[UK] Toys R Us knocks 50% off a couple of sets this weekend …

With all the Black Friday goodies available in the US, we here in the UK will have to console ourselves with the fact that Toys R Us have knocked 50% off 4 Lego sets this weekend … 2 of which are basic brick boxes, but they’ve also heavily discounted :

7962 Anakin & Sebulba’s Podracers

8639 Cars 2 : Big Bentley Bust Out

Should be in store and online.  Get em while they’re hot!  Click the image above to go to the TRU sale page for all 4 sets.

BOGO 50% TRU Sale

LEGO

There’s some sort of strange online-only BOGO 50% off sale at TRU right now for some LEGO sets. It also includes some Star Wars. And the discount stacks on top of the already existing sale price. For instance, 7879 Hoth Echo Base’s MSRP is $89.99. TRU price is $94.99 but it’s currently on sale for $84.99, five bucks cheaper than MSRP. It qualifies for the BOGO deal. 7962 Anakin’s and Sebulba’s Podracers is the same story, $84.99. Add both to your cart, or two of one, and you can walk away with them for only $127.48. You’ll score free shipping or you can do a store pickup on the item. You can browse all their LEGO; items that qualify will have the BOGO offer in red below the item name. I have no idea when it expires but it’s not a bad sale for some sets.

This is way better than the virtual Brick Friday deal at Shop@Home happening today, unless you’re jonesing for some polybags and/or Shadow ARF Troopers.

Amazon Price Matches Toys’R'Us

Amazon marked down a few LEGO Star Wars sets to price match against Toys’R'Us current Cyberweek deals. However, they don’t offer a free MINI Vulture Droid or a tankless Astronaught glued magnet, but they do offer free shipping and no tax to most states.

In addition to the above deals, Amazon has a pretty good price on 4184 The Black Pearl as well, $84.99 down from MSRP $99.99.

[US] – TRU $10 off $50, $25 off $100 All LEGO

Through Sept. 3, TRU is offering discounts on all LEGO purchases both online and in-store: $10 off a $50 purchase, $25 off a $100 purchase.  Put another way, this is $40 for $50 of LEGO, or $75 for $100 of LEGO.  Even better, they are still offering 25% off 7962 Anakin’s and Sebulba’s Podracers, 7964 Republic Frigate, and 7965 Millennium Falcon sets, and forum user DarthMC reports that these discounts will stack online!  With free shipping over $75, this is a solid deal.

[USA] Falcon, Podracers, and Republic Frigate 25% Off at Toys’R'Us

That’s right, three of the newest sets, 7962 Anakin’s and Sebulba’s Podracers, 7964 Republic Frigate and 7965 Millennium Falcon are 25% off at TRU on 8/26 and 8/27. In store, you may need a coupon which can be found here. 25% off isn’t great, but it does drop the prices from TRU markup levels to below MSRP. The email I received says that all LEGO Star Wars sets are on sale as well.

7965 Millennium Falcon

There are a couple of freebie items (LEGO Favor Fun Value Bundle and LEGO Ninjago Skeleton Chopper) for purchases of $50 and $30 respectively. Free shipping for purchases of over $75.

However, a slight caveat (at least online) is that there is a limit of 1 of each set, so don’t expect to grab 2 identical sets for you and a friend with free shipping. No clue if the stores will enforce that, though. Good luck!

Review: 7962 Anakin’s and Sebulba’s Podracers

When the 2011 second-wave sets were first leaked, the reactions for most sets was the same we’d felt in recent years: “meh, too expensive.” But then everyone glanced at the revision of the Episode I classic podracers, and what was in there, and the buzz was on. Early previews pointed to a sharp looking, well designed set from an area that didn’t get a lot of love in recent years.

Picture of the full Podracers set, in all its glory

Episode I is rightfully hated by pretty much anyone who’s ever had it inflicted on them, but the podracer scene was one of the highlights. Edit: Okay, I relent. I was apparently confusing Anakin in this with the video game, or the rest of the movie. I stand by the fact that it was too long. Changing it above to reflect what everyone has been telling me, so I don’t have to go watch Episode I again!

But LEGO managed to take a bad scene and make an awesome set in its original run; 7171 Mos Espa Podrace was a great set with good build quality and a lot of parts that had never been seen before (and a few that haven’t been seen since). It wasn’t without its flaws, especially in the minifigure area, but it was a welcome site to see updated. Especially around here, with some of the fun FBTB has had with podracers in recent years.

So, the real question here is, can a set live up to the hype, revisisted 12 years later? Especially when it comes in with (a few) less parts and one less podracer?

Summer Star Wars Sets Available, Sort Of

The summer Star Wars assortment is now available for purchase through Shop@Home IF you live in Belgium, Denmark, and a few other select European nations. Not sure why all of Europe isn’t included yet, but it may just be a bit of a programming delay. Hopefully the US won’t be far behind.

Thanks to Peter for the news.
