[SW] Death Star 10188 / 10143 MOC - Part Deux!

Postby etcknight » Tue Apr 28, 2009 2:42 pm

Hello all,

"...Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station!" - Emperor

Well, maybe not fully complete, but nearly so. Back in Nov 2008, I first posted my "MOC in progress." This was partly inspired by the "Lego Star Wars 2" poster which shows a Death Star I in the background. Plus, I was dissatisfied with the completely "open" look of 10188. So, after many moons, the sacrifice of many Bothans, I present my "nearly" finished Death Star MOC 10188 + 10143. *Shiny!*

Lots of bits and pieces have been altered since the original, but the overall concept has stayed the same.

As always, I can assure you ALL this building has been a painful process - especially on my fingers. :S

Some of the changes / MOC that were made include:
-Outer panel alterations to accommodate the inner 10188 model
-Inner 10188 structure mods to accommodate outer panels
-Increased size of Death Star Laser - to correspond with 10143 (looks much better than 10188 stubby laser)
-adjusted placement of Death Star Laser - to match with outer panels
-changing the order / placement of the upper level portions (ie. the "conference room" is now above the hanger, instead of above the jail cell)

-This particular panel always bothered me on the 10143 because it wasn't hinged between the upper and lower panel bits. Luckily, I was able to come up with a satisfactory solution which looks pretty good IMO.

-Lower (and upper) panels can be opened to reveal the inner 10188 model

-More opening
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/etc101/DeathStar-Part-Deux/death_star_07.jpg
-All the lower outer panels and some of the upper panels have been hinged to allow easier opening due to the height of the stand

-The stand allows the model to freely swivel / rotate. I've done my best to make it stable, however I think it still needs adjustment, but I'm just not sure what else to do to make it stronger and more stable. (10188 is inherently heavier on one side and has a tendency to tip over if not careful.)

-MOC of Imperial Guards to finally have "robes" - very tres fashionable IMO!

Additonal Mods include:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/etc101/DeathStar-Part-Deux/death_star_10.jpg
-Adding more trans-lime green accents to the Death Star ray
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/etc101/DeathStar-Part-Deux/death_star_11.jpg
-Jail roof and second cell (to keep Leia company!) >:)
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/etc101/DeathStar-Part-Deux/death_star_12.jpg
-I haven't quite decided how I want this area to look, but it is supposed to be the computer area where Luke and Han search for Leia ("TK-421, why aren't you at your post?") - instead of that weird robot repair area that Lego Co put in (Why???)
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/etc101/DeathStar-Part-Deux/death_star_13.jpg
-Dark Bley plating the Emperor's throne room & increasing the chasm size (the easier to fall through, of course!)
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/etc101/DeathStar-Part-Deux/death_star_15.jpg
-The "real" Emperor from Imperial Inspection is seated [not the cartoon-ish imposter from 10188])

Sorry, Onions! I was looking for the forum rules, but couldn't find it initially. Found it now under "Start Here" (thought it would be listed under the MOC board). Will alter my post now. Thanks. :)

wow very nice. this must have been very dificult and time consuming. all your intierer mods are a inprovement, except for switching the emporors imo. is there a size difrence between the two death stars or are they about the same? and i guess you needed extra plates, because the death star 2 is uncomplete.?

Apart from your breaking the posting rules, I can't find much wrong with your excellent model. It's very detailed and it's easy to see all the work that's gone into this baby. The opening plates are remarkable engineering and it's a fine exterior that you've given to the playset. Love the "robes" as well! Fantastic work.

Thanks for the compliments. :D

There isn't a huge size difference between the two. Mainly I needed to extend the center level to reach the outer shell, and I altered some of the inner supports on both models in order to accomodate better.

Yes, a bunch of extra plates and parts were needed to make the MOC. I only bought one 10143, and supplemented. Even two 10143's wouldn't have enough parts, so it wasn't worth it to buy two.

Glad it's nearly done, but still a few bits needed completing!!
