LEGO to Produce Man of Steel Sets

According to this article on Variety.com, LEGO is set to produce sets based on Zack Snyder’s upcoming reboot of Superman, titled Man of Steel with Henry Cavill donning the suit. The movie is slated for release next summer. If history is any indication, we may see some sets based on the earlier Christopher Reeve era films to be released as a collection before any sets that are tied to the Snyder film. There will also most likely a global on-shelf date for all Man of Steel related merchandise. We’ll keep you posted as more info becomes available.

Thanks to Ben for writing it in.

LEGO Toy Fair 2012: The LEGO Booth

LEGO Toy Fair 2012 - LEGO Booth - 07

It’s always a treat to see how LEGO decorates the corners of their booth at Toy Fair. This year they are understandably making a push on their hot new IP line, LEGO Super Heroes, and their feminist-angering girl-friendly line, LEGO Friends.

The Super Heroes corners was the most interesting. Rather than going with a mural or a large statue, a bas relief of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman adorned one corner. It was a combination of a studs-out mural type of build with a traditional sculpture construction technique.

And finally, LEGO had an approximately six-and-a-half-feet-by-six-and-a-half-feet tall sculpture of the Hulk minifig on the conventional hall floor. Lean, mean, and green, it will probably give you an idea of what the final painted face will look like for Hulk if you squint your eyes and blur your vision a bit.

Man Of Steel Mosaic

Christopher Reeve Superman Mosaic

Who is YOUR Superman? Was Brandon Routh’s turn in Superman Returns your first movie experience or maybe you prefered Dean Cain, George Reeves or even Tom Welling based on the first television series you enjoyed. I’m sure there are more than a few that think of the voice of Tim Daly when the think of the big blue boy scout, but I like many others will judge all Supermen on the performance of Christopher Reeve. The Creative Brick Company has also created a series of mosaics including everyone’s favourite little green man, Yoda. Regardless, this is my personal favourite as Reeve will always be the Man of Steel to me. My hope is that they will make the plans for these available for download in the future, at which time this will be built, framed and hung in my house faster than you can say “Up, Up and Away!”.

It’s A Bird… It’s A Plane… It’s Superman On TV!

Superman TV

I came home from work today and found this gem waiting in my Flickr contacts and even though it’s already making the rounds online, I wasn’t willing to chance it going unseen by our growing group of LEGO supefans. 2 Much Caffeine has really created something special with this treadmill-run side scrolling super TV and you should check out the video to see it in action.

I find it funny that this little wonder recycles backgrounds less than the cartoons it’s most likely inspired by.

Super Heroes Unite! September Winners

Completely slipped my mind last month to check out September’s winners of LEGO’s Super Heroes Unite! contest until I caught wind that Mark (andertoons) Anderson took a second place prize pack of the complete 2012 LEGO Super Heroes: DC Universe collection for his stunning Cat Woman Line Art.

LEGO Catwoman Line Art - Full

The first prize winners of all that DC Universe LEGO swag as well as a limited-edition hand-painted cold-cast porcelain maquette were Kyle Fleming’s LEGO Batmam: Return Of The Joker & Shelby Pritchard’s An Interview With Batman. Kyle’s video was created for a class, so I guess one way or another he got an A.

One of 4 third prize winners Ian Norris scored a brand spanking new Batcave set, LEGO Batman: The Videogame and a T-Shirt for his LEGO-fied comic cover for “The Man Of Plastic”.

Congrats to all the winners who you can check out here and don’t forget the contest continues until a grand prize is drawn in December so get your entries in! October’s winners should be posted soon.

Waiting For Superman

Superman's LEGO Fortress of Solitude (MOC-045)

The first wave of DC LEGO Superhero sets may not be what everyone hoped for, but the anticipation is still brewing. There are at least two builders other than me that I’ll bet want the Superman VS. Lex Luther set if for no other reason except finally getting an offical LEGO Superman. Andertoons microscale Fortress of Solitude is a simple yet striking little model of the Man of Steel’s home away from home, away from home, away from home… phew.

While the title of this post comes from Fat Tony 1138 who LITERALLY built this setup to display his fig, once the last son of Krypton finally arrives.

New York Comic Con hasn’t gotten much love in recent years. Overshadowed by San Diego, there haven’t been any high-profile reveals LEGO-wise until now.

Superman Minifig Unveiled

Superman Minifig

I just received the official images for the Superman minifig that the DC booth will be giving away at New York Comic Con this weekend. I’m not entirely sure what the distribution method will be but I’m pretty sure it’ll involve a line of some kind, waiting around for an undetermined number of minutes, and will be repeated daily. I know, helpful right? Below are more official images of the Batman and Green Lantern minifigs that will also be given away; they are the same exact figs that were offered at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year.

Staff Writer Rick Theroux will be attending the con on Friday and will be providing his initial impressions of the Batcave set along with a slew of images so stay tuned!

DC Comics at NYCC Gives Away Superman Minifig, Debuts Batcave

Superman - LEGO Super Heroes Minifigs - DC Comics

Going to New York Comic Con next week (October 13-16)? Well if you are stop by the DC Comics booth. In addition to the LEGO Batman and Green Lantern minfigs they’ll be given away, you may be lucky enough to walk away with a Superman minifig as well. I’ve been told that it will be “packaged” the same way as the Batman and Green Lantern minifigs from San Diego Comic Con. Also, somewhere in their booth they will be debuting the upcoming Batcave set in all its finalized glory.

Will you be attending NYCC with a camera in tow? Or willing to pick me up a Supes minifig for trade? Hit me up if you are!

Superheroes Community Window at Costa Mesa

LEGO Brand Retail Costa Mesa Community Window - 1

Paul Lee, LEGO Ambassador for LUGOLA and all around good guy, set the theme for the Costa Mesa LEGO Brand Retail store for the next few weeks: Superheroes of Marvel and DC Comics. The display featured some large scale figs of famous superheroes from both brands, though DC Comics had a slightly larger presence. SandLUG member Matt Armstrong (monsterbrick), Mariann Asanuma (Model Gal) along with LUGOLA members Ezra (B. Ezra), Paul Lee (polywen), and myself helped fill out the display with miniland scale superheroes, miniature models, m-wings, and other items all to promote next year’s Superheroes license.

You can get a close up of Ezra’s contributions in his photostream.
