Review: 6868 Hulk’s Helicarrier Breakout

1. Set Overview

I hadn’t originally signed up to review of Hulk’s Helicarrier Breakout for two reasons, pricing and the uncertainty of how the Hulk would look in LEGO form. I volunteered for the Loki’s Cosmic Cube Escape set with a certain expectation of what that set would be and then the first pictures surfaced. I jumped ship and swam for the Helicarrier as fast as I could and I’ve never looked back. Other than a decent assortment of dark blue parts and an exclusive Iron Man print variant (circular ARC reactor FTW), I’ve found nothing of redeeming value in that set that couldn’t be found elsewhere. This set on the other hand piqued my interest instantly and became the only ‘must have’ of the super hero line. Don’t get me wrong I wanted all of the Marvel sets for one reason or another, but I had to own this set if it meant saddling up my polar bear, riding all the way down to the US of A and laying seige to the nearest LEGO store. I opted to order it online, then I waited to see if the nine year old in me would get to revel in the realization of Marvel and LEGO coming together or be as crushed as he was when they cancelled The A-Team…

Marvel’s Avengers on DVD/Blu-ray Details

Marvel's Avengers 10-disc set

While I’m still basking in the afterglow from watching the Avengers movie, I was surprised to find out a few days ago that some details for the DVD sets have been “released”. Most of the details have been gleaned from Amazon.com so I’ll just summarize the key points here for you along with their current pre-order price. And if you pre-order now, you’re guaranteed the lowest price should it drop any further between the time you order and the time it ships, which is rumored to be around September 25th.

Review: The Avengers

The Avengers Review

Marvel has been building up to this point since Nick Fury made his first appearance at the end of Iron Man in 2008. There have been ups and downs in the outings of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but for the most part they’ve been strong offerings with any blemishes (I’m looking at you Iron Man 2) being forgivable when you look at the the franchise as a whole. To say I’ve been excited about this movie would be an understatement, but even more than the characters individual films this one has a lot to prove. So does it live up to the hype, the legacy and this long time comic fans expectations? The short answer is…

Avengers Poster LEGO-ized

Avengers PosterLEGO Avengers Poster

Once again LEGO has chosen to hand out it’s exclusive media to a non-LEGO site and MTV.com posted this LEGO-ized Avengers poster this afternoon. It’s funny because when the original poster was released I thought it looked like a bad photoshop job compared to some excellent fan creations, but in LEGO form it looks great and I really hope they put out that Nick Fury fig soon.

LEGO Toy Fair 2012: The LEGO Booth

LEGO Toy Fair 2012 - LEGO Booth - 07

It’s always a treat to see how LEGO decorates the corners of their booth at Toy Fair. This year they are understandably making a push on their hot new IP line, LEGO Super Heroes, and their feminist-angering girl-friendly line, LEGO Friends.

The Super Heroes corners was the most interesting. Rather than going with a mural or a large statue, a bas relief of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman adorned one corner. It was a combination of a studs-out mural type of build with a traditional sculpture construction technique.

And finally, LEGO had an approximately six-and-a-half-feet-by-six-and-a-half-feet tall sculpture of the Hulk minifig on the conventional hall floor. Lean, mean, and green, it will probably give you an idea of what the final painted face will look like for Hulk if you squint your eyes and blur your vision a bit.

The Avengers Trailer Now Online!

You may or may not have noticed by now, but I really love super heroes so you can bet I’ve been anxiously waiting for this trailer to arrive. It’s just a teaser, but it’s great to see all the effort Marvel has put in to this massive undertaking finally pay off.

Thanks to Walter Boy for the heads up.
