TBB’s “Bricks Helping Japan” Charity Auctions

Help Japan

Following their successful two-year old Creations for Charity, our fellows at The Brothers Brick have turned their attention toward Japan and helping the relief effort after the devastating disasters that began there almost 3 weeks ago. Bricks Helping Japan is their latest effort, and you can read all about it here.

In a nutshell, here’s how it works: AFOLs voluntarily donate a model (of all sizes, shapes, and genres) and all the models are put up for auction. 100% of the winnings go to the Red Cross, who are heavily involved in humanitarian relief in Japan. Buyers get original Lego creations from our awesome building community, and the money goes to a worthy cause. You can donate a MOC, bid on the auctions, or donate money straight to the Red Cross here.

More models are being added to the auction page every day, so keep checking back for updates! MOCs donated include cupcakes, CubeDude Porkins, steampunk, Keith Goldman originals, and even giant spaceships. I’ve also donated the Power Miners podracer from the 2009 Podracer Challenge, and which we continue to feature in our current banner for this year’s contest.

Please consider donating a MOC or bidding on these fine items. Also, please read the auction descriptions fully: some of the items were erroneously entered as US only, but most if not all of the items are available to be shipped internationally!

FBTB Charity Drive Final Tally, Raffle Winners

I’m extremely happy to report the final donation numbers to the FBTB Charity Drive. In total, we’ve received 1,195 donations. Like last year, FBTB will cover the fees that Paypal ding’s each donation, so I’ll be making a final contribution of $2,390 to Child’s Play.

Now, before I announce the raffle winners, I just want thank everyone again who donated $2, $10, $100, or whatever amount you donated. Every dollar counts and will go a long way to help children in need. Being a new(ish) father myself, my perspective on life has changed a lot. I can’t imagine what parents must be going through when their child is sick and hospitalized. Gift shopping is probably the last thing on their minds, and this is where Child’s Play steps up to the plate, by providing gifts to those sick kids. The holidays is all about giving, and your collective generosity means a lot. Thank you.

So, with all that being said, let’s reveal the winners!

FBTB Charity Drive Update

FBTB Charity Drive 2010

People have been asking for an update so I thought I’d post something. Sometime in the afternoon today, we’ve managed to break the 800 pledge barrier.

I honestly had my doubts as to how close we’d come to the goal of 1100 donations. But after reaching today’s milestone, I am still hopeful we’ll hit the goal. Don’t forget, there are three chances to win an epic prize package with each $2.00 donation. For more details, you can read the original post which has been updated with details of the third place prize or start donating by hitting the button below.

Thank you thank you thank you.

FBTB Charity Drive: Halfway Point Reached

Just a quick update on the FBTB Charity Drive: We’ve surpassed the halfway point which is just awesome. But we’re still shy of our goal of 1100 something donations. To those of you who have donated once or multiple times, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. To those of you who have not decided yet to pledge: I will entice you with a third place prize. That’s right, I’ve decided to give everyone who donates a third shot at winning something cool. How about a copy of 8097 Slave I?

Charity Update!

My sincerest apologies, fans, for this better-late-than-never update on the charity. I sincerely believed that I would be able to tie this up the day I was discharged from the hospital, which, coincidentally enough, was December 21. But time ran away from me and there were certain things that HAD to get done around the house. Having a preemie certainly accelerates one’s timetable to near lightspeed levels.

So, excuses aside, I’m here to give the update everyone’s been waiting for, the results of the first annual FBTB Charity Drive! I am filled with pride to announce that we’ve received a total of 587 donations, as evidenced by the cropped gif below:

The number of donations received for FBTB's Charity Drive

Using the random number generator at, the winning entry is #368:

The winning entry decided by

Matching up the number to the email received in chronological order, and your first place winner is:

  • Joan Theroux of Norwalk, CT

I’m not going to bother doing the whole image thing for second place, you’ll just have to take my word that I repeated the process. So, without further ado, second place prize goes to #106:

  • Jason Daubert of San Diego, CA

Congratulations to both of you! Your prizes are being mailed out today via Express Mail.

And last but not least, the payment to Child’s Play has been made:

Thank you!

to everyone who donated $2, $10, or more. I have been smote down by your generosity.

As of yesterday, December 19 9:34pm PST, the FBTB charity has hit its lofty goal of 500 donations! And to celebrate hitting such a major milestone, I am changing a few of the terms of the charity:

1) 50% of the first 100 donations was originally intended to be used to cover the cost of the set and prize delivery. FBTB will eat the cost of both, so now 100% of every single donation will be go towards Child’s Play. Of course, “100%” was still a misnomer, since Paypal deducts fees for everything. This brings me to my next point:

2) Paypal’s fees for donations are actually quite hefty: something like 2 or 3% + 30 cents, and a tad more if you’re paying from outside the U.S. …. or was it inside? In any case, the net amount from each donation averaged $1.63USD. So after 500 donations, FBTB would have $820 to donate give or take a few dollars. Now, FBTB will absorb the cost of the Paypal fees, and make sure Child’s Play will get every penny that you readers have sent my way.

In case you’re wondering, I have no idea if Paypal dings Child’s Play the same fees. But in the end, they will still be getting money that I am proud to say came from fans of LEGO Star Wars.

There is still nearly a full day to donate if you haven’t done so. And for everyone who took the time to donate multiple times, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your generosity renders me speechless.
