Review: 75042 Droid Gunship

75042 - Full Set

The May the 4th sales this year were a strange thing for me. I couldn’t quite swing getting the Sandcrawler, yet I owned almost all of the other Star Wars sets. After some deliberation (read, random clicking through products on Shop@Home), I realized that I really wanted the new Chewbacca figure, and I don’t really like buying them on the aftermarket anymore (inflated prices, scalpers… pick your reason). So, I settled on a pair of prequel sets that I hadn’t picked up yet… the Droid Gunship and the Droid Tri-Fighter… otherwise known as the “expensive set with Chewie” and the “dark blue parts pack” in my initial impressions.

I actually owned the original Droid Gunship, released all the way back in 2008 as part of the first wave of Clone Wars sets. Back then, it was a $30 set with 329 parts that was a big reason why most people had the initial impression that the Clone Wars sets were just… bad. It was just an awful set, with awful parts and only a few battle droids, and one that I had no interest in digging up to do a comparison. I know I usually like to do those, but I really disliked that set.

The new set brings along over 100 new parts (439 in total), loses a couple of battle droids, adds a Super Battle droid for some reason, along with Chewie and a Kashyyyk clone. I don’t even remember this thing being in the movie, so given the choices, I’ll guess it was either part of the battle for Kashyyyk or some desperate attempt to get us to buy an overprice set because it includes Chewie. Okay, that last part might be me projecting, because I totally fell for it, but this set is going to have to go a long way to convince me it’s worth $50…

Gunship Alt Model Contest Announcement

gunshipaltmodelcontestIt’s been a while sine we wrapped up our last contest and quite a bit longer since we had an alt model as a challenge, so we thought now sounds like a good time to address both. The goal here is simple: pick up either a 75042 Droid Gunship or 75046 Coruscant Police Gunship and using only parts from the set you’ve selected build a new ship or vehicle by the end of the month. Hit the jump for some specifics and to find out what prizes are in store.

LEGO Star Wars 2014 Sets Available February 17

Chat room regular ninnymuggins pointed out that LEGO Shop@Home has updated their Star Wars page with a release date for all of their new sets for 2014. Finally, after the sets have been widely available in other parts of the world, North America can join in on the fun. If you’re tenacious enough you may be able to find them at the big box retailers as it’s pretty common knowledge that sets can find their way onto the shelves before the street date. Ace Kim | January 4th, 2014 | LEGO Star Wars, News Reveals Hi-res Images for LEGO Star Wars March 2014 Sets

75030 Millennium Falcon 1 updated their LEGO Star Wars section with all of the March 2014 releases. Normally, new Star Wars products launch in January but this is the first time in the history of the line that it will be launching in March due to The LEGO Movie products being pushed out in time for the film’s February theatrical debut. A total of 19 new products will launch including a brand new sub-theme, “Microfighters” also known as “Recruitment Sets”. The Micorfighters fill the gap that the now-discontinued Planet sets left behind. The majority of the regular line focuses on Episode III sets while most of the Microfighters are based on Original Trilogy ships. We’ve rehosted the images below for your convenience. Pricing remains to be seen. All new LEGO Star Wars products will launch in March.

Eurobricks Reveals LEGO Star Wars 2014 Set Images

Brickadeer over at Eurobricks posted some images of the upcoming January 2014 LEGO Star Wars sets. No price or piece count information is available yet, but there are other things that can be gleaned from the images. LEGO, in a continuous effort to create projectile weapons to shoot at your eyes, are introducing blasters that shoot 1×1 round plates AND spring loaded missiles that look to be a replacement for the much-panned flick fire ones that have plagued Star Wars sets for years.
