[SDCC] LEGO’s Exclusive Minifigure Giveaway Recap

Success

Another year and another San Diego Comic Con under our collective belts. I am more or less fully recovered from my trip and decompressed enough to gather my thoughts on how LEGO handled their minifigure giveaway this year. I’ll only be talking about the minifigure giveaway and not the exclusive sets that were for sale. That will be in another post which you probably won’t want to miss.

So this year, LEGO did something they’ve never done before and actually put out information early on how the queueing process would be handled. There would be a line upstairs away from the exhibit hall floor. Attendee badges would be scanned and fans would walk up to an iPad where there was a custom built app and a single “Play” button. Press the button and you had a 50/50 chance on winning that day’s exclusive minifigure. If you lost, you would walk down what I affectionately call Loser’s Lane and if you won, you would walk over and pick up your figure right then and there. And how did it go? Fantastically! It went so smoothly and efficiently that I almost forgot how bad it was the previous years. I really have to tip my hat to the events team that planned it this year as they addressed every major problem from years past and created a non-riotous, almost enjoyable experience.

[SDCC] Images of The LEGO Exclusive Unikitty

LEGO SDCC Exclusive Unikitty 1

The picture above is actually the back of front of the package. The Unikitty set still uses the same clamshell packaging with the bubble, but because of the way the card was designed, they flipped it around and put the bubble in the back.

The print on the inside of the cardboard is different as well. It’s not an image of Unikitty like the three minifigures before her, but it is the instructions on how to put her together. It would have been nice to have a print of some part of Cloud Cuckoo Land instead though and maybe put the assembly instructions on the back next to the legal text.

Unikitty does indeed come with two faces. Clearly this guy had no idea what he was talking about. The Cutesy Kitty face is probably my most favorite between all versions of her.

Speaking of Unikitty, did anyone make it to the LEGO Movie panel? I decided to abandon ship early to beat traffic and see my babies sooner rather than later.

[SDCC] 70817 Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack Unveiled

70817 Batmand and Super Angry Kitty Attack 2

Announced earlier this week, LEGO unveiled 70817 Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack. This set is interesting for me for several reasons: 1) This must mean there is at least one more wave of The LEGO Movie-based sets to go along with the puny 78017 set. It would be extremely unusual for LEGO just to do a one off set like this in an already established theme. 2) Batman, despite still looking stupid because of his mask, has a new facial expression with clenched teeth. 3) LEGO is understanding that Unikitty is one of if not the most popular characters in the movie from how they are interspersing her in a variety of sets at a variety of price points.

[SDCC] LEGO Systems Unveils New Products, Experiences and Exclusives at San Diego Comic-Con

The-Collector

LEGO put out the following press release detailing just about everything that’s going on with their booth, exclusives, and announcements for this year’s San Diego Comic Con. A couple of things that stand out:

  • You will be able to build and take home whatever model creations you make. They’ve always had a free build area but I think this is the first year they are allowing people to take their models home with them.
  • There will be a gallery of every LEGO Star Wars minifigure ever made. Now THIS I’ve got to see.
  • There will be a life-sized model of the Batcycle from the classic TV series complete with sidecar made entirely out of LEGO.
  • A LEGO Hobbit set based on the third and final movie will be unveiled. Also, Bard the Bowman will be given away on Thursday.
  • Unikitty will be given away on Sunday.
  • If you can’t attend this year’s Comic Con and still want a chance to win some of the minifigures, follow @LEGO_Group for a chance to win via Twitter.

Some things we still don’t know are what the classic TV series Batmobile exclusive set looks like, the identity of the DC Comics minifigure, and which day you can win the Marvel and DC minifigures. We do know that those two figures will be Friday and Saturday though. Full press release below:

[SDCC] More LEGO Comic Con Exclusives Revealed: Ghost Ship, Unikitty? And an Upcoming Movie Set Revealed

Eagle-eyed contributor Tohst spotted this Yahoo! Movies article revealing a few more goodies in store for us attending San Diego Comic Con.

First up is a Unikitty whose face changes from “Cuteskitty” to “Cheerkitty” with a flick of a wrist. I’m guessing this Unikitty is bigger than the brick built one you get in a set, maybe about the same size as the awesome keychain light. That being said, I don’t believe that it is one of the four exclusive minifigs that LEGO plans to give away and it is probably just an item for sale at the booth.

Next is a reveal for an upcoming set based The LEGO Movie coming out January 2015. It looks to be a small set featuring Batman, Angry Kitty, a Micromanager, and a skeleton. Hopefully this picture isn’t cropped and hiding a gigantic model in the background somewhere because this would be a cheap way to get Angry Kitty even though she is a different design than the one that comes in Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech.

The second reveal is the Star Wars themed retail exclusive mentioned in my previous article, The Ghost ship. Retailing for $39.99 it features the R2 unit, Chopper. And being built in the same Chibi style as Rocket’s Warbird, my hope of a full-sized TV series Batmobile is quickly diminishing. The Ghost, Batmobile, and Warbird all retail for $39.99 and are limited to 250 each per day of the con not including preview night.
