LEGO Movie to Feature Batman and Superman; Casting Begins

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes

While we still don’t know much about the upcoming Warner Bros. LEGO movie, now titled LEGO: The Piece of Resistance, Variety has offered a juicy update. It seems both Batman and Superman have joined the cast! Or I should say, the LEGO versions of Batman and Superman have joined the cast. Will Arnett (Arrested Development) is confirmed for the voice of the Dark Knight and Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe movies) is in consideration for the Man of Steel. In addition, Chris Pratt (NBC’s Parks and Recreation) has been cast as the lead minifigure named “Emmet.” Variety describes him as

an ordinary, law-abiding, Lego mini-figure who is mistaken for the most extraordinary MasterBuilder. He’s drafted into a fellowship of strangers on a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the universe together.

I’ve never considered gluing LEGO together as inherently evil, but I’m sure I’d freak out if I discovered one of my sets stuck together in such a manner. Whether or not that freak out warranted the assistance of Batman and Superman is another story. The film is scheduled for a February 28, 2014 release.

LEGO Movie Officially Announced

8683 Minifigures Dummy

Everyone’s favorite plastic building block is headed to the big screen! There’s been talk of a feature-length film centered around LEGO toys for a few years and now according to Variety, Warner Bros. is moving forward with the project for 2014. The article says the film will be a mix of live action and animation, presumably with the LEGO component (characters?) being animated. Given Hollywood’s track record with live action/animation hybrids of this nature (see: Alvin and the Chipmunks, Yogi Bear, The Smurfs), it’s hard to be optimistic about the project. However, it is early so harsh judgement may end up being unwarranted. Let’s just hope the creative forces “Respect the Brick” and avoid devolving into a string of jokes involving lower intestinal function.

Directors Picked For LEGO Flick

A LEGO movie has been rumored and in the works for some time now, but recent events may have solidified plans for the film, via heat vision:

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the helmers behind Sony Animation’s hit “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” are in final negotiations to write and direct the Lego movie, which is being produced by Dan Lin and Roy Lee. Jill Wilfert at Lego is exec producing.

The plot is being kept under wraps, but it will be an adventure in the Lego world mixing live action and animation.

In order to get the gig, Lord and Miller prepared a presentation that not only had to pass muster with Warners brass but also with execs from Lego, which is extremely protective with its toys and brand and had a significant hand in the process.

After winning approval from Warners, they flew up to Bricks by the Bay, the Lego convention in Fremont, to make their pitch to Lego execs. Warners and Lego weren’t sure initially if they wanted a live-action or animated movie, and Lord and Miller went with a scenario that incorporated both.

I would be super-surprised if LEGO forgoes sets based on whatever movie is made. See what I did there? I made it relevant.
