[SDCC] Pop! Art of the Geek Exhibit to Feature Works by LEGO Artists Brandon Griffith and Nathan Sawaya

The names of Brandon Griffith and Nathan Sawaya should not be unfamiliar to our readers. They’ve been featured before for their work and next week during the San Diego Comic Con, they will be participating in an art show called Pop! Art of the Geek. The show is curated by Nathan Sawaya and “highlights the artwork of a dozen established and emerging artists who have re-imagined the icons of pop culture in ways never before seen”.

Brandon will be featuring the above pictured piece, titled “It’s All A Joke,” a construct of the comedian’s badge from the popular Watchmen comic.

Nathan Sawaya will be displaying his iconic Han Solo in Carbonite LEGO sculpture.

If you’ve never seen either piece in person, it’s worth your time to stop by the gallery see them for yourself. The pictures really don’t do them justice. The exhibit will be on display at the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Gallery located at 363 Fifth Ave in the heart of the Gaslamp District across the street from Dick’s Last Resort. Gallery hours are from Wednesday July 23rd to Sunday July 27th from 11am to 7pm. If you are going to the show, it is extremely easy to find as it is on the second block you walk up when you head into the Gaslamp for lunch or dinner. All of the art is for sale and benefits the Art Revolution Foundation that works to put art supplies in schools. For more infomation check out the Art of the Geek website.

OneLUG Debuts New Works at An Unexpected Art Show

OneLUG

Earlier tonight I attended the the one-night-only An Unexpected Art Show with my family. The Tower of Orthanc was there in all its imposing glory. But that wasn’t all. The members of OneLUG debuted new art pieces at the show, a series of three builds depicting different symbols from the Lord of the Rings. In order from left to right in the picture above: The White Tree of Gondor by Brandon Griffith, The Horse of Rohan by Remi Gagné, and The White Hand of Saruman by Bruce Lowell.

Mind Games: Interview with Brandon Griffith

QO5C5717

Even if you don’t know who Brandon Griffith is you are probably well aware of his work, especially since we just posted his Return of the Jedi chess set last night. As icgetaway he’s created the extremely well recieved Star Wars Chess Board Trilogy among many other builds and the recently successful STUDS collectible trading cards Kickstarter campaign. As a quarter of OneLug he’s participated in building what is possibly the biggest and best loved of the Lord of the Rings MOC’s to date, so who is the man in the beaver’d hat and where does he get those wonderful toys?

Brandon Griffith’s Return of the Jedi Chess Set

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Lego Chess

You should recognize Brandon Griffith‘s name. And if you don’t you should at least recognize his work. Having completed large scale chess sets based on A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back films, he’s completed the third movie-based chess set from the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi. The set debuted at LEGOLAND California’s Star Wars Days back in 2011, but he just recently had professional photographs taken of this gorgeous set. He’s poured the same attention to detail in the ROTJ set as he did the first two, and it clearly shows. His work is outstanding so please, take a few moments and enjoy the eye candy.

Brandon Griffith’s Jedi Chess Set

What's missing???

Brandon Griffith (icgetaway) made a splash at last year’s Star Wars Days with his Empire Strikes Back-themed chess set. His follow-up act of a Return of the Jedi-themed set will be unveiled to the world this weekend at LEGOLAND CA and will surely be a hit. Shrouded in secrecy, you can view some WIP pics in his photostream. I’ll be taking a plenty of pics of this and all the other mocs at Star Wars Days at LEGOLAND CA on June 18 and 19. Hope to see you there!
