.

Too bad that orange and black do not provide camouflage in grass or snow. :D

Firstly thanks for the contest idea, I loved to see the creativity and amazing builders. I am better with ideas than building but I'm pretty happy with the end result.

ENTRY - STARBIRD BY

Bruno Urso was having a bad day. He was tired of listening to the endless B-wing vs Y-wing arguments ("The B is too high maintenance and can't dogfight"; "The Y-wing is too slow and has limited firepower") after the battle of D'Qar (Starkiller base).

He looked at the y-wing and imagined flipping the older republic curved Y-wings wings forward. He looked at the B-wing and imagined it with larger wings and a middle cockpit space. With these thoughts he gazed at the Resistance Starbird for inspiration...and he suddenly saw it staring him in the face. The Starbird-BY was born.

Modeled after the resistance and rebellion logo, the Starbird BY is a hybrid of the Y wing with bombing bays and 4 powerful engines. It's new wings make it much faster than the older y-wings. The Starbird is not just a bomber and dogfighter, it can switch to B- wing mode, with it's body and cockpit able to rotate. In B-mode it can use it's 2 side engines to get into position and can reveal it's missiles and ion cannon.

With multiple weapons, including re-purposed imperial concussion missiles at the front, bombing bays underneath, ion cannon and new proton torpedoes as well as 8 cannons it was clear that Chewbacca had volunteered for arming duties.

A-Wings evolved in style with the hard-to-come-by sand green. I doubt darth vader would have liked it, he's not much for anything involving sand.

Hi, here's my entry. It's called "The last Y-wing", but I'm not sure it will be the the last Y-wing here.
The Rebellion and later on, the Resistance have kept one Y-wing still in order against the First Order. Although sleeker and slightly faster, just like the X-Wing, the updates haven't changed the original model's overall look.

RZ-1S Fighter/Interceptor.

With the fall of the Empire, the New Republic needed more versatility to it's space fleet. The A-Wing need to be more than just an interceptor.

Bigger more powerful engines, four laser cannons and an upgrade from concussion missiles to proton torpedoes.

This was my concept of what a Y-Wing would look like if the First Order created their own version. The idea was that the First Order didn't really have any powerful vehicles and they need to have their own bombing vehicles and they already new how powerful the Y-Wings were. The only problem was that Y-Wings were not maneuverable enough. Well worry no more. Introuducing W-Bomber. Image

A-Wing

Following the Battle of Endor and the fact that only one A-Wing returned intact, the Rebel Alliance realized they needed to make a few modifications. An astromech hole was added so that they could assist with battle damage. The fins were realigned to provided better maneuverability . Last, "saftey tusks" were added to hopefully increase the survivability of pilots in case they wanted to crash into the bridges of Star Destroyers again.
