One of the biggest problems I had with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, was that the violence in the movie was just dished out like any other action movie. This sat in definite contrast to the book itself, where violence was always with reluctance. And while who kills who in the this battle is fairly accurate, it all felt too aggressive from the good guy side. After all, they were sort of intruding there, and forced the issue. This is a whole lot less of a battle, and more of an escape / aggravated breaking and entering.
The Goblin King Battle is the biggest set from The Hobbit series thus far, and features said Goblin King (otherwise known as the Great Goblin, and never called a king), a few more of our dwarf company, and several goblins to push around. Like everything else from this particular theme, this is a playset, and designed as a place for you dwarves to run about while falling from distances that would kill pretty much anyone.
At first glance, this isn’t a set that really impresses when you first see it. The box is big, but sitting next to things like An Unexpected Gathering or the Lord of the Rings sets, Mines of Moria (same size and $20 less) or Battle of Helm’s Deep (much bigger and $20 more), it seems a bit puny. It’s really not, weighing in at 841 pieces, 8 minifigs, and $100. More than that, the three dwarves in the set are only available in this set.
So, does it stack up to the price tag, or should you look elsewhere for your minifigs?
Both Amazon and Walmart have discounted The Hobbit sets they have in stock by about 25%. No Bag-end though. Having new sets go on sale with such a generous discount this early in their release cycle doesn’t bode well, but I chalk it up to the holiday rush along with hype for the movie and movie-related merch. Links below are for Amazon, Walmart’s list here:
This may only apply to some of you, but if you’ve never shopped at Yoyo.com before, you should know that they have a 30% off coupon for first time customers. Included in the deal is the new Hobbit line. The only set they don’t have listed is 79004 Barrel Escape. The coupon has a maximum value of $20 making 79010 Goblin King Battle only $79.99 instead of $69.99 like you would expect. It’s still the best price we’ve seen on that set though. A good bet would be to pick up 79003 An Unexpected Gathering. It drops down to $49.99 after discount and you also get free shipping.
Amazon has almost all of The Hobbit sets now. The only one missing is 79004 Barrel Escape. They are even offering a small discount on 79010 The Goblin King Battle. The going price as I write this is $87.74, a 12% discount off of MSRP of $99.99. Full list of the sets available from Amazon is below except, of course, Barrel Escape.
This’ll be a merry Christmas for sure. LEGO Shop@Home has just put up the entire Hobbit collection for sale on their site. You get free shipping with orders $99 or more. Order by December 18th for delivery in time for Christmas. Full list with prices below:
