[SDCC] LEGO Smaug Statue Details

I wandered over to the WB booth today where the LEGO Smaug statue was housed and it was much more impressive than what the press photo made it out to be. It’s pretty tall and features light up eyes and a chest. This statue must have made a nice dent in LEGO’s supply of gold 2×4 bricks and sand green elements. One thing I noticed that was barely noticeable in the press photo is the miniland scale model of Bilbo Baggins in the corner, hiding from Smaug. I forgot to take a picture of the whole thing in its display space so the above press photo will have to do. Click through for more pics!

[SDCC] Another LEGO Comic Con Exclusive Minifig Revealed: The Hobbit’s Bard the Bowman

The LEGO Group continues to spread its San Diego Comic Con exclusive news around as this time it’s The Hollywood Reporter getting the scoop on the next Comic Con reveal. Bard the Bowman from The Hobbit franchise is the second of four exclusive minifigs to be given away. As for the other two, the article has this tidbit:

Among the other minifigs at the Con will be the Collector, a character from the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, a DC fig and one from The Lego Movie.

We’ve already known about The Collector. The DC fig is most likely a way to promote the upcoming LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham game. Either that or it’ll be a TV series Batman figure to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the character. The LEGO Movie figure is a surprise though and it could actually mean the wrist action Unikitty revealed yesterday is the exclusive. We’ll see if any more news is revealed.

Also of note in the article is the following:

This year, to avoid chaos, the company has a system wherein an attendee’s badge is scanned to determine a “winner” in a lottery-style giveaway.

What a relief.

The Warner Bros. booth will also feature the gigantic Smaug statue pictured above. The statue was designed and built by Erik Varszegi, weighs over 411 lbs and features 83,433 pieces.

Smaug The Golden

Smaug-the-Golden

It begins. With the looming release of Hobbit themed LEGO sets, I expect to see many fantastic creations pop up between now and next year’s release and this is a good place to start. Fat Tony 1138 started re-reading the Hobbit and got inspired to build another Smaug and has plans to finish the dragon though I think the presentation of what he’s already finished is great the way it is. The look on Smaug’s face as he lays atop his lonely treasure captures the creature perfectly in a neat little package.
