With the first of the upcoming Marvel LEGO Variant Covers set to drop this week with X-men #5 and Mighty Avengers #1, we thought it might be a good idea to go over some of the details on how these variant covers work. I’m also putting all of the covers in this post as a sort of all in one gallery to keep track of the issues for those interested. There are five of the forty two missing at this point, but I will add them to this post when they pop up. If you collect comics you probably know all this already, anyone for whom comics is not their usual collectable may find this helpful. One thing is certain in both cases, it’s going to cost you.

Marvel.com has announced Annoying Guy #3 (Bradley Cooper) from the Academy Award Winning-film, Hangover Part III, as the voice of Rocket Raccoon. There are any number of jokes I could throw in here, like how he was basically the annoying “boyfriend” of Batman’s wife in Alias, or how he played what was basically himself when he was Face in The A-Team…
But ultimately, I’m mostly just disappointed that they didn’t tap Billy West for the role, since he was doing it in the Ultimate Spiderman. With Futurama ending, he has more time. Plus, he’s awesome! So… everyone enjoy the fact that the guy from Silver Linings Playbook is going to voice the most butt-kicking rodent in the Marvel Universe.
Of course, that being said… I am totally looking forward to getting a Rocket Raccoon minifig!
Spoilers abound in this news round-up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase 2, so if you’re the type who prefers to stick their head in the sand until a movie comes out then go no further. First up, S.H.I.E.L.D. has a couple of new recruits. Actually, new is a relative term…
Disney announced today that a date has been set for the Avengers sequel: May 1, 2015. The sequel will see the return of Joss Whedon to write and direct the film. A series of Marvel universe movies will be released between now and then including Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, and Ant-Man.
In case you haven’t heard already, the Marvel Studios panel laid out plans for phase 2 of their long-reaching Cinematic Universe. The titles for the previously announced Thor and Captain America sequels were welcome additions after the highly original Iron Man 3. Thor The Dark World and Captain America The Winter Soldier were certainly not the biggest news though as Kevin Feige confirmed the rumours of a Guardians Of The Galaxy movie and even brought the first piece of concept art from the movie to give fans an idea of the design direction for the space focused film.
If LEGO continues to make sets based on the MCU, these films could offer a lot of new material and Guardians alone has the potential for great space sets and very unique minifigs (Rocket Raccoon!). Most interestingly though, may have been Edgar Wright’s inclusion in the panel, cementing the long in development Ant Man movie. Wright screened a test FX reel for the fans and while no formal announcement of release date or casting were made, I’m glad to see this movie is still on track and possibly included in the phase leading to the Avengers sequel. You can read more on Marvel.com and just about every other comic based site which are now frothing at the mouth, like ComicBookMovie.com who managed to get some shots of the newest suit in Tony Stark’s closet. I’ve stuck Iron Man at the end of this post because I’m just not a fan of this look, I’m much more interested in the Iron Patriot suit and some other plot rumours floating around about the other films. *cough* Falcon *cough*
This new suit can be sumed up in the best comment I’ve seen thus far: “Too much mustard.”
